they've got fridge swaps, what about a stroller swap

I've seen fridge swaps on this board before and was wondering if anyone thought of initiating a stroller swap???

my niece's DD will be 5 -1/2 when we all go (4/29 - 5/6) and doesn't have a stroller anymore. Those $20 ones from Wal-mart won't work because they won't hold a 45# kid. So I guess the only option is to buy a Maclaren Volo for the trip - to the tune of close to $100 (including tax & shipping) - which holds up to a 55# kid. I hate to see them spend $100 and not use the stroller again so I was thinking maybe a stroller swap... or a charity.

Disney actually sells a 40 dollar stroller made by Kolcraft at nearly all its stores. I am not sure what the weight is but it looks really sturdy. I am thinking of buying one when I get down there for my 7yo (I know, I know but she weighs LESS than my 4yo and is almost as short. She is TEEEENY and gets sooo tired) but I won't need it when I get home so I was going to ask when it gets closer if any DISers are going down when I leave so I can just give it to them. Aug22 is when I leave.

Well I'd be interested. I'm looking to donate our Graco at the end of our trip in November, and I am looking for something inexpensive/sturdy for my will-be-5YO's occasional use while we are there.

OK, the weight limit just has to be an extremely over-conservative protection from lawsuit kind of thing! LOL!

I seriously don't think it means a stroller is just going to collapse on itself it you put a 40# child in it and the manufacturer lists 35#. I know we kept each of my kids in a standard Kolcraft or Graco mid-size stroller with basket underneath until they were 8 years old. They were probably between 50-60 pounds at that point. We used it for many Disney trips with no trouble at all. I bought it at a resale shop for probably $35 max and left it at Cypress Pointe one trip by the dumster to hopefully be passed on to someone else. Check your local children's resale shops.

yep, I figured I'd call the kids consignment shops in my area NOW and tell them to be on the lookout for an umbrella-type stroller - Maclaren Volo preferred (as that's weight listed for 55#). (There are a couple in the area that I can call.) If one comes up, I'll ask them to call me. Of course, they'll probably mark it up a bit but I'd rather have that then need to pay full price for something I'll use one time. Worse case scenario, I'll buy a new one (I think I can get it for $80+tax & free shipping).

It would just be nice to be able to leave the stroller there and have someone pick it up when I'm leaving. Of course, I'm sure that would guarantee me to get a bounceback weekend if I left it.

under Maclaren Volo specs: Carrying Capacity - up to 15kg / 55lb (US)
perhaps you're looking at a different model Maclaren; they've got so many! And, for Maclaren, they have differences year over year. From what I can tell, the least expensive ones are 2006 models which only have 1 position so be sure if you're getting one you understand all the features if buying on line.

If you find any other brands that hold up to 55#, please post it. I'll do the same but so far this is all I've found. My niece's 5 year old is between 45-50#and we are going there in early May so I'd rather get one for her weight, even if it's just a week, rather than worry about the sturdiness while we're on vacation! I hope this helps!

renting is an option; however, I've envisioned her "sticking out" of this low-riding WDW stroller and me leaning over pushing this antiquated stroller (which makes me wonder if someone can share a pix of a single WDW rental stroller?). Besides, we'll be in parks for 6 days and @ $8/day for a multi-day rental (or $10/day for a single day use), it's almost as cost effective to buy my own and the Maclaren volo umbrella is proported to be not as back-breaking to reach the handles as the cheaper ones plus be easy to push. Of course, if I could get it at a consignment shop, I'd buy it. Otherwise, I'm still on the fence as to which way to go!

We absolutely LOVE the strollers at Disney. Those strollers definately had the toddlers or preschoolers in mind when they were made. My son can stretch out so nicely in them. He actually falls a sleep at some point. I always take a beach towel, duel purpose, he can sit on it, or cover up w/ it if he gets chilly(not in May) or use it to dry off he gets drenched, I also bring him a blow up bathtub pillow he uses for his head to rest if he gets sleepy. We stopped taking our strollers 2 years ago. I refuse to be held hostage throughout the airports with those kid accessories, to much of a pain, it is worth the money.

Graco Quattro Tour Delux goes to 50 pounds, and is really nice and fairly inexpensive. (we bought ours on clearance for $60)---oh nevermind the Ipo looks better, it folds smaller I'm sure.

I don't know what we're going to do about strollers...we have a baby, a toddler, and a 5 yr old.

Graco is up to 50 # carrying capacity and weight of the stroller is about double the Maclaren (17.5# vs. 8.6#).

So far, Maclaren's winning out; however, I'm now reconsidering a Disney rental after hearing logansmummy's report! anyone else?

not sure what you had in mind - but we will be arriving in orlando on May 12th and although we are bringing our baby in his own stroller, we were thinking of going to Walmart to get DS4 one just for the trip and to leave behind when we leave on 6/4- so I would be interested in sorting something!!

up until a few years ago there was a very organized and long standing stroller swap on the dis (long before i ever saw any of the other swaps that exist now) but i think some issues came up that ended it.

that said-the strollers we've rented at wdw have been great-since they are the jogger's type they are plenty long enuf for a child to stretch out in-and they manuver realy easily. we did need a stroller a few years ago, primarily for manuvering the airports for ds who was over the 35# weight limit of most strollers. we ended up buying an umbrella stroller at walmart for less than 20.00 and we had no problems exceed the weight limit by close to 10#. i knew we would'nt need it after our last night at the parks so i purposely sat that evening and people watched until i saw an exhausted parent carrying an equaly exhausted toddler and offered it to them. they were thrilled-they had brought their larger stroller but had left it at the hotel when they found it too large and cumbersome to navigate the evening crowds. i told them to keep it if they wished or to just 'pass it on' in a similar fashion their last day.

The strollers at MK (they were the only place we needed to get one) are absolutely wonderful, like you are pushing nothing at all. love love love them. Only thing is it could use some padding under the tushie.

We rent the ones at Disney. I agree with PP's about bringing a towel or something for the many uses it could have: under the bum, pillow, etc. DD was four on our last trip, and we rented, and we will be renting this upcomming Oct for our trip, DD will be 5 then (She weighs 45 pounds now, so I am guessing just under 50 lbs by that time). Although a stroller swap does sound interesting, and definatly something to think about if enough people are on board with it.....
