Third time trying to read Twilight ... I'm about to give up

Well, I kind of feel I owe it to Pop Culture (Or at least to this decade) to read Twilight. At this point, asking me to read the whole series is a stretch. I just .... I just can't get into it. I always manage to read up to the part where Bella and her friends are shopping for the prom and then ... blah. Truth be told, while I'm reading Twilight, I get the urge to reach for Interview with the Vampire (Either the novel or film) or some Stephen King novel. I feel kind of guilty because my sister calls at least once a week and asks, "How are you liking Twilight?"

I love the movies (And I usually love reading novels on which films are based), but I just cannot get into this one. I'm giving it one more try. Thanks for letting me ramble.

I did the same thing, I felt that I needed to find out what this Twilight appeal was. I read the first book and that was it. Really didn't see the appeal.

As far as vampire stories go, I much prefer Anne Rice.

Real vampires do not "sparkle."

I suffered through 3 of them. Yuck. I found them boring and silly. On the other hand, I'm loveing the Sookie Stackhouse books.

If you can't get through the first book, don't even bother! I am a rabid vamp fan, however book 4 just killed off any desire I had for the Twlight series. I still have not finished it. It angers me that she went in the direction she did.:headache:

I can't even stand to watch the movies and that is saying a lot for me since I have probably seen every old, grade Z and awful vamp series out there.

Oh and there is no comparison to LeStat, I don't care how many books or movies I watch.

They aren't all that well written. I did find the subsequent books to be better then the first one. It took me almost 3/4 of the way through the first book to 'get into it". All in all, they are an easy read and a way to kill an afternoon.

I didn't even bother. I got over teenage angst a LONG time ago. :rotfl:

Not to mention, from a literature perspective, the books are poorly written and poorly executed.

OMG, yes!!! It all comes back to LeStat for me, also!!

Last week, while struggling through Twilight, I finally put the book down and reached for my Fright Night DVD ($5.00 at Walmart!).

I think this is partly the problem. I read an article where Stephen King (:worship:) tore Stephenie Meyers' writing skills to shreds, so this has always been in the back of my mind while reading ... Well, trying to read.

I've read them once and I think that was enough. The writing is incredibly painful to get though. Normally, I read books before the movie comes out (cough, Harry Potter, cough) but with the Twilight series, I just find a detailed plot line online and refresh my memory.

I thought about taking Twilight along when we drive to WDW in a few weeks. I can read up to a point in the car before I start to feel sick. I don't know, though. It's not exactly pre-Disney reading.

I saw that interview. He did not tear her to shreds. He was answering a question from a interviewer. He was just giving his opinions on authors, which is a favorite thing for him to do.

King compared the Mormon author to JK Rowling, saying that both authors were "speaking directly to young people". "The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can't write worth a darn. She's not very good," he told an interviewer from USA Weekend.

Twilight is a teen romance book and should be looked at it as just that. The problem is that us supernatural junkies are paticular about our genre.:rolleyes1

I only read them because dd was reading them. It was torture--the writing was horrible and I really hated the character of Bella.

Thanks for the clarification about what King said in the interview. In my mind, it probably helps me to think that he "tore her to shreds". ;)

I got through the first one... same with harry potter. I just couldn't torture myself with the rest of either series. The first books were bad enough.

No, you really don't.

I felt this way about Catcher in the Rye. I tried reading it, but I hated Holden Caulfield so much I just couldn't do it. So I've given it up.

I agree that they are very poorly written. I also don't like that some people say, "well they're for teens." That's not a good excuse. There are plenty of teen books that explore similar romantic themes and are written far better than the Twilight series.

That's always been my criticism of Twilight: A theme that's been done many times, by better writers.

Also the whole Bella/Mary Sue situation is beyond ridiculous in the books.

I really dislike the character of Bella as well. The movies portray her even worse! But, my sister encouraged me to read the books and I did. I did like the story line because it was basic. It was such an easy read and I didn't have big expectations, so I don't think I was let down. I think if you read them thinking that it is going to be a "great" story you will be let down! :confused3

I just finished the third one. I kind of skim at parts, but it has become a little of a guilty pleasure. I will read the final book just because I've come this far although I find the idea of Bella wanting to become a vampire so she doesn't have to be 'old' ridiculous. Although typical of a teenage girl I suppose.

I do laugh at loud when Bella says something like I laid on his cold chest and of course did not hear a heartbeat. Hee! In the beginning I thought Edward acted like an abusive boyfriend, but that seems to get better later on.
