I just visited Continental's site (www.continental.com) and they have an interactive video presentation on the new travel reality. I thought it was very well done and informative. I realize it's purpose was PR for Continental, but I give them a lot of credit for the way it is presented.
I mentioned this on another thread, but it bears repeating. Continental specifically states that
their overhead bins are larger than their competitors and they are still allowing significantly larger carryon luggage on their flights. They allow only two pieces, because those are the new FAA rules, which obviously they can't override, but the two pieces can be LARGER than what other airlines allow. They did say "one carryon bag, plus one personal item such as a purse, briefcase, or laptop". The word "backpack" was not mentioned, so make of that what you will. Personally I'm gambling that my backpack, which is the size of a fairly large purse, will get through ok.
Anyway, you might want to check it out - the video is only about 5 minutes long and I enjoyed it.
