My hubby and I are seriously thinking about moving to Lancaster. My DH will be retired from the Dept. of Sanitation, so we would have his pension, plus he would get another job. I work as a bank supervisor, but I would even be a teller or even a cashier, as long as I had a decent job!
How are the schools there and how is the job market? We can't afford a house here in NY and we are looking for a change of pace too.Tell me I'm not crazy for considering a move!

PA is a lot cheaper than NY :) Lancaster is definitely in the country. Moving from Queens, I'm not sure how happy you'd be that far out. I graduated HS in Montgomery County, PA. The schools in the area are quite good. In Bucks county, check out the Upper Bucks & Lower Bucks SDs.

It may be country...but there are still plenty within driving distance...like Walmart and such...I could live with that! We want peace and quiet, a big backyard and things like that.

Oh, I'm so jealous of you. I was born in Lancaster, and absolutely loved it. It is MUCH smaller than the big city you're used to, but there's plenty to do, and plenty of things around. I love the mall there (Park City,) it's still my favorite mall to go to:rotfl: Yes, I'm a little biased. It sounds like you probably don't have young kids anymore, but there's a lot to do with kiddos. You have a kids amusement park (Dutch Wonderland,) and Hershey Park is only a 30 min. drive. You're also within a pretty good driving distance to Philly, Harrisburg, even Baltimore and New York.

Honestly, I can't answer any of the questions you asked, but I love going back to visit, and would move there in a minute.

We moved out to Western NJ from NY and I have to say it takes a little bit to get used to having to drive everyplace. For us everything is at least 15 minutes away. Which doesn't seem bad but when you are used to walking to the store - it takes getting used to.
And the night I went to walmart I cried. I never thought I would get used to that.
But I did. I liked the quiet. The NO TRAFFIC!! and the kids are happy. It took about a year but now I am sold on the country. (although I do miss city water)

We're about 25 mins from Lancaster, but we end up there a lot. My OB and hospital is in Lancaster, right near the Park City mall a PP mentioned. I actually prefer Lancaster to where we are right now, but DH's work is east of where we are, Lancaster is west. It's very pretty, very scenic, picturesque. LOTS of cows, lots of corn. :lmao: Houses are reasonable. I'd send my DD to school there, and I'm picky. There are lots of little towns surrounding Lancaster, so that will affect the school you're in. (Well, not *you* but you get what I mean.)

I'm sure it will take some adjusting, depending on what part of NY you're from. It's a nice place, and the people are friendly. :)

HTH!

Don't forget the amazing Turkey Hill ice tea and ice cream :worship:

I went to college in Lancaster County (Millersville U.)....love that area. There are many directions you could head...all fairly rural but close enough to city. My SIL and BIL lived in Lititz for many years until they relocated to York, which isn't too far.

A lot of NY/NJ people relocate here to the Lehigh Valley. Just another location to consider looking. We are in a great location...an hour and a half north of Philly, a little less than two hours west of NYC, under two hours from the Jersey shore, an hour from the Poconos. I used to sell real estate, and I sold many, many homes in Forks Twp and Palmer Twp to NJ/NY folks!:thumbsup2
