Today the BRAC(Base Realignment and Closure) Commission voted to keep Naval Submarine Base here in Groton Connecticut open. I've been a Firefighter here for 18 years and this was my second go round with the BRAC.
The Commission also voted to keep open Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in New Hampshire and jobs were saved there as well.
Please keep in mind there were other facilities that weren't as lucky as we were and were voted to close so we must keep those people in our thoughts.
My family and I can now enjoy our upcoming Sept. trip to the world and not have any worries when we come home!!!

Arsenal Island wasn't so lucky :(

Yeah!!!!!

I have been reading the Hartford Courant online down here and I also saw this on CNN today, I am so happy they are keeping the Groton Sub Base open!!

Congrats!! :cool1:

Wonderful! We at TACOM were lucky...we weren't even considered this time.

Congrats on Groton! I have to admit I was jealous and very concerned about Portsmouth when I heard Groton got off the list. I am so thankful that the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where my husband has been employed for 18 years is also off the list. My heart goes out to all those whose installations are slated for closure or realignment.

Fort Monroe wasn't lucky either :( , but it was used for mostly administration, I think, with not as many people as other places.

Congratulations!

I live in Hampton, VA and I'm very sad about Fort Monroe. I mean, I knew it had more or less outlived it's usefulness and it is a small base, and most of the folks who work there will still be in the area (at Fort Eustis)...but I, for one, loved having it's "presence" here.

Of course, we still have other bases and stuff...but it is definitely the end of an era for me.

I'm not even going to go into the whole Oceana ordeal! UGH!

I live in Maine, My DH works at Portsmouth Navel Ship yard What a relief to be taken off the BRAC list. I am very sad for Brunswick Navel Air Station. They were not so lucky.

My mom's eyes got watery when the good news came across that Groton had been saved. When Portsmouth was taken off the list she started crying, and we don't even know anyone that works there. The intense support from the state paid off. It's such good news

Congrats to all of you in Groton!!! Visited the base several years ago when DD's boyfriend was stationed there--I couldn't imagine why they'd want to close a submarine training area. Unfortunately, Fort Monmouth here in New Jersey was not so lucky! :-( While it doesn't affect me personally, I feel so sad for all those families whose lives will be adversely affected by this.

Congrats!! So happy for you and your family :) DH and I live in RI though DH is from CT so this all hits close to home....enjoy your trip to WDW....
