This (DISNEY)land Was Made For You and Me - July 2016 Weight Loss and Lifestyle Change Challenge

July 18 - Off to FrontierLand We Go! :D
DSC_2659.jpg

Adjacent to Adventureland, Frontierland is the last "land" on the left side of the park and resembles the Ol' West.
We're looking at the entrance from the hub - sort of resembles a fort! On your immediate right is Westward Ho, the pin
trading location. And on your left are the merchandise stores. While Adventureland has the Dole Whip as
the signature snack item, Frontierland has something else: The Turkey Leg.

Question of the Day - July 18
The Disneyland Turkey leg has garnered quite the following and is one of the signature staple items in the park.
(Along with the Churro and Dole Whip). So let's talk Disney Park Snacks today and what your favorites are.

What treats and snacks are a "must eat" when you're at a Disney Park?
Now that you're making a lifestyle change, how will this affect your consumption of said treats?

Bonus: Opinions on Turkey Legs: Love 'em or hate 'em?
Snacks, snacks, what are my go to snacks? I've mentioned ice cream martinis a couple times, but I actually didn't have one this last trip. But I did have ice cream, so that's one. I had two rum dole whips, not at the same time ;), so I'd put them on the list. The hummus and olive plate at Spice Road is more of a meal, I do like the the frozen strawberry juice bar and get at least one each trip.

I've never had the turkey leg. They are so huge and, well, pre-historic that it kind of makes my stomach turn.

The corn dogs loved em and probably a Mickey Waffle breakfast at Carnation Café. It won't change for me I don't get there often enough to worry :rotfl:

Turkey Legs - I didn't have one - DS15 had been sooo looking forward to having one but when he did he wasn't a fan.

We have decided that we are going to dance to You'll be in My Heart from Tarzan. He has always loved animals especially monkeys so I thought it was appropriate. The song that really explains ds1 is Duck Tales but that is a little hard to dance to. Ds2 and I are still deciding. I wanted to be something from Beauty and the Beast. It was the first movie we ever took him to. It was the first Broadway show he ever went to and it was the last show we worked on in his high school together. There was nothing from the movie that I could think of but I think I saw something from the Broadway show that the father sings to Belle. It might work. If not then we have decided on You've Got a Friend in Me from Toy Story

Oh - how wonderful - you are making me teary just thinking about you and your sons at their weddings dancing.

JJuly 16 - Question of the Day
bonus question - have you seen fantasmic? what did you think? have you seen it on both coasts?

I grew up watching Fantasmic along the Rivers of America at Disneyland - so seeing it at the one time we went to Hollywood Studios was a trip. An auditorium!? Woah - so fancy! :rotfl:

We actually sat in the front row along the rails to get the most authentic view as we've had it in the past with Disneyland... and it was cool. Where as we have Peter Pan, we got to see Pocahontas. I love that the shows are so similar and yet so different. And having a real seat in WDW was a nice change from "squatting on a folded up blanket" :)

July 17 - Question of the Day
Disney creative has been around for about 90 years, with the parks for more than 60 years.
How as Disney positively affected your life? What are you earliest memories of Disney movies, parks, etc
and how have you passed that on to your kids (or plan to if you're not there yet)?

Bonus: Have you seen the Paint the Night parade in person? What did you think? :D

I've seen Paint the Night three times - the first sitting on the ground out front of the fire station, the second a bit further away at the Carnation Cafe and the third from the Matterhorn area. All are good locations but it's crazy how being close to the floats and further away changes the experience. it's a phenomenal show and I hope they'll continue to run it after the 60th is over.

As for how Disney has positively affected my life... it's been my entire life. Growing up with Disneyland, seeing Disney movies, and just wanting to be Princess Belle for a career? It's all in my DNA :)

Must eat treat: Disneyland Churro and Mickey Cake Pop.

Turkey legs: NOOOO. EWWW. NEVER. There is nothing more disgusting than smelling the turkey legs and looking over to see a family of four gnawing on them :(

Amazing job with 100 pounds weight loss!

My end goal…
I am only 42, but I think about the problems that my weight could cause when I age. I want to be strong and fit. My MIL is extremely overweight and has been for at least 30 years. She is so limited by it. I don't want to add a lot of extra weight to the problems that normally come with ageing. It would also be fantastic to be able to buy clothes that I like vs. clothes that don't make me look quite as fat…

I'm really not doing a great job at picking an eating plan and sticking to it. I keep toying with going back to WW. I did WW a few years ago but I felt like the more I weigh and measure all my food, the more I think and obsess about food. I also didn't like the focus on sugar free food because artificial sweeteners make me sick. It sounds like it may have changed a bit, I don't know.

I have not been good about my steps the last few days. Weekends are sometimes hard because my husband is home and my schedule is off. I'm not giving up, I just need to do extra. I'll try to get on the treadmill tonight and get my daily steps to 11,500. A couple days of that and I should be back on track.

July 16 - Fantasmic!
DFD589042.jpg

Imagination... dream a fantastic dream :)

Well folks, we've completed the left side of the park. Congratulations on making it through half the month and half the park!
As we take a stroll towards Frontierland, we're going to pause for a minute at the Rivers of America and watch... FANTASMIC!

Fantasmic! originally premiered at Disneyland in 1992 along the Rivers of America. It is a little different from its Hollywood Studios
counterpart in that it is a wee bit shorter in duration and you literally sit around the Rivers of America instead of in an auditorium.

In Fantasmic, you follow Mickey's dream as he eventually becomes Sorcerer Mickey and - watch video clips with water and music.

July 16 - Question of the Day
Fantasmic is about Mickey's dreams - so take a moment to think about your dreams/ambitions with your life style change.

What is your end goal / dream at the end of this process? Do you have a specific target in mind,
or are you still trying to figure out and it's all about the journey?

bonus question - have you seen fantasmic? what did you think? have you seen it on both coasts?

My end goal is to right now is to get to 120 pounds. This is the weight I was before I had my second child. My dream though is to get to my high school weight which is 100 pounds. I know at this age it might be a pipe dream but my plan is to keep up with what I am doing and add in some weights and maybe some more workouts. If the pounds continue to come off I will be very happy with that. If I stay at 120 I would be happy with that too.

I have seen Fantasmic at WDW. This last trip was the first time we have not watched it. My husband loves it. I did the first time I saw it and maybe the second but then I felt like I have seen too many times.

For those who feel compelled, I would appreciate prayers and PD for my DMIL. She was in a car accident yesterday (someone cut her off on her way to the yarn store:sad1:) and is in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit with a broken sternum (probably from the airbag... she is very short and sits too close to the steering wheel) plus lots of bad contusions from the seatbelt. She is nearly 94 years old and up until this moment she has lived alone, cared for herself fully, and still drove. While I think she will recover from this, I pray that it isn't the beginning of the end of her being able to be independent. Four of her seven children (including my DH) as well as my DD (her school is only 30 minutes from the hospital) were able to be there at the hospital last night.... I'm sure that helped her a lot. DH stayed over down there and will return to the hospital this morning. Praying she had a comfortable night and was able to rest.

I will be praying for your mother in law. This is my fear for myself. I know I have said it before but I am very short. Only 4'9". I sit very close to the steering wheel. I sit back as far as I can and even drive more with my toes then my whole foot. I know if I am even in accident where the air bag goes off it would not be good. I hope she has a speedy recovery.

July 17 - Disneyland Celebrates its 61st Anniversary
tumblr_m1d1je14Iy1r5z5hmo1_250.gif

Woah - she's another year older!

Today marks the 61st birthday of Disneyland - can you believe she's another year older?
Last year marked the launch of the Diamond Celebration which will continue until Labor Day weekend.
Did anyone get to participate in the activities? One such activity was the Paint the Night parade!

Paint the Night is the next phase of the Electrical Parade - featuring LED lights and HD screens and costumed characters.
It's a wonder to behold and participate in with the color changing ear hats and paint brush / wands.
And if you're a fan of Wreck it Ralph, the song "When Can I See You Again" is the soundtrack.

You'll see floats featuring Monster's INC, Little Mermaid, Belle, Toy Story, and other Disney creative from the last 20 years. :D

I love Disney. Always have. Cinderella was my favorite growing up. Still is. We never had the money to go to the parks so we had books and movies and I watched them all the time. My Cinderella book is about to fall apart. When I was a pre-teenish age I would get a Disney movie at Easter and one at Christmas. This was through the years of Aladdin and all of those. Disney makes me feel like everything in the world is right. I can for at least a short lose myself in the magic.

My kids are spoiled. They have gone to Disney 4 times now. My son is like me and can lose himself in the magic. My daughter on the other had does not. We tend to watch a lot of Disney movies.

I have never seen the parade.

I do not have a must have treat/snack at the parks. We tend to try and find slushies but that is just because we are so hot. I would love to have the Mickey ears ice cream but it would just melt to fast. I let my kids have one when they were 4 and 5 and it made such a big mess they haven't had one since.

I am not one to eat a turkey leg in the parks. They are huge and just look gross to me.

First off I will figure out how to do multiple quotes one of these days.

This weekend was very busy. My cousins grad party was on Saturday. I still can't believe she is going to college. I babysat her and her older bother in the summers. while my aunt and uncle worked then if they ever went out together. I ate good at the party. I only had 1 small piece of cake. Then yesterday I got together with some old friends from high school. I haven't seen them in a long time so it was nice to hang out with them and have the kids play together.

Today has been a day. With the RNC starting today marked the first time I get to work from home. I have been worried about not getting enough done in a day and working with my husband as he works from home 3 days a week. The morning started out rough. My husband and I snapped at each other a few times but we figured it out as the day went. We even went on a 45 minute walk on our lunch. Work well that didn't go as planned either. Our database got an upgrade over the weekend and we weren't able to do anything we needed to. Thankfully it only took about an hour or so to get that fixed.

I a worried about a lot this week. I have a lot of friend and family the are cops and most are working the RNC. With everything going on right now I am worried something will happen. I am trying not to think of it though.

Here is my check in for the week

18/31 days of getting 10,000 steps a day
5/9 workouts

I am at 57.50% for the month.

We rarely snack at Disney to be honest. Three meals a day while on vacation seems to be plenty for us, but also mandatory. I would never, say, skip lunch and just have a snack or two to hold us over until dinner. I need the break of sitting down (even in a quick service place) for a real lunch. Maybe if we went more often, we could do that but not with the way we tour the parks! Our only real treat is ice cream during Wishes.

Now, as far as turkey legs go, I guess I'm the odd person our because I think they look tasty. I just think they also look like "lunch" or "dinner" and I won't give up my 30-60 minutes of sitting down just to try a turkey leg!

I don't think my lifestyle change will really affect my treats because, well, we don't eat lots of Disney treats. We will definitely still have our Wishes ice cream. My lifestyle change most certainly affected what I ate in the parks in June though. My normal Plaza restaurant cheeseburger was replaced with a salad and my muffin/mickey waffle breakfast was replaced with two hard boiled eggs and a container of yogurt! So, I can't say I haven't made DIsney changes -- just not to snacks!

Since we are AP holders at WDW we try to bring our own snacks when we go. But when I do get a snack I like to look for things that I have never had before. Some of the favorite things I have tried lately are a buffalo chicken waffle sandwich at AK and chocolate dipped marshmallows at Goofy's candy kitchen. Since changing my ways I still eat some snacks but instead of everyone ordering their own we split them.

I have never had a turkey leg. They smell good but I'm just not a fan of turkey.

I love the tuna salad at BOG and the ice cream cookie sandwich although I am not that keen on ice cream anymore. Flame tree ribs and chicken are yum too

Turkey Legs - the scariest thing at WDW

Fantasmic was good but we don't plan doing again next year.

My ultimate goal is to live healthy and not go on and off diets. To find it easy to sustain my lifestyle, to have energy and to know I live in a away that supports my wellbeing

My last four trips to WDW were all after I hit goal. That being said, I am NOT going to forgo a favorite Disney treat because I get them so rarely! I think the change in my eating at Disney (and on vacations in general) is that I make it about BALANCE... I don't splurge at every meal, I will SHARE a treat or just eat a smaller portion, I try to eat what is truly SPECIAL and avoid the average, or enjoy the treat in lieu of a meal...... all ways to have my treats but not come home with too many extra vacation pounds. DD and I will SHARE a caramel apple instead of having one each. I have a turkey leg as a meal instead of as a snack between meals (yup, I like them.... but I hate the mess!), or I will have a piece of chicken with a side of fruit rather than a burger and fries (LOVE Disney, but there is nothing special about their burgers and fries).

Bonus: As I stated above, I do like the turkey legs! They are horribly messy and salty and greasy.... and almost impossible to eat without getting messy. We will often grab them before staking out a spot for a parade..... so we have dinner AND something to do while we wait!

I have always, always loved Disney movies. I think Beauty and the Beast was the first movie I was taken to as a child and I fell in love. Everything I had had to be BatB. So that began the obsession.

I vaguely remember some things from my DL visit, but I was just 4. It wasn't until I was 10 that I was invited to go with my cousin to WDW. It was awkward, because I was a little too old for the magic, but I desperately wanted the magic-- and my group was more like a "ride all the rides" group and not a "soak up the atmosphere" group.

It wasn't until I graduated college and moved to Florida that I really started to fall in love with the parks. I went once with my family and the next year I was all over DH (then fiance) to take me back for a long weekend. His direct quote was, "I don't wanna go see *bleeping* Mickey!" RUDE! I was crushed. He grew up in FL, went every year to MVMCP, and was soooo jaded. But he eventually caved and we went for Labor Day. I was in a very bad place at that time-- I hated my job SOOOOOO much. But I needed the money to save up for our wedding. I guess he saw how much I needed the break and to be in the magic for a few days, because we left that trip passholders.

The rest had been a whirlwind of Disney magic-- 4 years as passholders, 2 international parks, and planning to hit the China parks in the next couple of years. His attitude has changed immensely and his eyes have definitely been opened to the magic that is there beyond just trying to ride all the rides.

I don't think it's a stretch to say WDW has created an incredibly strong foundation to our marriage. We have SO much FUN together on our weekend trips. It doesn't matter if we are staying at a $39 a night groupon hotel or splurging on site-- eating popcorn at the parks for dinner or doing a signature restaurant-- whatever. We are always having a good time. We've had some of the best conversations about life and plans for our life and possibly kids while sipping margaritas and people watching in the Mexico pavilion.

All our family is within a 30 minute drive of where we live (with the exception of my mother), so while it is a blessing, it can also feel like we are being pulled in 20 directions at once with all the life events and things to do and obligations to fulfill. If it's getting close to being 2 months since our last trip, we can feel it and will say to each other, it's time to go to Disney. It's us time, it's fun time, it's magic time. And it helps us be the best us we can be for each other and for ourselves.

TL;DR version: Yeah-- I drank the kool-aid :-)

Wow -- I've been a rambler these past few days!

Trust me-- that does not sound silly at all! This rings so true for me as well. To the people that "get it," there is a restorative nature to being at a Disney park-- and sometimes it's just what you need to find that little extra magic within yourself to keep on keeping on.

I LOVE your story!!!

I'm going to try to make a point to come here and read while I drink my morning coffee so I don't let days go by.

I should have taken notes but I didn't. I'm sorry to hear about the lady that got in a car accident and I'm glad she's doing better. I was a nursing home social worker and to be living at home and driving at 94 is outstanding! I hope she makes it back to that.

Good morning friends! DMIL took a turn for the worse yesterday so after my day job I requested to be removed from my evening online shift and DS and I made the 2+ hour drive down to the hospital (DH had already left) and arrived just in time to be told that visiting hours were over! We were able to see her, but I'm sure she didn't know we were there. Not sure why she seemed to have gone downhill since she was fine when I saw her Sunday, but we are thinking it was a result of poor pain control and then the effects of pain meds etc. Apparently during the afternoon she was quite confused (congratulated my DD on her recent engagement.... which is quite a chuckle since DD isn't even in a relationship!), horribly nauseous, plus very vocal about her pain and asking the Lord to just take her and requesting to see her whole family. I think it really scared the family members who were there and they all got a bit panicky and started telling everyone to come. That being said, we all firmly believe that your MIND is a very strong thing and when you mentally/emotionally give up, it can have a strong effect on your body. When DFIL was diagnosed with end stage cancer 15 years ago, he was originally give a year to live.... then they downgraded that to 6 months. He gave up the fight and was dead in days.

Anyhow, hoping and praying to hear that she had a good night and that they got some control over her pain and pain meds and that she is improved today. DSIL and Dniece and Dnephew are all flying in from TX over the next few days as well, so by the end of the weekend DMIL will have been visited by all of her children and the majority of her grandchildren.... so that will make her happy!

Thanks for all of your good thoughts and prayers!

Here is MY unofficial QOTD: Do you think that you can truly conquer a weight issue if your diet/eating plan never addresses the mental/emotional reasons for overeating ?? (Just thinking out loud here, btw.)

Gotta dash to work. Had originally planned to be there by 6 am, but since we didn't get home until after midnight, I decided to go in for 7 am. But since I've been sitting here so long, now 7 am won't be happening either! Maybe 7:15??? ..........................P

Sorry to hear about your MIL. I bet it is the meds, pain, strange environment, etc. When I worked at a nursing home my Grandmother came in for rehab. She was so confused that she was up in the night telling people she had to make waffles. She wasn't happy when they wouldn't let her. She adjusted after a few days and her confusion went away. She was able to return home after rehab. She lived at home by herself until she passed away.

Here is MY unofficial QOTD: Do you think that you can truly conquer a weight issue if your diet/eating plan never addresses the mental/emotional reasons for overeating ?? (Just thinking out loud here, btw.)

I don't think you can conquer it long term without addressing the issues. If we don't change for good, the weight will come back. I know that there are times when I am an emotional eater. As my kids have gotten older and my life is a bit less chaotic, I find that I do that less and less. Everyone handles stress and issues differently, so I need to continue my quest for healthy ways to manage stress and uncomfortable feelings.

I'm happy to report that I did get on the treadmill last night and got 11,950 steps yesterday. That gets my weekly average to 9296, so I have more work to do, but it's better. I guess that means I am at 92% on my goal at the moment.

What treats and snacks are a "must eat" when you're at a Disney Park?
It used to be the lemon cupcake from Hungry Bear but they don't have it anymore. I don't know that I have a "must have" now. I like so many food items at Disneyland that I tend to get different ones each trip. Since my kids are with me we always end up with popcorn and churros so I guess maybe those are my must haves.
Now that you're making a lifestyle change, how will this affect your consumption of said treats?
I'm still going to enjoy the treats I want at Disneyland when I'm lucky enough to go. Again, taking things one meal/snack/choice at a time. I know if I have an ice cream cone I better eat a smaller dinner. Things like that.

Bonus: Opinions on Turkey Legs: Love 'em or hate 'em?
They're ok. I'd never buy one for me but I do steak a piece when my DH gets one.

Gotta dash to work. Had originally planned to be there by 6 am, but since we didn't get home until after midnight, I decided to go in for 7 am. But since I've been sitting here so long, now 7 am won't be happening either! Maybe 7:15??? ..........................P

I'm so sorry to hear about our DMIL. I hope her condition improves some today!

The Wildest Ride in the Wilderness!

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is another "Mountain" ride at Disneyland - which means it's a rollercoaster and full of thrills!
It's very similar to its MK, Tokyo, and DLP counterparts, boarding a train and going through some ol' mining areas.

Did you know that each park has a different backstory as to the ride?! They're all pretty cool :)

Disneyland's attraction sits where the defunct "Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland" attraction used to sit - and the little town shown at the end
of the ride is actually there to honor the former attraction. BTMR opened in 1979 and today is one of Disneyland's most popular attractions.
The attractions for both WDW and DL were developed at the same time - with minor tweaking for space in each park.
Disneyland's rock formations are based off Utah's Bruce Canyon National Park.

July 19 - Question of the Day
@pjlla actually posted something earlier today that was similar to the question I had planned, so I will mesh both into one awesome question.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is known as the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness. Going through a lifestyle change can be a wild ride too!
Making positive changes is great, but have you actually determined what the root cause of the issue is that got you to where you started?
How did you find these root causes and what have you done to combat them?
(ie: If you're an emotional eater, did you determine what triggered you and how did you combat that?)

Bonus question: Do you prefer to sit in the front or back of Big Thunder?

I have talked about this before, but I don't believe I had a root cause for me eating the way I did other than really liking the taste of food that isn't healthy. So the way I've combat those things is by not eating them and to find other foods that I enjoy (maybe not as much as french fries or pizza) to take the place of the "bad" foods. For example, I do love a Big Mac, but I also like 6" subway veggie delight on wheat... maybe not as much as a Big Mac, but I still enjoy it. 230 calories is much better than 550 calories!!!

The other part of it is eating less. I used to eat until I was so full, it's like my brain has a 30 min delay to tell me I was stuffed. Now I eat and if I still feel hungry, I wait 30 min. If after 30 min I still feel hungry, I might grab something, but most of the time by then I feel fine and don't need it.

As for Thunder Mountain, I think I like the front better. The back is great because it's a little faster, but I do enjoy the site lines of being up front. I'm a Thunder Mountain fan - fun coaster for the family and pretty tame, but enough to get your heart rate going.

---------------

First football practice is tonight! Part of me is sad because basically my summer is over, but I am excited to get back out there. The next two weeks is our mini-camp. This week is just for returning players. Next week the upcoming Freshman will join us (and we have a 5th - 8th grade camp in the morning).

This means today is also the start of a new phase for me to stay healthy. I eat the worst during the season. I'm hoping all the changes I've made during the last 7 months will stick - I'm 99% sure they will. I just can't see myself stopping for fast food after practice like I used to... I'm just not that person anymore.

It'll be interesting to see how many steps I average during a practice and if my coaching style changes at all with the extra energy I have.
