The Updated and All-Inclusive Costume Thread

I agree, something modular that you can take apart for luggage and put together on site is ideal. A piece of canvas with a channel for string around the outside could work -- like a tire cover? Then use noodle foam or even something inflatable for the base.

As for a harness, attaching it to a lightweight vest or a basic backpack worn on your torso could work.

Also I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!
Definitely planning something like a tire cover with a drawstring (or elastic) once I get it figure out.

DH suggested something like a sandwich board style setup but I think I only want the target on the front if I can find really inexpensive brown tights and a shirt then my arms/legs/body can be the easel that holds the target 😂

I was thinking you could use straws as arrows. It would be easy to hot glue some feathers (or felt cutouts that look like feathers) to the ends. My mom has a hot glue gun you could use to attach them to the costume the night before. (Ask me how I know.) Or I wonder if you could cut slits for them and tape them from the inside, if you don't want them "permanently" attached?

This wouldn’t quite use the tire cover method…

Could you create a slightly larger pocket on the outside of your canvas circle and slide part of a hula-hoop through it? However, I’m not sure if you could curl up a hula-hoop tight enough without bending it to fit in a carry-on.

Either big straws, or something like Nerf darts?

got my Moana jersey. I already own this skirt that I could wear with it, but I can’t decide if something else (as far as color) would work better.

Debating about how to accessorize it, and how much accessorize it.

There are a lot of colors going on in the jersey itself. It's a coral-to-tan gradiation (most of the tan will be tucked into the skirt), the lettering is a greeny-teal, the heart of te'fiti swirl is more deep green (it looks like they were supposed to match, but the glossier finish on the swirl makes it read as a different shade.)

That skirt looks good, it brings out the color of the manta ray

I agree, this looks great together! Maybe just generic Hawaiian accessories, like a lei or a floral/greenery headband?

option 1 for the archery target (will likely be making a showercap style cover for it with a drawstring or elastic)

These are 28.5in in diameter. Seems like it wouldn't be too hard to use the handles to add shoulder straps or as an attachment point to a backpack or something. They only come in a 2-pack, I only need one, and the kids can use them in the summer when we go to the lake. I'm not sure if this size would get annoying bouncing off my legs while I walk, but I could also just hold it out away from me a little if it did become an issue. I like that these are solid all the way through and a slipcover would be less likely to sag in middle. I feel like a larger target commits to the idea more proportionally, but I also don't want to get into trouble with security.

OR

option 2

These are 21in in diameter. No handles, so I'd have to incorporate how i'm carrying it into the slipcover. Cover may sag in the middle because of the hole. Less likely to interfere with leg-swing. I like that these are a bit more "squared off" like an archery target is.

The difference in cost is about $4 between option 1 and 2.

OR

Option 3 is a really inexpensive kids pool float.

These are usually around 24in. No handles, so I'd have to incorporate how i'm carrying it into the slipcover. Cover may sag in the middle because of the hole. Less likely to interfere with leg-swing. More round in general. Costs about 1/3 of what options 1 or 2 are (although I get more pieces with those options.)

Option 1 seems perfect! I think as long as you're not bonking into people coming in to the corral area, they'll give you a pass. I've definitely seen more cumbersome costumes, especially for the 5K.

My Princess Expo and Half shirts are done! I kept trying to force the blue because I was married to wearing this OG sparkle skirt that was blue and silver and glittery. I finally decided to just use the colors I wanted to use and found other skirts in my collection to match. SO, now here's the expo top and skirt:

And this is for the race (I'll put the bib on my skirt):

Buyer Beware: "Scirbbles" fabric paint in the squeezey tubes from Michales is terrible.

Either I got a bad batch, or this product is awful. I attempted to save money with this less expensive brand, but as soon as I tried to squeeze it out of the tube, it's like paste. Paste that doesn't want to adhere to the fabric, and just sit on top of it like....dried out liquid makeup foundation. So now I'm going to have to make another trip to a different craft store for green at a minimum. The bottle of black tulip fabric paint that I purchased 4 years ago that was still in my cabinet was completely fine.

That sucks. I got these from Amazon for my marathon weekend shirt and they worked ok.
