I have bought the $149 3day park hoppers for our upcoming trip. Now thinking about upgrading to AP's. When is the best time to do this? First day or last? Do I get full $149 credit towards the AP's or is it prorated? I don't think we want to do this first day because we'll be there during a blockout period. And if I do it on the last day will the credit be prorated?

It will not be prorated, you will get the full value applied to your AP. When you get it done depends on if you want to use your MM. Once you use it then upgrade, as long as it is not a blockout day.

Thanks, All three days are blockout so I'll upgrade on the last day. I was afriad of the value being prorated.

They don't prorate which is good for us, but they also don't go back and give you the percent back on food (and merchandise, if going to a Premium) you would have gotten if you could have used it before, so it's kind of fair to everyone in that way. :)

Also, the AP will expire one year from the day you first used our upgraded ticket not the day you upgrade to an AP.

Yea my mom just upgraded her 2fer park hopper ticket to a premium annual pass. Seeing how she bought the ticket back in February they prorated her annual pass.

So, if I use my 3 day park hopper on the 3rd,4th and 5th and upgrade my park hopper on the 5th, my AP will expire on the 3rd of next year. Right?

yes!

ETA: Hi neighbor! And DAPs are only blocked out on the 3rd. So you can upgrade on a block out day and still have park priviledges that day!! I'd upgrade after you use your MM and take advantage of the AP discounts! Which include merchandise until May 3rd.

Yes thats why it doesnt matter whether it is the 3rd or 5th, Disneyland is still going to start the annual pass from the date you first used your ticket.

As long as block outs aren't a concern I'd upgrade as soon as you've used your MM if that's important to you.

Hey Neighbor!

Thanks everyone for your help! I must have been looking at the SoCal blockout dates, because I see that only Saturdays in April are blocked out for the DAP.

We are planning a trip to DL in December 2011...so if I understand this right..we'll buy a three day pass so we can get the MM, then I want to upgrade to an AP. So will that AP expire from the date I first used my 3 day pass or the first day that I use my AP?

Just get a premium pass, you will get free parking and no blackout days.

Don't go enough to justify the extra cost. it's easier to plan my times around the blockout days. When I buy AP's we will usually go about 3 times during that year. That breaks down to once paying full price, once paying about half price and once free. And that makes it worth it to me.

This advice may not be the best if someone is not going to go to the Resort enough to warrant the additional cost. Depending upon how many days they are going to visit, how many times they may (or may not) be able to return during a 12-month window, and whether a car is even a factor are all issues that go in to considering if a premium is a right best-value choice.

You hit the nail on the head! If I go 3 times in one year and buy 3 day PH's each time I'll spend $2028 on tickets. The Premium AP would only save me about $272. Whereas buying the Deluxe AP for the same number of trips saves me $832. All I have to do is plan my vacations around the blockout days. Not a bit problem since there are few blockout days that really matter for the Deluxe AP. (I don't really care to go on weekends or holidays anyway) As far as the extra discounts that the Premium gives me, I'd be hard pressed to rack up $560 in discounts. I'm just not that big a spender.
