The Whole "What Are You Celebrating" Thing

Are they actually doing something special for everyone's occasion or just creating a big database? I hear about all the different things people are celebrating, but nothing Disney is doing to make that celebration more special.

When I made our reservations, the woman on the phone said we would get some pixie dust. That's all I know. pixiedust:

We "celebrated" while we were there in May/June. Every CM we came in contact with congratulated us, and the CM at the front desk of POP gave us a celebration "card" and celebration pins. I think we also recieved an offer of discount for photo pass, which we didn't do. LOL After the first day or two we started leaving our pins in the room. :) We started to feel kinda silly, even though we were very much celebrating.

But, no. There wasn't a huge WOW moment for us in relation to the celebration. It was a neat thing, just the same.

Hopefully they are actually using that info to make people's visits magical! :wizard:

I know I have recently received pop up questions on the Disney web site when costing out different resorts. My initial thought was that it's simply marketing data they're capturing for their review. I have responded each time though because I keep hoping it may result in a future pin/discount code!!:mickeyjum

The interesting thing is that the 'first visit' option I keep choosing (b/c my son's 1st visit) has appeared in varying places in their drop down menu...makes me think they really want to know for marketing purposes etc.

We are hopeful too! I keep putting 1st visit in everywhere I can. :cool1:
But already got a big ole dose of pixie dust...the upgrade to OKW!!!:dance3::cheer2:

But the pins will be nice!

:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:

I'm not sure this is any different than what they did in the past. Over the years, we've gone for various celebrations.. and we've gotten cards / pins / cakes / crowns/ placemats etc. etc...from the CM's, that was all prior to the what will you celebrate theme started. Now they made it this year's theme. I don't know if it will be anything more than what they've always done. But it's still fun... especially for the kids.

I got a birthday card from Mickey slipped under the door at the hotel. There was some kind of photopass card with it, but I had already pre-ordered the CD so I didn't even look at it. I didn't wear my birthday pin, but DD#2 mentioned to our waiter at Donald's breakfast that it was my birthday and he brought me a cupcake. The card and the cupcake are things that have happened on previous visits, so I don't think it was special for this year.

When I made reservations for our character breakfast, they asked if we were celebrating anything. I told them our anniversery. Nothing was said at check-in or by the wait staff. But they did send the chef out to talk to my DH about his gluten free choices. And that really made an impression.

We're traveling in November with my parents and my sister and BIL. We noted on our dining ressies that we are celebrating my parent's 35th wedding anniversary. I hope they do something special for them at least once because they really deserve it :) My sister and I are both pregnant as well and due a week apart so we have lots to be thankful for this year :)

We were there in late August, and I have to say, the celebration thing got us.... a ribbon and some Mickey mouse confetti on the table on my birthday. Wait, and a birthday card signed by Pooh and friends (we were at CP for my bday), and a signed card from Mickey at check-in. No cupcakes, a few birthday wishes (to be fair, I only wore the button for a few days, as it kept falling off and I started to feel a little silly!) I added my birthday and my son's first visit to all our ADRs. We were also having a family reunion, so our whole group wore those buttons, and DS had a First Visit Button. We had a wonderful visit, but honestly, other then a few cute buttons as souvenirs, the promotion wasn't that profound, given all the hype of adding celebrations to your reservations.
WAIT! The birthday gift card ROCKED! Thanks for the birthday gift, Disney!!!! :yay:

Maybe I'm the odd man out, but I think this years promotion is really sweet; it is about those little "magic moments" and "pixie dust" not about dollar value. And I like their point that the "big" thing is the free admission on your birthday, because that's an event we all celebrate within a given year. Maybe not as spectacular as the whole "year of a million dreams" but still magical, albeit in a quieter way. It actually makes me a little sad that for so many of us (not talking about any one in particular), the trip isn't magic anymore, or is somehow ruined, without the extras and perks.

well I'll let you know what happens after my trip. I am celebrating that my DD will still hang out wiht me and talk to me normally. I don't know what they'll do for that but we'll see !!

Just to be clear, I wasn't disappointed at all. I never expect any more at Disney than what I actually paid for, so the little extra touches like a card or a cupcake are appreciated. My only point is that they do that every year, so my experience was that this year wasn't different than other years.

well, the parade is different, the theming around the resort is different, and the free ticket/gift card on your birthday is different.

Just thought I'd update since we got back Saturday. My celebration was my son's adoption. It was on my reservation. We got nothing. NOTHING. No pixie dust, no button (and they have generic "I'm Celebrating" buttons), no card, nothing. I was pretty disappointed. In my opinion, an adoption is a big celebration and Disney just ignored it since it didn't fall into their standard birthday, anniversary, etc. set of things to celebrate.

Poo on you Disney!

Do the things you are celebrating have to take place "DURING" your vacation?

DH and I are taking this trip to celebrate our 5th Anniversary starting this weekend, but our real anniversary was 9/12.

We are going in Nov and are taking one night to celebrate our anniversary (the kids will be w/ KNO). I didnt put it on our reservation because it is later than our actual anniversary, but since he wasnt here for it this year. Ours was 7/11.
