Just bought a backpack for next school year for my DD6. LL Bean has their critter backpacks on sale for $15 (regularly $38) + free shipping. (Colors and designs are probably more suited for girls.) I bought a Lands End one for her this past school year and it was good, but looks beat up right now.
As an aside, the old LL Bean one is now DH's "Disney" bag that we carry at the parks (still looks brand new, even after a year of first-grader abuse from my older DD)....perfect size...Not too big, not too small.
