My husband and I are seriously considering becoming a DVC member. Can we use our points to stay at the Grand Floridian or the Contemporary or even the All Stars. I can't seem to find this information out quickly. Please advise

You can use your points to stay at those hotels (I don't think you can stay at All Star). BUT you will be using alot more points than if you stayed at the DVC resorts.

The DVC resorts are ALOT nicer than the All Star.

You can stay at the resorts you listed on points, however, those stays require more points per night than DVC resorts. DVC points are most economical when used at DVC resorts. I have the 2007/08 point schedule for resorts and can't locate the precise number required for stays at those you've mentioned.

I've sent you a PM with some detailed info

Well, if your intent is to always stay at those places, then DVC is not for you. The best value is to stay in the DVC accommodations. Now WHY anyone wants to stay in a hotel room when you can stay in a 1,2,or 3 bedroom suite for less points is beyond my thinking. You CAN stay at the GF or any of the moderates or Deluxes that do not have DVC's connected to them, but they are considered "trading out of system", so the point cost is high enough to make it not a good value. Not sure why anyone would want to stay at All Stars instead of a DVC for sure.

I think diane's answer is right on.

I wonder why they dont allow reservations at the value resorts on points ?

I think because the whole concept of DVC is such that you are buying in, so that you no longer have to stay at resorts of that quality when you are at WDW.

I think because there would be no fair points cost. Even with a modest reduction from Mod points costs, the price would be way too high.

I also suspect they don't really want DVC being associated with the value resorts. I'm actually surprised that they allow trades to Mods. DVC really considers the DVC resorts to be on a par with the Deluxe resorts.

Yep...and not just Disney resorts of whatever caliber, but anywhere but DVC.

Any non-DVC stay is trading out -- and there is much less value trading out than staying within DVC.

We often get this same question phrased another way -- can I use my DVC points to go to Paris, or Chile, or Shanghai? Yes you can, but the value is much, much less than what you'll get using DVC for DVC stays.

If you are interested in staying in other-than-DVC resorts, there are several fine timeshare programs which offer much better value for trading than DVC. Dean is our resident timeshare expert and I'm sure he can give you some good advice on trading questions.
