Theft at hotel

You know they have an app for that! Actually its a feature called "Find my iPad" or "Find my iPhone". You can pull it up from any web connected computer and see exactly where it is. Also you can make the iPad make a beacon like sound for 2 minutes and display a message like "give me back my iPad u fool". Also you can remotely wipe all the data from the iPad as well...

That's fun. :) I mean, not fun if you have to use it, but fun that they created it!

Glad it "reappeared" OP. I have stayed there before. One of the reasons I like Desert Inn is the availability of HUGE lockers. We were able to fit 3 carryons and a duffel bag easily in one locker. The locker rental only cost 75 cents!

That's really interesting! Makes it even more surprising and suspicious that the employee didn't point them in that direction...

I brought my phone (not iphone, windows phone) to the parks. It helped when my family split up for rides to find each other. I just brought a zip lock baggie to put it in for water rides. Wasn't a problem!

Yep, baggies are helpful!

Yeah we carry empty normal sized shopping bags with us for rides like the "Grizzly River Run". Good to put a video camera, regular cameras, phones, and jackets in. There were a few times where we shared a raft with 2 other people who were worried, and they were thankful we had backup for them too. Plastic bags take up no room what so ever.

We use the free lockers for GRR! They are most excellent. :) Though it's a nice idea to have a pocketful of baggies to help other people out who don't know about the lockers. :)

Are those "in-room safes" really any good? Doesn't the maid and/or hotel managment have additional keys for the safes? Also, aren't all the keys the same, in every room? I mean, do you really think a hotel with 150 rooms, each with it's own safe, has 150 different safe-keys?

It's not a key- I believe you enter a 4 digit code.

Im so sorry that this happened to you but so glad that you got your stuff back. I ALWAYS leave my DND on the door. I dont trust anyone plus we take alot with us in the park or put the bigger electronics in our car.

I had a cast member give me a mini Disneyland bag to put my phone in when I pulled my brand new iPhone from my bagallini last trip and it had a little bit of water on it after going on Splash Mountain.

It's also kind of hard to not bring expensive things like laptops or iPad's when you need to empty your camera nightly. I have to bring my laptop every trip for this reason since my usual 8 day trip ends up between 1,000 to 1,500 photos

I had a laptop stolen out of my car and learned an important lesson.....my insurance and/or credit card would have covered the theft if it had been stolen from my hotel room. But it was not covered because I had left it in my car and this is considered easy access. I'm sure that insurance companies differ, but I'll leave my laptop in the room from now on.

Excuse my ignorance, but is this something that you could contact the Better Business Bureau about? It's defintely a good idea to post it here, as so many people read the boards and utilize info from others. Talking to the BBB may help too (if that's what they even do, lol.)

Another option might be to purchase a few extra memory cards...that's what I've always done for trips (this will be my first trip actually owning a laptop...but I'm thinking I'll probably leave it at home, especially since I'm staying at the OP's problematic hotel. :scared1:) I have a 2 GB card, a 4 GB card and an 8 GB card. So, theoretically, I should have plenty of space. I guess it all depends on your camera's MP, though.

I'm so mad. We are at dessert inn abd we checked our bags this morning behind the desk. Well our iPad was stolen. We have to wait to review the tapes in the morning. Anaheim pd had a report and will come out in the morning. I've never stayed off site. I'm a Dvc member but stayed off site for cheer nationals to stay with our team. I can't believe this happened. The guy was way to inquisitive. Ughhhh so not ok.

We flew so no car to leave stuff in. I almost asked out friends if we could put in there car. But figured it was safer in hotel office. I'm up to deal with this while everyone else sleeps. Today is nationals and the girls need rest.

They also charged my cc when he said he wasn't charging it until check out. I'm canceling that card as I don't feel my info is safe. We decided lady night we are leaving do not disturb sign up when gone n leaving valuables in safe or our friends car.

This is. Not my Disney bubble!!!

Update.. I called the front desk this morning to ask when the supervisor would be in to review tapes with the pd. Amazingly we just got a call that the guy who checked us in found it on the bench. Ummm last night they called him and hr said he put the bags away immediately and now all of a sudden it was found n put in his safe. Ummm really. You really think I'm going to believe that. Because if it was true he would have told the manager last night when he was called. Off to go get it.

It's back. We already had everything cancelled last night. My step brother used it a lot. It's my step moms. So went to office. The new story was that housekeeping found it. This is after being told the guy who checked us inbound it and it was in the safe all day The manager said no one ever called him to ask if he found it. Ummmmm right. He said people blame them all the time and have the police out here. I'm glad it's back. But they are all lying.

I also told them who our friends/witness were. Well last night they got back from park and none of their Keyes worked. Not a coincidence

When I get home I will post on trip advisor. We had a great lunch at house of blues and my dd competes this afternoon.

We have a Disney cruise next week. I am totally rethinking what I am taking. Since non Disney people wil be loading the boat. We brouhht the iPad for the plane and my dd to use. I have an iPhone Never thought of someone in the hotel taking our stuff

The story is somewhat unclear. You checked in your bags with the front desk and then the iPad was removed from your bags after you returned? Or was the iPad loose, a separate item? What do you mean "the guy was way to inquisitive"? How did you discover it was stolen? Could it have been misplaced? Could what the hotel people be telling you be true and maybe you over-reacted? What did the police say? I'd suggest reviewing what you've written and clean it up before you post on TripAdvisor.

When I get home I'll rewrite it. I'm using my iPhone. It was put into our suitcase prior to checking the bags in. It was removed when tye bags were checked. No we didn't over react. The hotel staff told us different stories each time. I'll post more details later.

And my dd team got 2nd outa 7 teams in the youngest age group!

We flew so no car to leave stuff in.

We generally use the room safe for valuable items, if there is one - otherwise we always make sure we have luggage locks. We make sure everything is in suitcases and that we lock the suitcases up before leaving the hotel each morning.

If you are asking about my post...
On the cruise ship it's a combination that you set yourself every time you open and close the safe.

Just out of curiosity - did you have the tracking software installed on your iPad - When I purchased my iPad, I also bought MobileMe software add on. Within MobileMe, it has a program called find my iPad. I have used this a few time to find our iPad when our son had misplaced it at a friends house.

This was a great addition to the iPad. It have also used it to see where it was. Did you have that software installed when it went missing?

This is a great thread for those who bring electronic items so they can be aware of the problems that can sometimes arise when traveling.

we are home.. I am working on a hotel report...and will post it here and trip advisor.. I am not the only one in our group who had issues and another family had something taken from their room..and magically reappear.. ok..off to write

and no..there was no tracking software installed on the iPad.. it does now.. I really thought our stuff was safe when it was checked into a secure area in the hotel..

I will add more if I recall.. I am beat..but wanted to get it out

Hotel Review on Anaheim Desert Inn & Suites

Dates of stay.. March4-7, 2011.

We arrived at 7:30am Friday morning to the Desert Inn & Suites. Exhausted from almost no sleep the night prior, we flew into Long Beach, easy flight from Oakland.

The office was a bit busy with people arriving and people checking out. I checked us in and informed them that our other party would arrive in about 2hrs. We had planed to check our bags at the desk, as we always do at Disney (let me add..we are DVC members and always stay at the Grand and decided to stay off-site to stay with my dd’s cheer team for nationals). The man said it was fine to check in our bags that did not fit in the lockers. He kept looking behind me at my step-mom and dd; I assumed it was because he was trying to figure out if bags would fit in the lockers. Later I find out he was watching what they were doing. I was going over room stuff with him, while my Step-mom and dd were putting on park shoes and making bags lighter to take into park. This is when the iPad was placed into her suitcase, she had not heard the conversation about lockers, and assumed it was safer to leave in the suitcase in the office than to carry around the park. I almost put my camera bag in my suitcase, but decided to get a locker because I didn’t want to rearrange all my stuff. So I fill out the luggage tag, change my shoes and take the 3 bags to the door to the office, the man walks over and gets them while we were there. We checked to make sure we didn’t leave anything behind and went to the lockers and put a lot of stuff in there.

Fast forward to 3:30pm.. We arrive back at the hotel to get our room key. We get the key and our bags; empty our locker and head to our room. We all pass out; we don’t even open our bags. I did notice that one of my outer zippers was open, but I knew I had nothing in those pockets and ignored it.

At 6:15 we are getting ready to go to dinner and WOC, when the girls wanted to play angry birds. My SM went to get it and could not find it. She tore her bag apart and then we tore ours apart, it was gone. We spent over 20min looking for it, even under the beds. Both DD and SM remember clearly putting it into the bag. She had a spot she put it in. So after pondering and searching, I had a gut feeling the staff had it. I had a flashback of reading some reviews on Disboards about people’s stuff disappearing out of their rooms. But I was like no way, this is not happening.

I called the front desk around 6:40. I asked if an iPad had been turned in. They said no. I said ok, well we checked our luggage in and it was inside a suitcase and it is gone. The man quizzed me on if the luggage looked like it had been gone through, who checked us in, who else was in the lobby, asked me if my dd took it, crazy questions. I said um no, it was left in the bag that we checked in, at this moment it hit me that the man was watching in detail were the iPad was placed and this is why he was asking so many questions about when we were coming back, etc. I told him the iPad needs to be returned or they will be reimbursing us for it. I asked him if I needed to call the PD, he said well if that is what you need to do. The man was being very very defensive. I said ok then I will call them, again knowing that they had to have it.

I called Anaheim P.D, they were very busy but she said she would call when an officer was on his way. At that time we decided to go visit the office and go to dinner. We checked the lockers again, no iPad and our bags would have fit, we were exhausted and clearly not thinking.

We go into the office and all the men look suspicious. There were 3 of them. The head guy again asked me a bunch of questions. I tell him again how I checked in bags, etc. He said he called the guy who checked us in and he confirmed my story, but no iPad. I notice all the cameras and point out were they cover and confirm that they have cameras in the room that stored the bags as well as the lobby were they were sitting. I said perfect, so we can review the tapes and follow the iPad. The man says yes, but he can’t review the tapes only the supervisor can. So we left, but again said well hopefully someone will turn it in to lost and found. Again, giving them an out, as we just wanted it back. He also asked if we had any witnesses.. I said yes, our friends were in the lobby checking in when we were. They may have seen us with the iPad. He asked for their name/room number. I assumed it was for their in-house report….

The P.D called at the end of dinner, before WOC, I said we weren’t at hotel, she said that is fine I will cancel the call and call when your back. I did not want to ruin the trip for my dd and her friend because of thieves. On the way back to the hotel I called the PD, the dispatcher was very very nice. He said if they can’t pull the tapes they are probably telling the truth and without the tapes we cant do anything. He said it happens a lot, but call in the morning and they will send out an officer to review the tapes. So we get back to the hotel, again feeling creped out..

I was up early on Saturday morning to deal with this. My SM had her ds and ds gf contact their banks and change passwords, since the iPad was used by them also. At 7:30 I call the front desk and tell them who I am and ask when the Supervisor would be in. He said oh at least another 30min. I said ok, I would call back then because Anaheim PD is meeting me to review the tapes with him. I again said well I was hoping it was turned into lost and found over night so I could avoid all this PD stuff. He said ok and hung up.

About 15min later the phone rang.. we all looked at each other like No way. I bet the iPad has been found! I answered the phone; it was a guy saying he had a note left for him from the night before about a missing iPad. And that the guy who checked us in found it on the bench were we were sitting and had it put in the safe. And that it was in the safe the entire time. So we go down and get it. A man comes out from the office and says that his house keeping staff found it in the afternoon on the bench and he put it in the safe. We were dumfounded at the lies. He said we get accused all the time of stuff going missing and families get the PD out here, etc. My SM said well you better fix that you have a problem. He was lying. The staff said they called the supervisor, he said he was never called. He also said he was available when all this started. I’m like um you told me the guy who checked me in found it, and now housekeeping. He had no answer. It was not left on the bench, the staff that was there ALL DAY knew nothing about an iPad being turned in. I was so done and over it. The guys in the office all looked away when we looked in. It was a very uncomfortable position to be in. But having the iPad back was most important to us. This was my Dds competition day. I did not need to deal with lying thieves on top of it all.

On the way back to the room we run into our friends, the same ones who were the
“witness”. She tells us that when they got back to their room last night around 11pm, none of their room keys worked. That is just to odd IMO. She waited almost 40min to get new keys brought to her. She refused to go get them, as her keys had worked earlier. I was like no way, I gave them your name because they said they needed it. I know why now.

We were locking up all of our stuff and had the Do not disturb hanging at all times. Still appalled at what we just went through.

We also found that if you let your kids take a bath, it will leak into the room below you. We found this out yesterday.

I will also add that our friends, the same ones who were locked out of their room, let housekeeping clean their room yesterday for the first time (she is doing a report when they get home as well, so I won’t go into all of her details) but her very nice personal blanket was missing. They went to the office and were told that housekeeping removes all the lines from the beds, she informed them that no, it was not on the bed it was with their personal things. They were told housekeeping did not have it, but they did fold a grey blanket on their bed. Again, it was not on the bed nor was it grey. She told them she would call PD if not returned. And guess what… today it magically appeared. After housekeeping had no idea of any blanket that did not belong.

So this was our awful stay. I will never ever ever stay there again or off-site. All of the employees seemed shady. I am thankful the iPad was returned. I wish I could have watched the videos.

In room safes do not have keys, they have a 4 digit code you enter yourself, it's different for every guest. At least this has been the case when we've stayed in a hotel. :)

I'm glad you have the tracking software now, of course now that you do it probably won't happen again...lol and yes, when you check into a hotel your items should be secure, you shouldn't have to wonder what will be there when you come back at the end of the day.....

What an absolutely horrible experience!! I'm glad you eventually got your iPad back but I agree..I will never stay there based on this experience! I've only had one really bad hotel traveling experience and that taught me a very important lesson..it's better to be safe than sorry!

disneyluvbug,

Thank you for taking the time to post your experience. It will certainly make me more aware of securing our electronic devices when we travel. I'm glad that your Ipod was returned. I wonder just how often this happens!?

Thank you for taking the time to let everyone know the entire story. You are a trooper, I will tell you that!!

This is not very good for that hotel; it previously had quite a lot of DISers staying there, commenting rates were good, it was basic, and a short walk to the parks.

Now I think the comments will be very different from just that.

I am sorry you had to go through all of that, and in the middle of what is supposed to be such a happy time. You rose above all of that and still let the girls have their fun, but even then it is hard to have to go through something like that.

((((HUGS))))

WOW...it's not like it was a shuffle or nano ipod..I mean come on an ipad is huge...obviously you can see it sitting out, even if it slips under a bench!

Glad you got it back!
