stink!!! like feet!!!

gizmo is a 9 yr old chihuahua-terrier mix, who has always been high-maintenance. over the years, he has eaten a barbie shoe, ruptured a disk (trying to kill his leash, lol), developed an allergy to grass, eaten the screen out of the door, been depressed and had problems 'back there' (small dog owners know exactly what i mean!).

but this is a new one, this ear thing. his ears smell bad enough that we have to throw him out of bed! they smell like feet; bad feet; odorific feet! anyone have an idea what might be going on with our little pal? we're planning on a trip to the vet soon, but i'm curious as to whether anyone has had this experience.

Our dog got a yeast infection in her ear that stunk. Some drops from the vet cleared it up.

Yes I have had this problem...does he have floppy ears? Floppy ear dogs are prone to ear infections. My female pug had smelly ears too. We took her to the vet who prescribed a wash and drops for her. Within 2 weeks, her ears were clean, and non smelly. I continue to use the glycerine wash on all the animals as it cleans out the wax

Don't put off that trip. That infection can cause some serious damage if it eats through the ear drum, not to mention how uncomfortable they are.

Sounds like a yeast infection to me too. We're going through this right now with my golden. I've started using 1/2 vinegar, 1/2 water solution for drops in each ear once a week. Seems to be helping.

Yep, take him to a vet.

Yep, they're all right. Ya gotta go to the vet. It's definitely an infection. I know that smell well.

the vinegar/water thing is what we call "backwoods medicine" and almost never clears up an infection. and if it does, it will take much longer than using an actual medication would. besides, you don't even know if it's yeast or bacteria.

oh i just noticed you're only using that solution once a week. even if you had real medication, using it once a week isn't going to cure anything.

thanks for the replies! gizmo is going to the vet tomorrow to find out what is going on with his elephant-sized ears, stay tuned!

The ears are probably an infection of some sort, either yeast or bacterial. The treatment for each is different, so the vet is a good idea. Our dog(Springer Soaniel)has long ears, so about once a week I clean them with a little alcohol on a cotton ball. He tolerates it, but he expects 42 cookies when I am done!!!!

As far as his feet...well, they walk barefoot all the time, your feet would stink too!!!!!;) They have these pre-moistened washcloths at the pet store, and when I get a whiff of ted's feet, I give them a wipe. Of course, do check between the toes to make sure there's not something stuck in there that could be infected.

Dogs are high maintenance, aren't they????
