I know that getting elem ed jobs here in NE is tough but we are moving to the midwest, not sure if it's better there.

I have a bachelor's in something totally unrelated to elem. ed. I am not sure how to go about that with a degree already.

I am just looking for some direction and input since I know there are a lot of teachers on here.

I think it took my brother two more years of schooling plus student teaching to get his teacher's degree. He, also, had a 4-year degree in something totally different.

Good luck!:D

I think 2 years is about accurate. Maybe less.

Caution! Don't let anyone get you down about this idea. Go for it if it's really in your heart! I promise that you will hear both sides of the job. You will hear the gripes from the teacher that is no longer satisfied in her job, or that may just not love it the way they first did. And you will also hear the side from the Teacher who LOVES their job and cannot imagine doing anything else!

I'm not a teacher, but I will be in 2005. I have heard totally negative things from teachers, and very positive ones too.

Good Luck, I'm sure you'll have lots of input from those here on the DIS.

You should check with the state where you are thinking of teaching. In Florida, if you have a 4 year degree (in any field) you can get a teaching job. BUT, you have to be taking classes while you are teaching. If I remember corretly, you only need about 5 or 6 classes to be a teacher. You can either do student teaching or work as a teacher. I know that to teach elementary school, you need some additional reading classes.

Good Luck, when my children are older, I would like to teach (I am about 1/2 way done with the classes to get my masters--I have a degree in psychology).

You have three options
Alternate route, where a school hires you with your current degree, you take classes and get mentored by the school and get your certificate. They need to really need teachers to take the time to do this, but there are frequently schools who will do it.
Go back to school and take the educ sequence of classes.
Some schools offer an accelerated masters program for people with their bachelors who want to teach. Time here is approx. 11/2 yrs. straight thru summers holidays and all. Good deal if you can get it as you end up with the masters degree.

:D

I say go for it! I did my stint at community college and then took almost two years off to decide what it was that I really wanted to do with my life. I have always liked working with kids, so becoming a teacher was what i decided to do. I graduated in May and right now I'm subbing, but I will hopefully have my own classroom by next fall. Good luck!

If you teach math, science or special ed you will do very well. All school districts need those teachers.

This is a great idea. I'll bet you make a great teacher
