I got the vet bill in yesterday's mail, for putting my cat to sleep last week (she had cancer). Granted, it wasn't a big bill...only $30 for the x-ray, $20 for the euthenasia and $15 for cremation, but still....couldn't they have waited until AFTER Christmas to send it to me?! :(

I know it's so hard Chatty. :(

When I put my cat down, I had to pay the bill before I walked out the door!

To top it off, a few days later, I got a "welcome to our office and we look forward to serving you in the years to come" card!!!

I wonder who got the sympathy card!

I'm so sorry you had to get the bill right at Christmas like this.

A few weeks ago, I had to take my MIL's dog in to have her put to sleep and they wanted me to pay and sign a permission slip while I was still holding the live critter!! BOY!!! That was really an odd thing to do!

Afterwards I realized what a good idea it had been because all I could do was walk quickly OUT of the office.......too many tears in my eyes to have been able to stop to fill out their silly paperwork! LOL

Extra *hugs* for you today.

I am so sorry for your loss and for the poor timing of the bill. It's too bad they didn't wait until after the holidays. I've always been touched by the sympathy cards our vet has sent to us after we've lost a pet.

I'm so sorry. My parents have the most wonderful vet in Austin. When we had to put our beloved Copper Ann down they cried with us, allowed us to leave out the back door, and didn't charge us a dime.

I bet your fubaby knew how much she was loved. (((HUGS)))

Aw, sorry to hear about your loss, Chattyaholic. I guess they weren't thinking about the timing of mailing the bill, the staff probably just usually waits a few days and then sends it.:(

When my Persian was put to sleep, I got a sympathy card from the vet and the bill arrived a few days later.

When we put our cat to sleep this summer, we had to pay before they did the "procedure". They did consider our feelings by taking us into the exam room and doing the paperwork there rather than in the middle of the waiting room. We also had to sign papers saying she had not bit anyone in the last 10 days (rabies). They also let us out through a back door rather than through the waiting room. We got a sympathy card too.

Your bill was alot less than ours! We paid over $100 for the office fee and the cremation (with ashes returned). I always thought this vet was expensive but I think they all are in a city. If we get a new cat, I think we will go to another vet, I couldn't bear to go to that office again with the memories. Plus I would rather go to a 24 hour vet, this vet left the sick animals alone at night (11:00pm to 8:00am).

Take care.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I just wanted to say that every Vet we've ever gone to has required payment at the time services were rendered. We had to have our dog put to sleep over 12 years ago - and we paid the bill at that time.

I'm sorry.:( I had to pay my bill up front as well. I'm so glad I did because I would have been heartbroken, just as you are, to have that bill come to my house.

My cousin's vet sent her a reminder for her dog's shots 2 months after they put her down. That was so insensitive.

I'm sorry Chatty. :( To have this happen this time of year is hard enough without them sending the bill right before Christmas.

I had to have my bunny put to sleep and they also sent me the bill in the mail. They didn't let me leave out the back door though. But they did send me a sympathy card. When I was growing up we had to put our two cats down, then the vet also sent reminder cards for boosters. I was so mad. I intercepted them before my mom saw them (she would have totally broken down) and called the vet and told them. Why don't some vets keep better track of this stuff?

Chatty, I hope your memories of your precious furbaby will bring you some comfort in the next few days.

(((HUGS)))

 When our P.W. the Dachshund had to be put down, we got the bill about a Month after he died. :( We got the Sympathy card first. This was the second Animal of ours to have died in about a Month, my cat Gizmo was first.:( So, needless to say, when DH took the 2 puppies last week for general Maintenance we were NOT charged AND got a free bag of food.:D

Chatty,
I'm sorry that happened to you. I work for a vet, and we always wait a week before sending the bill. We sent the sympathy card first.
There are some clients that want to pay that day, and some that want a bill. We let them decide which is best for them.

I think the hardest part is when they come to pick up their beloved pet's ashes and have to pay a bill.

It is better if it is paid for when it is done.

{Hugs} to you.

Sorry for your loss, but our vet requires payment for services at the time of service. We pay before we leave the office.
