My last trip to the world was in 1995 and my family still refers to it as the "cursed" trip. It all started out as a normal family vacation....but then we entered the Twilight Zone Trip of Terror.....
We left our small town in Iowa in our trust old van. The cast was my dad, mom, ds 17, me 14, and db 10. We made it down into the southern states, the sweltering heat of the July sun beaming down when our air conditioner poops out. Complaining, hot and tired we keep going, knowing we were on the way to the happiest place on earth. But, even that didn't help when our power windows broke. We were boiling so my dad prys the driver side window down, using his "angy" words. Well, we were off again with the one window open, still hot but manageable. Oh, and did I mention that my dad had a broken wrist from an accident in Tae Kwon Do class a few days before. Well, we made it to Georgia and found out a hurricane was hitting Florida as we watched the tv in the hotel room. We had to wait it out. Luckily it passed rather quickly and we were able to pick up on our trip, but then the rain started. And yes, the window was stuck down now. You know those clear plastic ponchos come in handy for other things too. Thank goodness dear mom kept those from our last trip. Anything to save a dime. Well, we made it to Florida and the trip was amazing. :beach: Well, my dad didn't so much enjoy Typhoon Lagoon with a cast, but he kept his spirits up. :cool2: And Alien Encounter did leave my brother and my sister (yes, 17!) in tears, but it was still good. :scared1: And then, we started home. About two hours into our drive home, we heard a loud pop from the bottom of our van. A car whized past us, it's passenger yelling "You're on FIRE, You're on Fire!". :furious: Sure enough, underneath our van was a blaze of smoke and flames. My dad being the quick thinker he is, drove us into a GAS STATION! Well, I've never seen any gas station clerks work as quickly as these ones did! Us kids were flinging out our souvenirs as our mom was grabbing for us to get away from that van! So, the fire was put out and our van towed. Well, my dear sister just had to be home for a required all state music camp in two days. Our van would not be finished for 4! So, dad rented a car, drove us back to Iowa, turned around and drove back to Florida to get our van and then turned around and came home. AHHHH, memories! :rotfl2:

I dont know wether to laugh at the incident or cry because it actually happened to someone. I am so glad we fly.

I can laugh about it now. :lmao: But at the time, we definitely weren't laughing!! My husband is still not sure about taking me to disney, with my family's bad luck! :rotfl:

Wow! That was quite a trip. Hope everything goes smoothly for your next trip! We are also from Iowa, and we are driving down this summer. I know everyone thinks we're crazy, but I don't like to fly. We have driven down several times before, but we've never had that much excitement. Thankfully!

Are you planning on flying in '08?

Yep, definitely flying next trip! My dh would never agree to go if we didn't. What part of Iowa? Much flooding where you are? :umbrella:

National Lampoons Vacation, when they drive to Wally World is what came to mind as I read your story. I was yelling "oh no, while laughing through my tears. Sorry it happened and I'm really sorry that I find it so funny, but seriously, I'm sure you laugh at it too now?

We are from eastern Iowa, and so far it hasn't been too bad. Do you have a direct flight to Orlando from where you are?

HI

Where in Iowa are you? We are in Des Moines! I don't see many Dissers from Iowa so it is nice to see you here...

In 1995 I was graduating from HS. We also drove to FL with my mom, dad, brother, and two friends!

Good times for sure but FLYING is soooo much better! I drove in March of this year and it was LONG!!! LONG AND LONG!!

I don't remember it being so long when my dad would drive!!! :confused3 :rotfl:

Sounds like my family when I was growing up.

My dad loved to borrow other people's things, and it always ended up costing us double the money, cause we had to fix what we broke.

We went out West-to South Dakota and our borrowed tent ripped iwhile there was a huge thunderstorm in Wyoming. It took 2 days to get home and we had to stay in hotels with swimming pools. What every kid wants anyway-when will parents learn.

We borrowed a RV my senior year in highschool and we went out East. We made it to NJ and Boston but we started for Vermont and the RV blew a seal and we were smoking away going over a bridge and we ended up staying at a hotel waiting for it to get fixed. Found out 3 days later, it couldn't be fixed and we had to fly home. We had to pack our clothes in hefty bags since we had no suitcases. That flight home had to cost a ton of money for my parents too.

Little ol' Jefferson. Not to far from you, really! :wave2: I am so happy to be flying this time. My husband has not flown on a large plane before, and he said there was no way he would go at all if we had to drive.

The last time I flew to Florida I was still in diapers. It was back in the 80's and my mommy was in her super stylin' new jean jumpsuit. Needless to say, my diaper wasn't on so tight and it leaked all over her in the beginning of the flight. Jean material doesn't dry too fast either, so she was soakedthe rest of the way there. :lmao:

Like DisneyAddicted mentioned, you must have come from a Griswold National Lampoon family, too! :thumbsup2 I always knew growing up, if something was going to go wrong...it was going to happen to my family! It makes for some good stories now at least. :rolleyes1
