Not quiet sure why I choose North Carolina, other than its warmer than New England, and closer to Disney, but I'm seriously considering moving to North Carolina.

Can anyone give me any advice? I was thinking Fayetteville since it's right off Route 95 and seems like a quiet town.

I have three children, ages 13, 11 and 5. The 13 year old will be starting 7th grade (Jr here); the 11 year old has PPD and Mild MR and is placed in a highly school and the 5 year old will be starting kidergartean (sp).

Thanks!@

I don't think it is a "quiet little town". It is basically the closest suburb to Fort Bragg, which has the 82nd Airborne Division and which is one of the more highly populated military bases in the US, and also Pope Air Force Base.

Agreed. Fayetteville isn't a sleepy little burb. It's quite busy.

What they said...ain't nothing quiet about Fayetteville! Have you thought about the Charlotte or Raleigh area?

I lived in Fayetteville for a year
We kept wondering why it was thundering -we were finally told it was artillery:)

Seriously -almost everyone there is in the military or used to be. We felt a little left out -since we weren't.

Not sure Fayetteville would be my choice. You might want to research a little further.

Fayetteville is also a college town or close to it (if memory serves). My brother when to Methodist College there and I don't recall there being a whole lot there.

I've never personnally been, but I hear good things about Asheville. My former boss's baby mama (and their son) lived there and he used to go visit quite a bit and spoke highly of the area.

Before to long New England is going to be completely empty. Everyone around here is either thinking about moving to NC, or is getting ready to move to NC or has already moved there.

The target area seems to be the Raleigh area with Cary, NC as the end location. My daughter moved there last year. It is a beautiful area a lot like New England without the ocean or mountains. I'm afraid that before too long the population will be shoulder to shoulder ex-northerners.

That joke around the area concerning Cary, NC is that C A R Y stands for Containment Area for Relocated Yankees. ;)

Friends of ours moved to Mooresville about 30 minutes or so outside of Charlotte and they love it. We visited once in the fall and thought their town was really nice.

How about Charleston, SC? Savannah, GA? Beaufort, SC? If we were to move, I'd go closer to the coast and those are all neat cities. Greenville, SC is also nice and basically in the mountains so you'll get some definite seasons. I know these are all further south than NC, but all worth a look. :)

As far as researching schools, maybe this will help:

I don't think it is the only thing you need to look at, but at least it will give you basic school info and you can research further on the school websites, etc. if you decide to pursue areas of NC further

I live in Hillsborough, which is between Durham and Chapel Hill. Small town, good schools and just about anything you'd want within a 45 minuted drive. We are 2-3 hours from the mountains and 2-3 hours from the beach and only 9 hours from WDW.:goodvibes

Hum, so you guys are telling "happily single" who happens to love a man in uniform, that there are not one, but TWO military bases close to Fayetteville? :lmao::lmao:

Actually I will check out HIllsboro. I'm looking for a mid-size city that is safe for my kids. I guess living in RI I am spoiled. Nothing is more than a 10-15 minute drive (mall, grocery, Target)

So, in Hillsborough, we have SuperWalmart, as well as 3 grocery stores, Home Depot and lots of fast food restaurants. There are other stores as well. There are a few sit down restaurants, but nothing fancy. Malls--there is a pretty good sized one about 10 minutes away in Durham and there is a huge one about 20 minutes away on the other side of Durham. Both have movie theaters, and there is also at least two more movie theaters within 15 minutes of us as well. SuperTarget is about 15 minutes away as well.

It's a small town, but has pretty much everything I could need. It is also located at the junction of two major interstates--I-85 (North-South) and I-40(East-West), which is great when you want to travel.

Feel free to PM me any questions. I have lived here for 11 years and in Chapel Hill for 8 years before that.

As a former RI'der in NC, I would stay away from areas that are very 'southern'.
They can pick up the accent in a NY minute!

As a life-long North Carolinian, Fayetteville is definitely not where I would choose. The AF base is a smaller one, but Ft. Bragg is a mega base.

I'll give you one piece of advice, though: please don't come to North Carolina without a job. We're not the jobs mecca we were a few years ago -- our employment rate is over 10%.

We had an intern in our office last year who had never lived or spent much time outside Rhode Island (got his degree from Brown). North Carolina blew him away, so much so that less than six months later, he was back here to live! He says the people are amazingly friendly and accepting of him and that he just can't believe the big, wide straight roads!

:lmao: That's true. But you say that like it's a bad thing. We love everyone - we're Southerners!

Hi from Durham, NC! First off DH said I MUST tell you that they call Fayetteville FayetteNAM.....lol. He's a lifer of NC whereas I'm a transplant form NY. We both graduated from NCCU here in Durham and work for companies located in RTP area. I absolutely love the area! I have friends that live in Cary and Chapel Hill, I've lived for 2 yrs in Raleigh, and my DDs cheer in Hillsborough. The Raleigh/Durham and surrounding areas really offer everything. Wake county schools have been 'going through something's' here lately but I do agree with torinsmom that between all these counties you are sure to find good schools and that quiet town you are looking for. Just have to really research each place. When I say I live in Durham people are like really..isn't crime high and it's always busy there. However, people tend to forget about North Durham which still has a lot of country appeal to it yet is still close to things. And Hillsborough is the same....nice, quite town but still within reach. I have a sister that also lives in Charlotte which can be a little busy but again...it also has surrounding areas that aren't as busy but easily accessible to Charlotte. I'll stop here but will say this...I've lived in Jacksonville and Asheville as well and DH is from Asheville. Have family all over NC so feel free to PM me if you have specific questions about any area of NC.

Good luck!

The rumor I've heard and confirmed by a number of Southwest Airlines flight attendants, is SWA will start flying in/out of Charleston and Greenville in 2011. Another plus for those cities.
