I saw the movie tonight with my family and had to come post about it. IT WAS SO GOOD.
We had read the book aloud to my kids when it first came out so we all knew the story. I went in with very high expectations and wasn't disappointed. First of all, it was beautiful. Not a traditional smooth Disney style animation - more like an impressionist painting in some places. It worked so well, there was so much feeling conveyed simply through the imagery and color. The writers and animators did an amazing job of showing instead of telling. It was very similar in feel and style to a Studio Ghibli film, not like most of Dreamworks other animated movies. My husband and I both walked out of the theater thinking that it will not only win best-animated film next year but will probably also get a best-picture nomination (and it should).
It was also very funny, very clever and very poignant. My husband and I both cried at multiple points (it had UP level feels) and my kids had some tears as well.
I can't recommend it highly enough - go see this movie!
