The vet couldn't hear my dog's heart today

Which made *my* heart almost stop beating!

Six weeks ago I had to have my darling beagle sent over the rainbow bridge, and poor 15 yr young Jillie has been missing her couch buddy ever since. She just hasn't seemed herself. The vet pulled out her stethoscope, listened, looked at me, and said that Jill has so much fluid built up that the vet literally couldn't hear her heart. We decided to treat it conservatively, considering her age, so she's on Lasik (Lasix?), and hopefully will be in good enough shape in a few days for the vet to judge the condition of her heart.

I'm supposed to keep her quiet and calm and not allow herself to exert herself in any way until then. Okay!

I wish dogs could live forever (or at least as long as we do)!

Hugs to all the furbabies out there,
Terri

Awww Terri, I know just how you feel. I often wish we could have more time with our furbabies.

I hope Jillie pulls through this and is able to get back to normal. Sending pixie dust and well wishes your way. Please keep us informed. :wizard:

Me, too, but she has had a very good life, so I want the end to be as peaceful for her as possible. We found out about our beagle's cancer on a Tuesday, the vet was able to keep him comfortable so we could take him home and say our good-byes, and she actually came to our house to put him down quietly on his favorite couch, in the afternoon sunshine the next day. When the time comes, I hope for something similar for Jill. (Heck, for myself in another fifty years or so, too!)

Terri

Aren't our furry family members the best. Good thoughts for you and Jillie. I have 2 furbabies of my own and can't imagine going through what you are.

Very sorry - sending prayers and pixie dust!

It's amazing how much pets become part of the family. My dog, Denny, was put to sleep over 2 years ago, and it still feels like there's somebody missing from our house. {{{Hugs}}} for you and your baby.

I had a golden retriever several years ago who was over weight and developed severe congestive heart failure; bluish gums, couldn't walk, etc. all very quickly. The vet put him on lasix and digoxin and he did beautifully for 2 more years, living until he was 14. He passed away from bloat, totally unrelated to his heart. The lasix may get your baby over this hump. Good luck.

Thanks, everyone for the thoughts and Dawn it's amazing how much more time you got with your dog after diagnosis. She slept all day today off and on, and seems not uncomfortable, but very lethargic and just not herself. As long as she's stable and doesn't seem to be in pain, I'm letting her be. Unfortunately, if I leave her sight she gets up and comes looking for me, all fretful, so there's my excuse for not cleaning the house today!

My first cocker had congestive heart failure and was on lasix for quite a while. I remember a doctor friend was at my house for dinner - he made the comment that he would know what to do with a human with congestive heart failure (lasix) but wasn't sure what you would do with an indoor dog.

I told him that yes he was on Lasix and had a dog door so it wasn't a problem. He lived a couple of more years with no problems. Finally he would just bloat up and couldn't eat. I had him drained once but it all came back and then I had to have him put down. But he had some good times for a few years before it got to that stage. I loved him so much.

Good wishes for both Jillie and you too, Terri, hoping she is feeling better real soon. :goodvibes
