I had my eyes done in 1997. My prescription was -6.5 in both eyes. I'm really glad I took the plunge and did it. It's great to wake up in the morning and not have to fumble round for you glasses to read the alarm clock. I now no longer need glasses at all (although I'm sure as I get older I will still need reading glasses : ).
Touch wood, I've had no problems or major side effects, although I do get a slight halo/star burst effect with one eye at night when looking at lights. Although it doesn't bother me, and the better eye seems to cancel it out.
I had my eyes done at a local hospital, and before deciding to go through with the procedure they gave a talk and tour of the facilities and explained the details of the operation and after care in great detail. They also discussed the possible side effects. They also gave me a detailed examination to ensure I was suitable for the operation.
I found the operation very straight forward and fairly pain free. The actual laser part of the procedure only took about 10 minutes per eye.
At the time I had my eyes done they would only do one eye at a time with a long gap before treating the second eye. But, I believe they now do both eyes at the same time.
If your DH decides to keep with his glasses try SpecSavers, I used to find them very cheap
