I absolutely love this movie. There's just one thing though. I always find myself asking the same question: What kind of a nun would I make? Lol anyone else?

Love the movie, too. I used to put the record on the record player (I am old!) and sing along and dance across my living room.

Read the book long ago and was sort of disappointed that real life was not exaclty like the movie. (I was young then and believed in movies) I have been tempted to go to the Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont, but know that I would be sad not to see Maria singing in the mountains. Her grandchildren sing on tour and came here a few years ago.

I have never imagined my life as a nun.

Nikki, I think you would be like Maria. Conflicted. But with a heart full of love.

Lol Ty Lyn.

I don't know anything about the book believe it or not. Tell me about this lodge.

Ya think Sean would want to dress up as Cpt. Von Trapp for Halloween? I could be Maria.

The hills are alive with the sound of Kenny G.

Books
Maria: My Own Story by Maria Von Trapp
The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp

Books tell of their life after the movie. When they escaped and made it to the United States, it was a struggle. They had only their "ethnic" touring clothes. Eventually bought land in Vermont because it reminded them of their beloved alps.

Read the books for more details. That is from my memory of reading them long ago. Don't think they are on Kindle. You can borrow them from a library, or the library staff can get them for you from another library. Their true story is very inspirational.

Go to http://www.trappfamily.com/ to read about the lodge. Their farm has become quite a resort.

I had such a crush on Christopher Plummer, I thought Captain was ever so handsome! If you think Sean can pull it off, go for it.

I watched it also! ABC Family had great movies this weekend - I watched Parent Trap on Saturday night. I've turned into a hermit with this cold weather, so I'm glad there are good movies on!

I think Christopher Plummer is just about the sexiest thing in that movie! Where he and Maria dance the Laendler and they're singing "Something Good" in the gazebo.

Whew.....I'm having a heat flash!!!

Him and Marlon Brando in Guys and Dolls (well, MB in ANYTHING back in the 50's) gets me hot under the collar!!! :lovestruc

It's one of my all-time favorite movies. My daughter & I were watching it, and I probably annoyed her (with my bad singing voice) when I sang every single song.

Story -- when my kids were little a friend of mine (I use that term loosely) convinced them that the SoM was a stupid movie, and so they absolutely refused to watch it with me. Well, I forget the reason why (maybe school), but they weren't allowed to watch tv for awhile. One night, I put the VHS of Sound of Music on tv, and they were so desperate to watch anything that they sat and watched the movie with me. They LIKED it! They even sang the songs with me when I put the cassette on in the car. Lasted for awhile, and then they "outgrew" the Sound of Music (sigh). But it was nice while it lasted. lol

I read the book a long time ago, and one of the things I remember was when the von Trapps were singing in the US. They were really nervous, and then Maria (I think it was Maria) was singing with her mouth wide open & a fly flew in & she choked on it... Don't know why, but that story stuck in my mind for years.

Back to the movie. It's hard to tell what my favorite song is. I really love Do a Deer, but also really enjoy Little Goatherd & So Long Farewell, and will start naming them all off, and so will stop. I do have the soundtrack on my iPod. :)

Mary Jo, it was actually ME that used to hate it!!! I hated the music, the sappiness of it, everything, even though I had never seen it completely through!

I used to teach jr. high choir and after we finished a concert, I always let the kids watch a musical. They BEGGED to watch SoM. So I let them and was utterly charmed!!!! Definitely seeing it through their eyes helped!

In the summer of 1998, I studied abroad in Salzburg Austria. You would not believe how that town capitalizes on their SoM claim to fame! Bus tours, merchandise, even dinner theaters that do nothing but SoM! I remember one Friday night roaming the city, we stopped outside an outdoor dinner theater production and it was AWFUL! Of course, we were all snobby college music students so it could've just been our perception. It was kind of sad that they were shoving this crap down the throats of eager tourists! :scared1:

I visited Mirabelle Gardens where they shot most of the "Do Re Mi" scenes but didn't bring my camera. AND, my school was on the street that Maria is dancing down while she sings "I Have Confidence" Only now it's paved and cars, not cows go down it! Our school was on the grounds of the villa they used for all the exterior shots. I spent many a lunch hour on that same patio looking at that lake!!! Aaaahhh....the memories!!!

I have been to the Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont and it is beautiful. Back when Maria and the family were more involved, there were singing camps held there and singing pretty much every night. Now it's really just a vacation destination, near the ski resorts.
