How long do you have after purchasing your AP to get it activated. We are going in Sept, do I bother doing it now...or wait and do it just before we go.

Is there a time limit to activate?

No, No don't activate your AP until you get there. It is good one year from the DAY that you use it so it's not yet running. If you are using an AP discount on hotel, I haven't even needed it activated in the 5 times I've used it at check in. So, I wouldn't worry about it till you get there.
