They can't be serious...

Ordinances like this are in place to prevent homeowners from having 15 differant people board with them. A lot of immagrants (illegal and otherwise) live 15, 20, or even more in a single home.

My town just changed the ordinance slightly to read that unrealted people can live together as long as they exist as some type of "family". In fact people were complaining that it was too vague at that real families could get into trouble, but the city counselman felt that the spirit of the law was easy enough to interpret so it passed.

This is a VERY hot topic here!! Black Jack is a suburb of St. Louis amd I live right across the river from St. Louis. It is ALL over the news. I was quite surprised since this family has a mom, dad, and three children. The problem, they say, is that mom and dad aren't married. It will be very interesting to watch how this case pans out. Mom was on TV this morning and she was devastated.

I think some folks need a good dose of MYOB. :sad2:

While I think that is a stupid law I don't see why the couple in the article just don't get married? They have been together long enough to have three kids what are they waiting for? :confused3

Why should they get married? Until there's a law that requires a valid marriage to have kids, I don't understand your argument.

I can't speak for them, but on the news, they said that they have chosen not to get married and now, with all of this, they don't feel that they should HAVE to get married. They have both said they are committed to each other and do not want to get married.

Sometimes a couple doesn't get married for legal or financial reasons. I know a guy who's been with his partner for eight years. She's got two kids from her deceased husband, and they've got one together. Why not get married? Very simply, her husband was military and died during active duty. If she remarries she loses a ton of benefits. By not remarrying she's able to financially be a SAHM.

I wonder what they would do if that couple purchased a home together with both their names on the deed. I'm just not seeing how any court could deny them peaceful enjoyment of the property they legally own.

The current ordinance prohibits more than three people from living together unless they are related by "blood, marriage or adoption."

Wouldn't having three children together make them related by blood, each are related to the children by blood?

That is just ridiculous.
Here they've set max occupancy codes for rental homes. I don't know if it has really helped the situation with the illegals crowding into homes or not.
I know when it first started, my elderly grandmother miss-understood the law and though she would have to move from her apartment.

This was what I though too. The two adults are not related but the 3 kids are, so only 2 unrelated adults in the home. That seems to be within the ordinance.

I never said that they had to be married to have kids, but if this is going to be such a huge issue with living in the same house, why not? What's it going to hurt? I'm not arguing the point, I just made a statement.

Yes if that is true they should be able to live together. Only 2 people are not related by blood. This case is stupid. But the ordinance is a good thing. Some areas are zoned single family dwellings. You do not want a neighbor renting their house to 10 college kids. We had a case of 3 families living in one house. They were renting & the kids were a nightmare along with the dogs.

Well, that makes sense and since each of them are related to the children than they should have no concerns. I also think if the house's deed is in both names how could they legally force one person out?

I thought I read previously that at least of the children is the mom's from another relationship. If so that is three people not related by blood.

It's principle at this point. If a local government can strong arm people into getting married, what else can they do?

:sad2: I think some people have too much time on there hands. If these people are happy, not causing any hardship to anyone else, and are not doing anything wrong besides living as an unmarried couple, then what is the big deal. There are alot worse things in this world that people should be concerned about other than who is or isn't married in a household. That is ridiculous. I'd be a little more concerned with a pedophile living next door to me than the "unmarried" couple.

In Canada,we have a category called common law which essentially gives you similar rights to a married couple. They are some stipulation of course. Do you not have such a thing in the US?

Only in some states. Marriage is regulated by the states, not the federal government. They may live in a state that doesn't allow for common law marriage.
