Now, I am not trying to offend here, so I am going to tread as lightly as possible.

I have seen a lot of people recently saying that they have gotten this discount, or that discount, and they are raving mad about it.

Some of the complaints I have seen are :
  • I have received the same discount code twice (or more) and I am Mad!
  • I have received a Discount code that is the same as the publicly available code, and it only has more dates so I am mad!
  • I have received a special discount code, and its not as good as this other discount code so I am Mad!
  • I have received a special discount code, and its only a little bit better than this other discount code I have so I am mad!
  • I got an Email from Disney and it didnt have any new discounts in it.

Soooooo, in the most polite tone that I can muster, I ask, “What are you guys expecting here?”

Truthfully, Disney is in the business of making money. They have teams of promotions people who think these things through very carefully. They do all the math, every which way. No matter what discount code you have, you can be sure that Disney believes that they will make money from your trip somewhere, somehow.
If Disney did not make money, you would not be getting any discounts, and Disney would be out of Business.

May I humbly suggest that if you are getting Free Dining which equates to $40 per person per day, (which is $400 for 2 people over a 5 day trip) and you don’t think that this is a good deal, you may want to stay home this year.

If you get a 40% off discount and decide to stay at a Value resort for 5 days that would be a $200 discount off a $500 room….. however if you stay at a Deluxe resort this could be a $1000 discount off a $4000 room. Disney does this totally on purpose. They want you to spend $3000 instead of $500.
Discount codes are not offered so that you can save money. They are offered so Disney can entice those people who are sitting on the fence to come down even if they may not otherwise have come. They are all designed to keep attendance up, and draw your valuable vacation dollars away from other companies, but make no mistake, the moment Disney stops making money, the discounts will end too.

I understand what you mean about being annoyed with people who feel their discount code isnt enough. In my opinion any discount that you get is better than nothing. For years I have signed up for every Disney thing possible (websites, newsletters, The old Disney card (the purple one ), The Disney visa etc.) and the first time I received any kind of a discount code was about 6 months ago, then a few weeks later I received a different one via e-mail, the first was via post card. Unfortunately, we were unable to use either because finances are not good, my DH works for Chrysler and things were very shaky for a while. I am hoping we can swing it in Jan. or Feb. with or without a discount code, I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Wow I'm not sure why anyone would be mad because they were offered a discount no matter what the discount was LOL. Anything is better than nothing.

You also seem concerned that Disney is trying to make money and not "save you money" out of the goodness of their heart. Last time I checked, Disney was a company and they do have to show a profit or they'll go out of business. Personally I'd rather have them stay in business. I love going to WDW. So, yes discounts are designed to pull in more business when attendance is low. I think it's best that they do whatever they can to entice more people to come. It gives me a good excuse to go again because they're offering a better value with a discount. If they end up offering a better discount later that's even better. Disney has a great cancellation policy so you can just rebook the better discount and cancel the old one. I think that's great. I wish airlines had such a good policy.

I'll be a lot of us on this board can remember times where there weren't any discount of any kind so this shower of discounts with all the different options is pretty nice.

Minder, your post is fantastic! I totally agree!!!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2
May come as a surprise to some, but WDW is indeed a business. :)

Thank you blissventure

itrek: Just to be clear, I was saying the same thing as you are. I know full well its a Business, and that they need to make money. But some people dont seem to understand that, and I was simply pointing that fact out.

Here's a big :thumbsup2 for you! Be happy you get a discount! Better yet, be happy you can afford to go to WDW, no matter how you are doing it!

I've LOL'd at some of the posts that say something along these lines:
Disney, send me a code for 'XYZ' so I can take my 10-14 day trip... otherwise no trip for me this year!!

Okay, the way I see it, the code for 'XYZ' equals enough to cut the cost of your 10-14 day trip to 7 day trip. So why not just pay full price, and go for a shorter time rather than fuss "no trip for me this year"????? :confused3

Hey Marcie

Not to hijack my own thread here, but your husband looks a little like Lou Mongello in that picture :cool1:

I think a discount code helps some justify a 10-14 day trip in their own mind.

:rotfl: My husband looks like SOMEONE to EVERYONE! I wish he was Lou, then I'd be going to WDW more often. I took me a good 14 yrs to convince DH to take me, and now he is *almost* as hooked as I am. ;)

I have to TOTALLY agree with this post, Our family has been to WDW at least 50 times, we were members of the Vacation Club, we will be on our 5th cruise in November, have had all of the Credit Cards, had Annual Passes sever Years and so on and we HAVE NEVER NEVER Received any kind of Discount code, pin or anything for anything yet we continue to travel to WDW because we LOVE it....Maybe it is time for Disney to start looking over their list of who gets these pins, codes whatever it is they send and let others have a shot at using some of them, instead of sending numerous ones to the same people who never seem happy about the ones they are getting!

I have never gotten a pin code for a WDW resort, although I've been able to get a AAA or AP discount a few times. I am happy to save anything off the rack rate. However, I can see some people being mad that everyone got a pin code except them!

To those that complain about getting codes....be happy, I have not rec'd one in 5 yrs. I was lucky to finally get 4/3 deal this year......:cool1:

I got a discount pin code for the first time ever this year. I was unable to use it due to the dates involved. However, it is not keeping me from going this year. I take the trip I can afford - if a code comes along and I get to use it, great. Getting to go to WDW is what is important to my family.

I have the Disney Visa, FL Res and Military ID.

This year I decided we were not going. They emailed me a pin code and I have 5 real valid codes for when I am traveling. I just got one more pin code in the mail yest and decided I could not take it anymore!!!

So I caved and booked our plane reservations...... and ALL of the value resorts and the moderates are FULL!!! What!!

So much for being excited about using a code or pin...

It may be disappointing to have everyone getting codes and you not get one. I feel it is worse to be tempted with all these offers and not be able to get a room at all! :confused3

Anyone canceling value resorts for the end of Sept?

I am GOING! Somehow I will be able to figure how to work it all out. Yo ho! yo ho! I am going!

Hey Marcie, Just wondering which resort you stay at (we, too, have 4 kids and are puzzled as to where to stay...on or off.

Hey Marcie, Just wondering which resort you stay at (we, too, have 4 kids and are puzzled as to where to stay...on or off.

We stayed at the ASMu family suite, and it was perfect for us. Our youngest was in a pack-n-play in our room, and each of the older kids had a bed to themselves in the living room. I'm sure the next few times we will go the baby will still be in a pack in play, and when she is 3-ish she will be able to sleep on one of the twins, or with her sister on the full size bed (by then my oldest might be too big to share a bed with his brother... right now they share a bed in their room 75% of the time).

I also love the family suite because of the 2 bathrooms & the mini kitchen. We kept the fridge stocked with milk & water & capri suns, and had cereal & oatmeal & such for breakfast. We also had taken microwave popcorn, but were in the the room so little that only 1 bag got eaten.

As the get older, we might look into the cabins as well. I think it is all going to depend on how well everyone can fit.

How old are your 4 kiddos?
