The Tale of Many Items Lost- Lots of Photos! August 2010 Trip Report

Thanks again for the explanation for your fireworks shots. I'll have to play with that shutter speed thing. Definitely making the effort to bring the tripod will be key, which i plan to do for both Wishes and Illuminations (maybe fantasmic too if it's allowed...). I do not have steady hands haha. i'll have to update you to show how i did (hopefully i get SOME good shots, seriously getting a good Wishes shot is on my Bucket List).

Good luck! I definitely want to see pictures when you get back!

We headed to Hollywoods Studios with the goal of hitting Toy Story Mania first. I’m the fastpass runner so Ken took my tripod and got a locker while I headed to the rope. I have done with Toy Story Dash with tripod in tow but it definitely is less stressful when I don’t have to worry about impailing anyone. It worked well- I was first in line for fastpasses and by the time I was through, the rest of the group had caught up with me and we headed into the ride.

You have posted a couple of times about using lockers. Have you seen the section in my TR about the luggage lockers?

Page 7, and there is even a picture that a friend took on her trip.

"As we exited the bus and headed towards the HS entrance, we passed a small green-colored building. I looked over and noticed that there were luggage lockers at this building, with a rental fee of $1 (4 quarters). Although I don’t often carry around a lot of cash at WDW, and usually no change, I did have a supply of quarters and pennies to use for pressed penny souvenirs. So we stashed our backpack and Ziploc of wet BB clothes in a GINORMOUS* INEXPENSIVE locker. How awesome is this??? Huge locker, we didn’t have anything that needed to be searched at bag check, and it was a huge savings from the $7 plus $5 deposit for a locker inside the park! About the only disadvantage of these lockers are that they are single use. You can’t keep coming back to get stuff, plus it would be inconvenient since it is outside of the park. But it was perfect for our needs.

* FYI: The dimensions are: 23"H x 16"W x 29" Deep. I looked it up.
I have since read that there are similar lockers at EPCOT (front of the park) and at the TTC, but I haven’t confirmed that there are any at Animal Kingdom."

on the ToT park shot. I have not had much success with this one in my few times on this attraction. Were you in hte front row and if so, did you request it?

The shot of burning plane at the IJ shows, with the shadows of Indy and Marion running away is outstanding!!!

And thank you for including my personal vice: FOOD PORN!!! The panini sandwich and the photos of the breakfast berries made me drool!!!

I look forward to your Halloween trip report!

Thanks for the advice. We tend to go back to the locker multiple times during the day and park hop so that might start to add up. I will definitely keep it in mind though. I have to catch up on your trip report. I've been working like crazy on my digital scrapbooking- just finished the August Disney book and then I have to proof 2010 volume 1- hopefully, both will go off to the printer tonight!

Thanks again! For ToT, I was actually in the back row- you can actually see the shadow of the arms of the person in front of me. I was thinking about requesting the front but then just went with what they gave me. I may request the front next time. I'm totally terrified of this ride but my boyfriend (who I am dragging on his first trip ever!) wants to ride it so I'm going to give it another go. To get the shot, I put my camera on burst and any time there was daylight, I shot away. I actually had my eyes closed the entire time!

I love food pictures, too! My family thinks I am strange to do it so I'm glad someone appreciates it! The panini sandwich was awesome. I've actually had that sandwich three times before this but it had never been toasted like that before. So good! Wish I had one now!

Anyway, your photos are amazing!

I just wanted to say, I'm your age and have a family (which I'm so blessed to have and wouldn't change a thing), but I envy how you can go off by yourself and have an adventure with your camera! You have a chance to really see Disney and take in even the smallest details, that I always seem to miss. I guess it's true what they say..."the grass is always greener". I'm so happy for you and that you're taking advantage of this time in your life to do something you want to do!

Now, I must know more about this Mickey Lens Cloth...do you have a pic of it and is it easy to find in the parks? We're headed down next week and you have peaked my interest!

I love love love my Mickey Lens Cloth! I made my brother buy one for his video camera and I also bought a spare (because, if you haven't noticed, I tend to lose things ). Usually, you can find them in a lot of the shops, especially the camera/photopass places. They just said they were out of them at a lot of places when I went but they should be in the Emporium. We eventually found them at the Crow's nest kiosk in Adventureland. I originally bought one in Epcot in May where you rent the lockers. Here's a picture I found online- I think they're about $6 in the park.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words. Part of the reason for me going to Disney so many times this year is that it's part of my plan to embrace the things/opportunities that I do have rather than worry about what I don't have. Not always completely successful but...18 days and counting!

So excited for your upcoming trip- are you bringing a camera?

Sounds like the luggage lockers would not be the best solution for you. They are good for us if we are park hopping and there are only certain things we need at each park. Like when we go to Animal Kingdon/Blizzard Beach/Hollywood Studios in a day, we store our bathing suits until we need them, then our wet clothes while we are in HS.

The latest couple of installments of my TR are kind of a riff on yours: Lost in Hollywood Studios.

I love taking pictures of food! My family now tolerates it and my DH reminds the kids that "Mom needs to take a picture first before you eat"

I am seriously considering titling my next TR (if and when there is one):
"Is it wrong that I have more photos of my meals than of my kids?"

Thanks- better late than never! Actually, you're almost in time for my next report- we leave in 7 days for our October fun!

All the dark ride shots were taken with the Sigma f/1.4. The outdoor shots are probably evenly split between the 24-70 and the 10-22, with the 70-200 thrown in a few times but not much. I'd love to use the 70-200 more but probably won't get to it much on this upcoming trip.

Thanks a lot! Honestly, I don't know a lot about which point and shoot cameras are good but really, 90% of the photos are about the photographer, not the camera. I'd recommend learning the basics of exposure and getting a camera that had some options for manual settings- learn your camera inside and out. Then, I'd mostly focus on learning to compose shots well- look for things that are interesting, minimize distracting items in the pictures, etc. A really good beginner's book on photography is Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson- I definitely recommend checking it out!

6 days and counting! And of course, as is my MO, I lost my Disney Visa last night. Luckily, they are rushing out the replacement card so it will be ready for the trip. And I have stocked up on extra lens caps so this time, if I lose one, I will have a back up with me!

Have a fabulous time on your trip. We are only 3 weeks away ourselves! And... We've got a Canon T2i now! We bought my son's as he has upgraded to a 60D, so we've got some practicing to do!

Just got back last night! Had a great time but it was a little more hectic than I would have preferred. Yes, I did take many pictures but I'm not sure how many keepers I've got- I never quite felt in the zone this trip. That is taken from the TTC. The first night we were there, a Friday night, the plan had been to watch Illuminations. But it was absolutely mobbed with the Food and Wine crowd so we decided instead to see Hallowishes from the TTC. It was a very good choice- what a great show!
