Has anyone seen any reviews of this or know when it is coming out? My Rebel XT has worked well for me and I have always loved Canon products. The new one is looking interesting. Maybe for Christmas if the word is good.

I believe the street date is sometime in the first week of May. Looks like a very nice camera.

You said you're upgrading from the XT, have you thought about jumping to the xxD series? I just got myself a 50d, and the build quality and picture quality are fantastic:thumbsup2. The T1i has the same image processor and sensor as the 50d, but the ruggedness, pentaprism viewfinder make the 50d a great camera.

Just food for though :). dpreview has a good preview here:http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canoneos500d/

I just got home with one! I've been stalking the camera store for a few weeks and the owner knew that I'm leaving for Disney on Sunday so he promised to call as soon as he got one in. It came in today and I was at the store checking out within 15 minutes!

I don't have a review yet, but I'm sure hoping I love this camera!

the problem i have with that review is even though i know they don't really have step by step models to compare, they are comparing a camera that costs twice as much according to their price comparison....they should have really added the 50d to the comparison for more "apples to apples" imo.

I totally agree. I thought it was a bit odd to have the D5000 in there but out of the three I was most impressed by the D90 which was surprising to me. I thought the D90 was more attractive to an entry level dSLR user. I'm usually one to like the more expensive toys but not in this case. This review would've been much more informative if it was the D90 vs the T1i and the 50D vs. the D5000. Overall, I was unimpressed by the T1i but the HD video capabilities may win some people over. Personally, I want a camera to be a camera. My camcorder can take pictures and shoot video but I've never even thought of using it as a camera. Maybe I'm old school. :confused3

that was exactly what i thought when i was reading it..i don't really get the trend toward video on still cameras but somebody must like it, even if it's just the marketing team:rotfl::confused3

Do you mean the D90 vs. the 50D, and the T1i vs. D5000? The D90 and 50D are higher classes of camera; the T1i and D5000 are the new Canon/Nikon offerings and are direct competitors to each other.

Video is starting to be seen in DSLRs because a lot of folks are clamoring for the ability to utilize their interchangeable lenses for videos; unlike a camcorder, where the lens is fixed the whole time, you can swap out for wide/angle and close up shots, as well as change the aperture and DOF on your subjects.

I'd wait for the reviews to come; the review posted pretty much just spits out all specs and doesn't really say anything. Although I will say this, the 920k resolution LCD on the T1i is, quite simply, outstanding. I have the same one on my 50d, and I can't imagine going back to a lower resolution screen!

I am going to be waiting for a while to see the reviews for the T1i. The D50 really isn't in my budget.

I have the Rebel xTi and am going to upgarde to the 50D even with this camera out there. The video ability is interesting but from what I understand about these is that your lens has to be in the manual mode so it can slow down your focusing. I know there are a couple of high end, high price tag dslr cameras with video capabilitly but I'm one who's thinking that you just can't truly combine these two. Maybe it's just me. While this new Canon has a lot of the same features as the 50D, I have to think that the 50D is still a far better camera as it's twice as much. I think there will be a lot of folks getting happy over this camera though. I will ask about it at the camera shop I go to but will more than likely stick with my thoughts on getting the 50D.

Get the 50D, you'll love it! I just got one myself a few weeks ago, and I couldn't be happier. The autofocus is very quick, the build is very sturdy, and it feels great in the hand. Also, the pentaprism viewfinder makes a BIG difference in terms of magnification and brightness. And, although it's of no consequence whatsoever, the shutter sound is much more satisfying when it clicks :)

I love camera sounds! I'm hoping to get to the camera shop tomorrow. I'm glad to hear that it "feels" good as it's heavier than the Rebel I have.

I went the other direction, going from a 30D to a Rebel Xsi. I completely agree with what you say about the viewfinder, for every Rebel up to the Xsi. The viewfinder on that model is much larger and brighter than before and although it is still not quite up to xxD level the difference is not noticeable.

Build quality, if we go by feel, definitely goes to the xxD! Realistically I wonder if the plastic Rebel would fare any worse from a hit that might crack the magnesium xxD. Either way I sure don't care to find out!

The shutter sound, meh. For sure the Rebel looks and feels like less of a camera than the xxD. Image quality, I am not sure there is a significant difference, especially from RAW. The bottom line is that we have it really good with all these choices! :)

I enjoy my Canon XSi (450D) and don't plan to upgrade anytime soon but I admit the new Canon T1i (500D) looks interesting. You may not think you want video but if you have small children that feature would be pretty cool, I have tons of old VHS tapes of my children taken in the days of those big shoebox size heavy VHS recorders
