Day Nine 28th August 2007

I fear for today’s trippie….

I have realized why most people, on normal holidays, would not feel compelled to do an in depth journal of their holiday, as you would tend to get this, times fourteen…

Had breakfast

Lay in Sun

Swam

Had some dinner

Went to bed.

And that broadly sums up today really, as it is officially a beach day. However, I shall attempt to embellish and add colour….and if nothing else I took some photos…so I can show you those.

My body clock started ringing at around 8am, and fight it as I may, I could not get back to sleep…the sad result of years of being forced to actually go to work to earn a living. I am destined to win the lottery, of that I am convinced, and it is only a matter of time before I do.

This is why I have no concerns about racking up enormous debt to fund these trips to Orlando, as I shall pay it all off with a couple of day’s interest, made on my enormous win.

That dream recurs for me, which is funny as my other recurring dream also happens to involve me possessing a huge wad. What is even funnier, is that this second recurring dream is shared by Louise!!! Herrumph!

So, dreams of large wads aside, I prise my athletic frame from my pit at around 9am. I alert Channel 9 and the local papers as it appears Louise has found the toaster, and managed to insert bread into it. I am served breakfast as if I were a king…who liked toast.

The coffee…well, I played a more proactive role in that as I had to explain how the machine worked. I’d much rather the rooms had a kettle and jar of instant to be honest.

The girls feast on Froot Loops, and watch the Disney channel for a nice change. Once they have eaten we “lard” them up for the day ahead.

One of the benefits of having girls of this age now is that we don’t need to watch them every second of the day, and we let them go to the pool again, whilst we settle in on the beach.

We explain to the girls how their room cards work if they want to get anything (within reason). They ask me several times for an exact definition of the term “within reason” and I suspect they are searching for some sort of loophole.

One of my steely stares does the trick, and we leave them with their cards, refillable mugs, and a promise that if we don’t see them again we’ll all meet at the airport!!

Within seconds, Louise is prostrate and ready for action. My sense of common decency means I defer the offer, and set off for a walk up the beach instead.

I headed left, or North, up the coast, and took with me the camera, my hat, and a sense of adventure.

Just so you can picture the scene…this is my view looking up the beach as I set off.

I can’t stand these tourist packed beaches.

I make several attempts to photo these birds that can run faster than Eamonn Holmes in a cake shop trolley dash to avoid the waves as they come in. Seems though, that they can also run as quickly to avoid sweaty fools from the UK trying to take their photo.

floridaaug07281.jpg

A little further up the beach, I notice a worryingly large nut like object…a quick check of the shorts, just to be sure…yep, not mine….

floridaaug07282.jpg

and on we go. This was bigger than a coconut and I have no clue how it got there, with there being zero trees on the beach or near it.

I must say that the houses along the beach are a little disappointing to be honest. I thought there would be lots and lots of massive majestic sea front mansions, but most seem to be quite modest, very nice, normal houses.

I spot one house that looks to be within my budget though.

floridaaug07283.jpg

and then, just as I was saying that about the houses being just normal….

floridaaug07284.jpg

an episode of Cribs turns up, where no doubt an unheard of teenage rap star, worth three gatrillion dollars, wearing a pair of pants borrowed from Big Daddy shows me his fridge and say Word a lot.

Bitter, me…never!! :rolleyes2

Not much further up the beach, I stumble across more nut action. With it being dark black, I assume it isn’t anything I need worry about, unless Louise has been playing with the straightening irons during the night…..again.

With the imminent arrival (hopefully) of her ring, I assume I am safe for a day or two, and I pick it up to examine it.

floridaaug07285.jpg

Absolutely none the wiser as to what it is I throw it back into the sea and carry on.

I look back now, but not in anger as to how far I have come…from my days as a lowly bank clerk at the age of seventeen, with no savings and little income, to now a lowly thirtysomething, with no savings, and many outgoings….

I also look back along the beach, from whence I came…just to make sure I can find my way back!!

floridaaug07286.jpg

Now, I see yet more bird action. Tedious, but that is the price you pay when you look like this.

It is there somewhere….

I spot something in the water, miles away. In the time I have been here, very little seems to drift by on the water, so it is worthy of a photo…well I thought so anyway

floridaaug07288.jpg

As it gets a bit closer, and with the help of my super duper zoom on the camera, it turns out to be this..

floridaaug07290.jpg

I’m not really clear what “this” is, but there you go. Make your own minds up.

Having walked a long way….I suddenly stop, turn round and set off back again. The mindless banality of walking is irrefutable!!

I take all the same photos again going back, so if you want to see them just look at the earlier ones in the opposite order.

I’ve been gone a couple of hours or so, and Louise is frantic with worry. So much so, that she even turned over and looked up at one point, in a "desperate" attempt to find me.

The coast guard stands down, and Louise gets up.

Rebecca has wandered down to the beach, and the two of them start the hunt for interesting shells that lasted for the rest of our time at Vero.

floridaaug07289.jpg

I relax for a while, and Louise comes back to her sunbed, after suffering withdrawal symptoms.

She tells me that she has been inundated with crabs, and I wonder just how long I’ve been away…however, it turns out she meant these little chaps.

floridaaug07291.jpg

More expert zoom work there…hence the lack of clarity.

There he is at normal focus

floridaaug07292.jpg

They kept popping up from holes like this all around us.

floridaaug07293.jpg

I spend the next hour or so staring into a dark hole with my camera poised…it took me right back to the birth of the girls!

Look, there he goes.

floridaaug07295.jpg

We wander up to the pool at around 12.30, as we felt we should make sure the girls don’t forget to have lunch. It turns out they ate at 11.15!! So I go in the pool with the girls for a bit.

As we’ve been away for over a week we think we should phone home at this point, so we go into the hotel to use our phonecard we bought yesterday.

What a pain in the harris….we tried every possible combination of numbers going and still could not even get to the point where we could use the phonecard.

We pop to reception, to ask advice. They are pretty clueless, but whilst there we see if any packages have arrived for us. She goes into the back, asking if anyone has seen Mr Williams’ ring….

Worryingly, the guy who rents out the sunbeds puts his hand up, but the confusion is soon ended, when she reappears with a Fed Ex package and all is well. Louise skips around reception for a few minutes, and is generally one happy bunny.

We try the phonecard from our room too, but still no use, so we give up, and just call from the room, explaining to our nearest and dearest that they must talk quickly as we will be deducting the costs of these calls from their present budget. They ended up owing us money I think.

As we head back to the pool, we book a table at Shutters for 7.30. We would have booked at one of the other on site restaurants but there weren’t any.

Louise and I eat lunch now –

Me – Popcorn shrimp and fries
Louise – Chicken Pitta

We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing on the beach. I realise that I really am good at doing nothing, despite years of not being able to practice. I also realise how nice it is not to have to be somewhere, and just lie back and read for hours.

The boogie board took some hammer this afternoon too. I am naturally gifted in this area, as you know, and I’m sure this is how it is supposed to look…

floridaaug07317.jpg

ahem…

and I show these youngsters how it should be done

floridaaug07315.jpg

I get better as the afternoon goes on, but my array of injuries grows, until I get fed up of the pain, and go back to reading for a bit.

We stay on the beach till around 5.30, and then head back to the room to get ready (yes, we do have to give ourselves two hours to get ready….there are three females involved), via the shop, where we pick up a six pack….plastic surgery is so readily available in the States.

We also get some Bud, one of which I enjoy, watching TV whilst the girls ready themselves.

We are ready at about 7.15, and we wander downstairs to eat.

floridaaug07300.jpg

floridaaug07299.jpg

We go “big time” tonight, and tuck away a fair amount of food. I figure my walk and boogie boarding used up around 20,000 calories today!

We have –

Me – Crab Cakes (I got to pick the ones I wanted from the beach), Steak, Tidal Wave with Rebecca
Louise – Caesar Salad, Steak, Cheescake
Emily – Chicken Noodle Soup, Flatbread, Cheesecake
Rebecca – Caesar Salad, Pizza, Tidal Wave….

I kicked off with a martini too…very nice, a Glowtini in fact

floridaaug07303.jpg

You can just see the Caesar Salads in the background.

Rebecca’s pizza

floridaaug07304.jpg

Louise’s (and my) Steak

floridaaug07305.jpg

Emily’s blurred flatbread

floridaaug07306.jpg

I am concerned about my incompetence with the camera, but I put it down to being rushed. No food stays on the plate long enough to get the focus right!!

The cheesecake

floridaaug07312.jpg

and finally, Rebecca and I had a light dessert.

floridaaug07311.jpg

She was rather pleased with it too.

floridaaug07308.jpg

Being totally honest, I felt it was a bit of a dear do, at just under $200…but we enjoyed it anyway.

Now that we’d got a full belly we were ready to go and hit the clubs downtown.

Or we could just crawl back upstairs and collapse into bed at just after 10.

Phew..I think I dragged that out long enough…tomorrow…we do it all again….yet more beach and lots and lots more boogie.

Day Ten is Here

Great day. That tidal wave dessert is something else! Looks very nice.

Laur's princess:

Excellent. Excellent. Excellent. Fun. Fun. Fun. You managed to take a day of doing nothing and made it sound like quite something indeed. The photos of your smiling faces tell us what a good time everyone was having--doing nothing.
