When I was a kid, one of our dogs disappeared. We lived out on the edge of town & sometimes those things happened in the countryside, that a pet would disappear...
Anyway, a YEAR later my mom gets a phone call from a woman who lived in a town at least 20 miles away, on the other side of a major river *AND* even in another state. She says that she has our dog. My mom says oh that can't be possible, we haven't lost a dog for pver a year. The lady says well he still has his tags on I called the county courthouse & they said he's your dog.
I was sick with the mumps or measles...one of those diseases we used to get, so I couldn't go with them, but my mom and brother got in our old station wagon and drove to this woman's house.
They drove up, the dog was staying in a car in the yard. He saw my mother & brother and jumped up on top of our car. Then he jumped inside the car.
It WAS OUR dog, "Tawn"! Missing for a YEAR. He'd only been at the house for a little while, a couple of weeks I think.
My mom figured out later that a neighbor who didn't like the dog(the feeling was mutual on Tawn's part!) and had a running feud with him had probably taken the dog across the river, across the state line, *way* into this other state. Tawn made it back as close to home as he could but he never did like swimming too much. He got as far as the river and could go no further.
Tawn never did roam much after that. We had originally gotten him from the local dog pound & just fell in love with him - he jumped at least 6 *FEET* straight up (with joy, I think) when he were looking at the dogs through the fence. He was a great dog and quite a character - fathered a litter of puppies the summer before he died, almost ten years after he came home.
Sometimes I still miss him. This time he's been gone for at least 20 years.
agnes!
