I need some ideas of things to do at night. We will arrive around 4:00 and I would like something fun to do that night. The next day we will be going to the running expo, Disney Springs and then hanging out at the resort pool/movie.

Where will you be staying? If you're staying substantially closer to one park than the others I would be inclined to tell you to get a good snack or counter service meal at that park and check out the evening entertainment. Normally I don't like the idea of going to a park on arrival day, but it sounds like the next day you won't be doing much park time. If you have the option of FP+ you could ride a few rides without having to wait, then grab some snacks and do Wishes/Illuminations/Fantasmic/whatever. Then head home after that to get a good night's sleep.

Otherwise you could check out Boardwalk area, walk around and see the street performers. It doesn't seem like you would want to be out terribly late but if you did, I think there are some bars there open til midnight, and there's Jellyrolls of course!

You could get an ADR somewhere fun, like at an MK resort so you can watch Wishes from the beach after or the electric water pageant(if that's still a thing...). Or perhaps a character meal if you're into that.

Fireworks! Disney's fireworks are AMAZING. Wishes in the Magic Kingdom, IllumiNations in Epcot, and either Fantasmic or Star Wars fireworks (possibly both depending on times) in Hollywood Studios. Not sure when you're going to be there, so I didn't include Rivers of Light, which is supposed to open this year at Animal Kingdom (probably December 31st, LOL...just kidding...kind of).

If you're not into fireworks/nighttime shows, then I suggest going to the Magic Kingdom and riding rides while others are watching Wishes. Lines should be shorter, and some of the outside rides are more fun at night AND you can catch the fireworks while ON the ride! Pretty neat.

If Animal Kingdom is open late enough, that's another park that could be fun. They have a "tree awakening" projection show on the big tree, and an evening street festival, and I hear Expedition Everest is really, really fun at night.

But seriously. Fireworks.

Last time on arrival night we headed to DTD/DS ate at Wolfgang Puck Express and went to Cirque du Solil. So, one suggestion is to head to DS shop, eat somewhere cool see a movie or a dinner show like Spirit of Aloha, Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue or a character dining experience. Or you can just relax at your hotel and swim, eat something low key and maybe catch a outdoor movie. I guess it all depends on who is in your party and what they all prefer.
