Things you really hated that you're glad future generations don't have to experience?

Corporal punishment in schools. When I was in elementary school, Wednesday was 'Paddle Day.' We would have an assembly on that day and before we got to singing songs or whatever it was we did during assembly, the 'bad' kids would be taken up on the stage and paddled by the principal.

wow. I also grew up during the age of paddling. Both at school and at home. But not in front of the whole school! When paddling happened at school, the whole class was told to put our heads on our desks and the student getting paddled would be taking into the hallway. The door to the classroom was kept open so we could hear, but not see. There would be either 2 teachers or a teacher and the principle, so there was never just one adult paddling with no witness present. Anyway, I remember the sounds to this day. We were told to stay put and if we got caught out of our seat we would be next.

I never got swats at school, but plenty of times at home. Too many to count.

Just the threat of swats was enough to keep me compliant at school. This didn't work at home though, when ever i got spanked, I escalated and would fight and kick and scream. It was not something that I ever subjected my kids too. NEVER.

Why did it work at school but not at home? I expect that's a deep subject that would need some time with my therapist to explore. lol

I always hated using the card catalog at the library to research things and find books in the stacks. And I hated researching using encyclopedias. It's amazing to me that we can just Google ANYTHING we want to learn about.

Calling the movie theater to hear the list of movies and time shown. You had to listen to all. the. times. while scrambling to write down what *might* work only to be interrupted/have to call another location/etc. Bliss when it was published in the newspaper!

Typing on a typewriter and using that "correct tape" that only made your mistakes more apparent.

I was watching The Price is Right the other day and one of the prizes to price was a bottle of white out. The contestant was in her 20's and clearly had no idea what that even was. She kept placing it on the higher priced tiers and I think it cost her the game.

  • Pay toilets
  • Missing phone calls because you weren't home
  • Cars used to break down more often

Party lines
Pay toilets
The pull down cloth rolls in restrooms back in the 60’s and 70’s to dry your hands on.
Making a mistake using a typewriter, then having to backspace, stick correcting tape down, and hitting the wrong key again to “erase” it.
Carbon paper

COVID school shut-downs. Dear God let that never ever be a thing again.

Uber-expensive long distance phone calls.

As far as that goes, pay phones.

Having to use punch cards for computer programs.....one card out of place and it didn;t work. I hated that class in school
