Things people say wrong...a lot.

One of my personal pet peeves...

lol.. on the could care less remark..

I think I say it sometimes... BUT...I have thought about it too. If you are saying "I could care less" in regards to something you care nothing about... why do you care at all? Because, saying "I could care less" means you care about it and you wish you cared less... right? LOL:dance3:

Mmmmmm...Reesees Peesees :rotfl2:
I have always said Reeses to rhyme with Pieces. Of course, being in the UK I don't have many reasons to say it out loud! The shop where I can buy them from just has them on the shelf so I dont need to ask for them!

I have a friend who says ramdom instead of random. She also says frum instead of from. She even spells it frum. It drives me mad! :rotfl:

....She also says 'frum' instead of from. She even spells it frum. It drives me mad! :rotfl:

...we ALL say it that way in America....guess we are a country of MAD-HATTERS..... (although I personally don't know anyone who SPELLS it that way...;) )

Just this week I heard two different television 'experts', as in doctors or scientists, talk about how tall something was and refer to the 'heig-th'.

Come on people! The word ends with a T! HEIGHT!

Some of the pronunciations above are directly related to local dialects and, while they may be irksome, they are not wrong. Just pronunciations, though, not the wrong use of a word like irregardless and death instead of deaf.

I have been corrected for pronouncing Moscow, ID as Moss-Cow. No, no, no, it is Moss-Coe.

And a friend from up north corrected me (wrongly) for calling Cairo, IL Cay-roe. I understand that Cairo is in Egypt, with the I being pronounced instead of the A, but in Illinois, it is pronounced Cay-Roe everyday of the week.

I once knew a speech teacher who said Ax instead of Ask. And Pss-ghetti instead of spaghetti. And Pacific instead of specific. In a workshop where she was presenting. Hard to take her seriously after that!

Two biggest pet peeves:

exspecially (especially)
supposably (supposedly)

I was at the county-teacher-of-the-year awards a couple of months ago and one of the winners said "exspecially" in her speech!!!! I CRINGED.

Also, this one comes straight from teaching 4th grade, when people add the word "and" when they say a number. 436 is four hundred thirty-six, not four hundred and thirty-six.

I don't think you are all Mad-Hatters, its just I normally hear it pronounced 'From' and she says 'Frum' - no right or wrong, just strange to me.

...because the 'and' specifies that there is a decimal in the number - it separates the whole numbers from the fractional part of the number.....our organist does this at Sunday mass when he announces the page of the next song - drives me NUTS!!

Ah, I've stumbled on to one of my favorite topics :lmao:

I have someone in my family that says 'birfday' instead of birthday.

She celebrates the 'forf' of July instead of the 4th of July.

At Christmas, she hangs a 'reef' on her door instead of a wreath.

People who cannot hear are 'death' instead of deaf.

It makes me want to SCREAM! :scared1:

ETA: My own father, no matter how many times he's corrected, calls a gelati (Italian dessert) a jilopy.

Since I have trouble with "r" sounds and spent many years in speech class to help correct it, I would say your relative does not do this to be funny or anything else. Substituting "f" for "th" is a common speech issue. Listen to a small child learn to speak. Most start out doing the same thing but eventually
learn the correct way to pronounce it. For me if the letter is at the beginning of the word I am much more likely to pronounce it correctly. If it is anywhere else there is a possibility I will miss the "r" sound. I have to really work at it. SInce I have trouble pronouncing several words I am sure I would make you want to scream too.

I was trying to remember how we say Reese Cups around here. I think think we do say ReeSee but I have never really thought about it. Now I will listen for it every time!!! THANKS!!:lmao:

The one that has me cringing lately is the pronunciation of the word "your" by tv news reporters and advertising pitchmen. I know we're in Texas, but must they yell out, 'YORE' news authority, and 'YORE' best value in cars??....UGH!!!

I have a confession....

I add a "t" to the word "across". I didn't even know I did this until a coworker called me out.

So sorry :goodvibes.

My husband does that! It drives me loopy!

My dad says SimUlar instead of similar.

I can't stand when people don't know the difference between the word Advice and the word advise. They are not interchangeable!

As for Reese's, I always thought it was just a southern thing to call it Reesee's. I;ve hears southerners call it that my entire life as I am southern, but I've never heard any of my non-southern friends call it a Reesee's.:confused3

I've noticed several people say the name of Reese's peanut butter cups wrong. As far as I know, it only has the ONE way to say it. It's not like the word 'route,' or 'tomato' where you can say it two ways. And yet, I hear people pronounce Reese's as 'Ree-sees.' It's pronounced the way it looks on the package.

WHY do people pronounce it this way? What in the world makes them look at the word REESE'S and pronounce it as REE-SEES?!!

When I hear the word "REE-SEES" in person it irks me in a way that the mispronounciation of a candy shouldn't, but it does. That word is just too annoying.

And then you have REESE'S PIECES. Again, pronounced as read. But one person I know is adamant about saying it as REE-SEES PEE-SEES. Ree-sees Pee-sees! Why pronounce 'pieces' as 'pee-sees'?

Um...that turned into a strangely cathartic rant. :lmao:

Your turn! What is something you hear that's not said the way it should be? (Your name, a character's name, a location's name, etc...)

As someone who lives in Hershey, PA (home to Reese's) and works at the Hershey Corporation, I can tell you with comeplete certainty that every single person that works here- or at least that I have come into contact with- pronounces it REE-SEES. Even our President does. It annoys us who LIVE and WORK for Hershey to hear people pronounce it any other way!!

Here, people get off the car instead of get out of the car. After 25 years of living here, I still twitch when I hear it.

Probly instead of probably.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how you want 'from' to be pronounced. 'Frum' is all I've ever heard or said. How about a clue?

Ummm, isn't 'your' pronounced 'yore'? How do you pronounce it?

If they are talking about a cable car, then I'll go with 'off'. If they are talking about a Chevy, they are perhaps a bit strange.

I'm the same way when people say they are standing "on" line. Really? You are standing on top of the line??? That's quite a feat!! I usually just stand IN the line.

For the longest time I called TyLenol=TyAnol. I couldn't get my mouth to say the word correctly. I knew I was misprouncing it, but it wouldn't get through to my mouth. Now whenever I say it, I have to slow down and say "I need some Ty-Le-Nol"

People look at me like I'm stupid :(

FYI - Carter was assigned to Nu-cyu-ler subs while in the service after graduating from the Naval academy.

And studied Nu-cyu-ler physics in graduate school

lol.. on the could care less remark..

See why I have to re-read posts when people use that expression. :rotfl:

I'm wondering about this too -- I can't imagine either of them being pronounced any other way :confused3

I used to think it was really funny when Brits called aluminum "alumini-um" and then I realized they spell it differently too. :lmao:

My DH pronounces it Tymenol. :lmao: I thought he was just joking around until I asked him why he said that (thought it might be from when he was a kid). He didn't know he was saying it incorrectly. He also says kyoopon and nucular. :headache: It's a good thing I love him so much.

It's a tough word! :rotfl:

I do fine with most other common words. Just Tylenol that screws me up!

The one around here that drives me bonkers is that we have a town named "Chili." Nope, not like the food. It's pronounced "Chi" (as in the tea) - "Lie" (as in, "he told a lie.") It's taking me forever to get used to that.

Oh, and Avon. Not like the cosmetics company that's Ay-von. Nope. It's Ahhh-von.

It's like we're trying to be snooty. :snooty:
