I have been reading all these post on sea sickness, i feel stupid by what i am about to ask but can or how can a person know if they might be proned to sea sickness, is there a way to tell, some suggest taking pills a couple of days before your cruise and i would hate to miss out on my cruise because i would be sea sick is there any indicators

thanks a bunch

If you get sick on rides, in the car, airplanes, motion sickness of any kind, then you may or may not be prone to sea sickness. I am prone to sea sickness, and I only got a little queazy the very first cruise, first night until I got my sea legs. That was the 7 night western...after the first night I was fine. Because I knew I would probably feel a bit yucky..I took dramamine before we left for the port in the morning, and then again that evening. I did have to wear my sea bands the first night. After that, nothing, it was definately smooth sailing.

On our second cruise, I took the precautionary dramamine that morning before leaving for the port..probably never needed it. All was great.

The ship is so smooth, totally excellent.

I have no idea if I would get sea sick & have no desire to find out. I do know that I can't ride on a merry go round or even watch the kids on the tea cups without feeling naseous if I don't take bonine before going to the park so I start taking it the day before we cruise. We had 15-20+ foot swells on our first cruise & I didn't feel sick at all...so I will continue to do that. :)

Funny story. My DH went to a college that's affiliated with the Merchant Marine. They have a ship that they use for training and during his four years he traveled to Italy, Spain, Puerto Rico, etc.

Well, we go on a Holland America cruise to Bermuda for our honeymoon. He was making me crazy the entire time pointing out what every nut and bolt on the ship is for. I was seriously considering pushing him overboard. It didn't help that I had never cruised and was feeling a bit green around the edges for the first day or two.

As we were heading back to NY, it got a bit choppy. I hear "how are you doing?" and answer "I'm doing fine." With a "well I'm not" Popeye heads to the bathroom and is sick as a dog. The Admiral couldn't take it. :teeth:

Lesson, you just never know. Fortunately, neither of us has ever gotten sick on the Disney ships, but I've seen others who didn't fare as well.

I am a bit prone to motion sickness. Dramamine / Bonine and I don't get along all that great. I end up in a dazed fog for hours and really don't enjoy the experience. Then I discovered "Seabands" on our second cruise.

Seabands are made of fabric with elastic and go on your wrists. Inside the band is a plastic "marble" (for lack of a better explanation) that presses on the inside of your wrist. Supposedly it stimulates a pressure point that helps you from getting nauseated. Ever since I started wearing them I have had no issues. There was one issue I did have but we were sailing in nasty seas of like 40 feet. Everyone was ill.

Of course, it could all be in my head and in fact it does nothing. But at least for me, they work great! These bands can usually be found at Walgreens-type stores. It's a good alternative to drugs.
