My WDW Commando Trip Report is linked in my signature.

We had already done Sea World for a couple of days (see the Sea World Board) and I knew that ending my vacation at Universal was the way to go. When staying on site, the relaxing aspect of having the Unlimited Express Pass required only a little planning.

This is the end of my three part trip report...on three different Forums...with entirely different focuses.

Trip Report One...A Commando Does WDW...focus on planning effectiveness

Trip Report Two...Sea World...focus on a new experience completely

Trip Report Three...US/IOA...focus on Diagon Alley, new hotel (Portofino) and what limited planning can accomplish here.

Im in!

After many many Disney trips, Im planning our firtst Universal trip so we can check out Harry Potter World...

Very interested! We're 22 days away from our first Universal-only trip. We've only been once before, and that was for just one day a few years ago.

Thank you for your patience. I am a tax accountant and am now getting busier. I am also remodeling my lake house on weekends...ripped out carpet last weekend...

I hope to have day one up tomorrow evening.

Universal Day One…

The joys of the minimal plan….

Yup, Universal was not obsessively planned except for our hotel and our Orlando Flex Pass Plus which we had already used for a day at Busch Gardens and two entries to Sea World. Oh, and I had to go to HHN with Express…this was mandatory for DBF to even agree to go to Orlando.

We did not have a package at Universal because of the tickets we selected. We had a hotel reservation at Portofino Bay. Now I have travelled a lot. I would say my Condo in the Caribbean is number one. Our hotel in Florence Italy is number two ( 4 star European Hotel I won a trip (see photo)) and the Portofino Bay Resort at Universal is next. Wow! I am glad I spent the extra $ per night to be here.

My place in Belize…
View from the balcony:

DBF in the sitting room of our suite at Plaza Luccecci in Florence: (I think that’s how it is spelled)

Portofino Bay Hotel in Orlando Florida:

We left the Hilton Garden Inn in the morning after having breakfast at the hotel. ($12 all you can eat buffet) and used the town car service conveniently parked outside. I don’t remember the cost but it was reasonable. We arrived at Portofino by 11:30 AM. Our room wasn’t ready (check in is 4PM) so we left our luggage with bag services, used the machines to get our Express Passes and toured the resort for a little while. We had a drink at the “Thirsty Fish” and wandered around checking out the amenities. We were tired from lots of park touring and enjoyed the laid back feel of just discovering Portofino. We were impressed with the authentic Italian touches. I enjoyed our stay at the Beach Club resort several years ago and the theming was appropriate. The fact that the resort shares space with the Yacht Club, Boardwalk, Swan and Dolphin makes it so much less immersive than the Universal resorts. You can’t see the other resorts from here and you can’t see the parks but it’s still close. The landscaping is very effective.

When we received our text that our room was ready, we moved in and decided to check out the parks.

Ahhh…where to go…DBF and I decided we needed a Roller Coaster fix after so many Disney days so we headed to IOA. After a little Hulk, Dragon Challenge and Forbidden Journey, we discovered a new favorite, Happy Hour at the Backwater Bar. Cheap but good beer, friendly bartenders and something I had never seen in a theme park…regular customers.
We were so overloaded with rich food from our Disney experience that we headed to City Walk for a basic taco or something. We found it in the food court area. Then we grabbed a frozen concoction from that daiquiri quick service place near the dock. We then boarded a boat back to Portofino…we were doing some serious Harry Potter stuff the next day.

I did purchase the photo package prior to arriving (before the price increase). I need to make those available for this report tomorrow.:)

Universal Studios morning…

I was beside myself with excitement to see Diagon Alley. We decided to make use of our early entry and head there in the morning with IOA in the afternoon. When we arrived, we were happy to see that a Wednesday morning in October was completely doable. DBF was surprised and pleased that I actually knew how to get into Diagon Alley. It pays to do research. I would have loved to pause for a photo with the Knight Bus driver but there were so many people vying for his attention, I justed snapped a picture or two...most of which were overexposed for some reason.

We made our way to the “Alley” and I was immediately awestruck. The feeling of authenticity was overwhelming. As we walked in, I could “hear” that the dragon atop Gringotts was ready to breathe fire and got my camera ready. DBF was wowed. I was glad I got the photo.

We headed straight to Gringotts which had a posted wait time of 35 minutes (more like 20). The ride worked perfectly and the lobby, elevator effect and caverns were very well done. The ride seemed to end a bit abruptly but we enjoyed it a lot. We still prefer Forbidden Journey however. I was so busy taking in all the theming and the line moved so quickly I didn't get any photos inside!

After our ride, we walked around the area a bit, taking pictures and just soaking in the atmosphere. Knockturn Alley was our favorite. It was virtually empty when we went in. It was creepy in a fun sort of way. I will not give away the effects.

I could have spent a bunch of money for Halloween home decor in this place..

It was now time to queue up for our journey to Scotland/IOA on the Hogwarts Express. Our tickets/park passes were checked by a friendly TM and we were in line. The posted wait time was 25 minutes (more like 20). Kings Cross station is very well themed especially platform 9 ¾ . Looking around at the little touches made the wait time very easy to manage. For some reason, I didn’t take many pictures. In fact, I couldn’t find one that was postable.

Once back at Hogwarts, we rode Forbidden Journey again, rode Dragon Challenge again and made our way through the Suess area because I like to take pictures there.

Continued next Post...

Somewhere in here, we stopped to grab a random sandwich (I can’t even remember where), we were on our way to Super Hero Island. Our mission, ride Hulk, Spidey and Dr. Doom for the second timeAfter a stop to each. Since the photo card is only good for 3 days, this was the day we activated it. Now we could get official pictures of our rides.

We also rode Jurassic Park and decided not to do the water rides this trip. I did have a daily schedule for our US/IOA days but felt no need to follow it.

We checked out Happy Hour at the Backwater Bar before heading back to Portofino before sundown. (this is in front of the bar on the water)...yes it is the smoking section and it is empty.

We wanted to hear the opera singers serenade us from the balcony above the piazza while sipping wine. Just a little throwback to our Italy trip. It was really cool. We grabbed some wine from the Thirsty Fish on the Piazza and carried them to an outdoor table. The ambiance was incredible!

For dinner, we opted to do quick service at Sal’s Market Deli. They have pizzas, hot sandwiches, pastas, salads, wine by the bottle or glass and lots of snack items. We split a hot meatball sandwich, grabbed two salads and a bottle of wine. It was very good and just the right amount of food.

We made it an early night as park touring was starting to get tiring and the next day we had to stay up late for Halloween Horror Nights.

The pictures look wonderful, especially Diagon Alley. We have our first Universal-only trip in five days, so I love reading all the details!

Thanks Melly, I have a lot more photos of Diagon Alley taken later in the trip. I went back one afternoon just for photos. I have done a US/IOA trip before, stayed at the Hard Rock. You will have a great time.

Love your pictures......DA is certainly a place to be wowed!!

Waiting for more :thumbsup2

Thanks Schumigirl...It is tax season so I hope to do an update tomorrow night or tuesday. I work every Saturday until April 15 but get Tuesday off.
