here's my "big idea"...please tell me if this is doable. here goes...

if i become a member and buy in, but "share" the price of purchasing w/another family (let's say my brother). would we have problems booking & using the facilities? this way, i can obviously make reservations for our family one year (since it'd be under our names), and then, i can make reservations for my brother's family the next year, and their family will go. so we'd take separate vacations every other year, but have a place to stay. am i making sense? or maybe the owner/dvc member needs to be present?

any info is greatly appreciated!! :flower:

You could do this if you wanted to. The official owner ( if not joint ownership ) needs to make the reservations but the "owner" doesn't need to be the one using the reservation.

The membership can be deeded in both your name and your brothers name...you would both be members. However, I would advise a written agreement between the two of you that includes some basics like: Party A gets to use points from odd numbered use years, Party B can use even use year points, what to do if oneparty decides to sell, and the other doesn't want to sell. Also know that if either party goes into bankruptcy, or has a judgement against them, it would effect the membership.

If both parties are not listed as owners on the deed, I would not split the cost...it can lead to "family" problems down the road.

There are a couple of things that need to be considered.

Since he wouldn't be the owner of record, there's a possibility that your brother and his family wouldn't get the DVC discounts. There have been reports that the KTTW (room keys) are different for owners and renters.

Would you brother be sharing in the annual maintenance fees as well? That might become a tax problem. Since he's not the owner of record, he wouldn't be able to deduct from his income tax.

I'm sure there are others here who have done the same thing, and they can fill you in on these kind of details.

Yes, you could work that arrangement. A word of caution. If the other party (in this case your brother) is not on the deed, then he has no contract with DVD. In other words if you and him were to have a falling out, then he cannot make reservations and use his "portion" of the points.

Negative thinking? Perhaps, but you may want to have a wriiten agreement between you and the other party. That way there is no misunderstanding.

Also, your brother could not get the Annual Pass discount if he is not on the deed, since he would not officially be a member.

Negatives of brother not being on deed is that he wouldn't get DVC member discounts and could not make reservations.

Negatives of brother being on deed is that he could use all the points, there is nothing in the system that would ensure that the points are split evenly between joint owners, it is a gentleman's agreement between you and your brother. If your brother were to go through a divorce or a bankruptcy it could impact the points, the courts could order that DVC be sold to pay creditors or ex-wife etc. It may not seem like a possibility now, but DVC is a long term commitment.

One idea that I had seen suggested that seems to work is for your and your brother to each buy an equal size contract. Of course this depends on how many points you were planning on getting. Rather than 1 300 pt contract, get 2 150 pt contracts. You can then transfer points between the contracts to make larger reservations etc. Brother would get the discounts because he is the owner, if something bad comes up (family falling out, divorce etc.) the points are seperate and you'd always have your half of the points.

Would you buy a house with him? Pretty much the same thing.

You have to think down the road, what if something changes. One or the other can no longer afford it or doesn't want to own it any more. Friction between family members. He wants to use your year or you want to use his year and the other doesn't want to change. What happens if you need to bank or borrow points?

What about each of you buying a small resale. You will each have points you could bank and borrow every other year for yourselves. That way each of you would ge geting your own benefits, and if there are problems down the road, with your relationship, no one looses. If you wanted to pool your points, you could do that too.

disney requires more points to share - I think it is 210 (instead of 150) - you also must appoint someone to be in charge (not necessary an owner) - if you and your brother can't or won't decide on something - this person will!!!

I would go this route:you buy as many points as you can afford. then you can put your brother (or anyone else) on as an associate member.

as an associate member he can make reservations.

DVC member and guests are treated the same. Now II (exchangers) or paying through CRO guests are treated differently.

most of the discounts he should get.

he won't get the discounts on annual passes - but I think that is the only one. No way - I think the golf thing he won't get either. Nor the valet parking - both I think require the blue member card - not just the ID (key). Now if you and he are there together and he has prove that his home address and your are the same - I think he can get the discount.

now there were rumors of DVC maybe given associate members the right to also buy the annual pass tickets with the DVC discount.

I also made my brother an owner with me. but I didn't. I did make him an associate owner. He can make reservations if he wants too.

the reservation WILL always come to your home!!! it won't come to his home - he is not listed as the owner.

I agree each should buy there own.

wow! thanx for all your input/insight/thoughts/etc. really appreciate it. i understand some of your concern regarding the long run, family falling out, divorce, etc. it was just a thought i had!

some of you mentioned that my brother won't be getting the benefits...can you elaborate on what type of benefits there are? an as for annual pass, that would only mean to wdw right? i don't think we would even be considering purchasing that. but again, thank you for all your info. :flower:

I think maybe adding my mother in law as an associate member on our contracts may solve a problem I have with trying to make/change a reservation while I'll be out of the country.

Can anyone give me any more info about how that works?

I'd trust my MIL with my life...but just in case something horrible happened (like she was forced into bankrupcy, etc) I could remove her privileges at my discretion, right? And is it correct that the DVC would not be considered one of her assets, either for tax purposes or legal reasons?
