They have begun bulldozing homes-without warning

A friend of mine evacuated with one vehicle to her daughter's town in central LA. Her home was in the hardest hit area-Chalmette & they have gone a few times to sort and try to save some possesions. She was to be given a 5 day warning when the home was to be bulldozed. Her neighbor called to tell her -yesterday-the homes on her street have begun to be torn down-and she got no warning!

That is SO wrong! Hopefully, it was just a terrible oversite and not policy. :badpc:

Has this hit the national news yet? If not, I would be suspect of such a rumor.. Fox and others would be all over this in a heartbeat.. Your friend shouldn't be too upset until she has official verification that this is fact - not fiction..

I haven't seen anything about this on the nola.com boards. They are usually right on top of things. I'm suspect of it also. Could it be that the homes that are being torn down (if they are) are ones where the owner agreed to it?

Some of these structures are so bad that no one can go inside. If my home was a collapsed mass of boards like I've seen in some pictures, I guess I would reluctantly let them begin the tear down process so I could start a new beginning.

Red tape and lawsuits will delay the tearing down of many homes. They need to set a date and start the process. Or New Orleans will look like the SEptember 11th Site (5 years and still no building)

I looked at nola.com also - the best place for New Orleans news. There was nothing there and there was nothing in the TP this week either. I've also heard nothing from family and friends in the area. I'm thinking this is a rumor also.

I did hear on WWL radio that they would like people whose homes came off of the foundations and ended up somewhere else to let the officials know what their intentions are.
They need the homes moved to begin levee repair, etc...but they were giving people the opportunity to let them know what they wanted done. I do think they needed to hear from these folks expeditiously, since they need to begin working on the infrastructure. This was in Plaquemines parish.

Maybe this is what they were referring to?? :confused3

Have not heard of any bulldozings yet on the news....

That site was completely CLEARED by the anniversary date. The site was the location of a crime.

A hurricane is not a crime. Each and every owner is entitled to their home and their insurance company (if applicable) is entitled to document the damage if possible.

Were talking several city blocks versus an entire state (MS) and many parishes of one state (LA) and an entire city.

Cannot be equated.

She knew her house was to be bulldozed-it was the 4 day warning she needed to once again get a few more things out.

At present they live 3 hours away-they have to do all this in a day-the drive there and back and the finding stuff. They have one vehicle and she has a job 45 minutes away that her DH has to drive her to and from 8-5, and then drive to N.O.-so you see her dificulties.

Just returned from Gulfport today and they had sprayed their houses to read "Do not Demo" and their phone numbers. Unreal!
