As I am teaching this morning I can hear my cell phone ringing like crazy from the coat closet. I really didn't think too much of it because I know that if there is anything important going on whoever needs me can call the main office.

So 15 minutes later my director comes in saying "Your sister called, she had to pick up your girls from school" (school and daycare are in the same building). So I go get my cell and listen to my messages and the first one starts out with "Jennifer, this is the school calling there has been a fire and we have evacuated the building." :scared1: It goes on to say that they are closing and I need to pick up the girls. I guess I didn't get back to them fast enough so they called my sister who is the emergency contact and she went to get them. Talk about scared.

My oldest dd is a mess. Her biggest fear is a fire. Everyday we talk about our plan in case of a fire, she always needs that reassurance. She has been attached to me since we got home. I hope that she gets over this. I have been trying to spin it so that she would feel empowered by it. That, yes, there was a fire, but that she knew what to do and that everyone is safe.

What a scary day.

Oh wow. I'm so glad they're ok. We all remember those fire drills at school that just seemed so pointless. Now that I have kids, they no longer seem that way.

Glad the girls are ok ( and it sounds like everyone at the school is too)

Very scary...

This happened in NJ? I did not have the TV on...was it a big enough fire to make the news? Will the school be closed for any length of time?

Had that happen once when I was in about third grade I think. I remember I was petrified! Your poor daughter, to already have a fear and have it come true. Hugs to you, glad everyone is okay.

I don't think it will make the news. It was apparently a small fire but there were flames and it filled the school with smoke. My BIL is a vol. firefighter and he said that it appears that maintenance turned the heat on for the first time without having it inspected (I guess by law it has to be :confused3 ) and when it started heating up it caught on fire.

that is awful!! :grouphug: to your girls...

How scary for your daughter.

Last year there was some sort of malfunction with the furnace and it filled the school with smoke. The building was evacuated. They were let back into the building after the smoke cleared and CO tests were run.

While the kids were all standing outside in the cold when DH drove by and saw the commotion. He stopped and talked to the girls and offered them his coat and sweatshirt. The kids said it was neat to see the firefighters. But I wonder how they would have felt if Dad wasn't there.

I have the same fear of fire that your daughter has...I've had it since I was a child...so I can understand how scared she must be. Please give her big hugs for me. I'm very glad to hear that they are safe, though.

:grouphug:

That is scary stuff. We had a fire in our home a couple of years ago..dd was 10 and she still hates to see or hear a fire truck. (so do I!)

Hugs to you and your daughter!

Glad the kids are ok :)

I had something like that happen, I dumped a Pre-School over it. I was working full time and had a 3 year old in an all day Preschool.

It was afterwork and I was driving over there to pick him up and my cell phone starts ringing. It was DH and he was like "Are you Listening to the radio! They're reporting a fire at the School."

so I was totally freaked out - got there real quick. The parking lot was filled with parents pulling up and running around. The building was closed up with a note on the door "Your Children are at ____________ ." The fire happened in the morning. They moved to kids to a building across town AND DIDN'T EVEN CALL ANY OF THE PARENTS!

We were out of there the next week, I was so pissed. I always wondered how many of the other parents left with us.

Anyway, that one was a small insulation fire in the attic, but the smoke damage was the worst.

Oh my gosh!!! I would have been out of there too.

My girls school handled it very well. The kids were only outside for a few minutes then taken across the street to the fire hall to wait for their parents. The fire alarm went off around 10:30 am and I got a call from the school at 11. It is so cold here today that I was really releived that they got them back inside quickly. (My youngest is only 1 and had a sinus infection) Plus to get organized and place the calls so fast, I was impressed but that. Now I'm not so impressed with the idea that the fire happened because someone wasn't doing their job properly. I will be calling the school for more details on Monday, but for now I'm just happy that everyone is safe and sound.

Glad to hear everyone is safe. It can be very tramatic for little ones. Stay safe. Maine :firefight
