We just did the DVC Soarin’ tour yesterday morning, so I can attempt to clear up a few things.
1. There were 16 people on our tour. There would’ve been more, but 2 other groups were no-shows. Apparently there are frequently groups that blow it off. Speculation was that since it’s ”free,” no one feels compelled to get there.
2. When reservations are made, the CM will heavily emphasize the need to be at Guest Services by 7 A.M. Everyone was there by 7, but they didn’t take us until closer to 7:30.
3. You must meet at the front of the park. Definitely no IG. And you have to get there on your own (drive your car or ride share) as no buses are running that early. Also, the Epcot parking lot is not yet opened at that time, so there’s a security guard telling you that you cannot enter yet. So just explain that you’re on the DVC Soarin’ tour.
4. Once you’re parked/dropped off, walk to the main entrance area. Security will definitely stop you there, and then you wait for the tour guide.
5, You need a park pass & ressie to Epcot that day as they do scan your band.
6. You pass through the same security as if you were entering normally.
7, They check everyone in, give you a name tag and listening device (like a smaller Walkman on a lanyard). An ear piece plugs in and goes around your ear.
8, The CM walks you over to Soarin’ through an empty Epcot. She gave us a brief history of all things Disney, sticking strictly to the company line(s).
9. I learned 2 things on this tour - one was about the land pavilion’s design (actually learned several things about the design), and one cool tidbit about who the original chief flight attendant was supposed to be (not Patrick!).
10. You briefly go backstage between The Land and Soarin’.
11. You enter the Soarin’ staging area (A, B, & C) from a side door, then ride.
12. The guide is at the exit at ride’s end. She slowly walks you to The Land main concourse, chatting and answering questions. You will not be free to go until 8:30 when EMH has already started. There are no keepsakes offered.
The tour is 1 hour or less, so the 7 A.M. time gives a huge buffer.

All in all a good experience, but by no means a game changer. Glad I got to do it, but I won’t be looking to do it again. DW and I thought we’d get a lot more on Soarin’, see more machinery and backstage ops. It was more of an oral history of Disney, leading to Epcot, throw in a good piece of Soarin’ history, then go on a ride. I’m not bashing it, I was just hoping to see/learn more.

Some practicalities have changed since I did it years ago, shortly after it was offered for the first time (we met inside Epcot and I could use the IG), but for the overall experience my judgment was identical to yours.
Nice, but it got me wanting more. Anyone willing to see more being the curtain should seriously consider a park tour. I loved both the Keys to the Kingdom (great value) and the Backstage Magic tours.

Have they restarted the tours? I'd love to do the Africa Trek at AK.

We did the Soarin' tour at DL and it was much more "behind the scenes" than what the WDW version did. We actually go to go behind the screen. They took us "backstage" and showed us the containers they used for the various scents. We also go to see the erector set that Mark Sumner used to illustrate how the ride should be designed. It was a short, but really interesting tour. So, if you get the chance to do this at DL, I highly recommend it. Hopefully the DL version is still the same!

Thanks. Maybe I can combine this with my stay at VDH, whenever that might be!

Thank you for the summary. Have definitely decided not to do it as I would have been greatly disappointed. I wanted to hear 'behind the scenes', all about the Computer Graphics (far too many in my estimation), why it was changed to this version (like other one better) and why they couldn't do better with the ridiculous distortion).
None of my questions are addressed so thank you for warning me.

Funny you say this. The guide mentioned that the orca was CGI, but didn’t address the rest of the graphics. She tried to make it seem like the evolution of the ride, since WDW is not in California, would be to showcase the world like the original Epcot message. The distortion was never addressed, and for our ride we all sat in section B, dead center, so the picture was perfect.

She was great, but definitely a company person!

My theory (I have NO confirmation) is that they had good intentions but were caught by the 2008-11 recession budget cuts. I too wish they’d toss the new version and go back to Soarin’ over California.

The very first time I saw Soarin' was a years' ago trip to Disneyland. I saw it in CA Adventure and it literally blew me away. I had never in my life seen anything close to that experience. It was a special experience and I was ecstatic when it came to Epcot. I wasn't ecstatic to see the new WDW version, all the CGI and distortion. It was upsetting and disappointing considering what it started out to be. I do agree world conditions did affect their decision making. Darn.

Good info. Looks like a one and done experience.
would sure like to experience, gave up trying to book it.

Had no idea the complimentary one was back, might give it another whirl. TBH, would be happy to pay for it. Likely, would make it far easier to book.

It's a DVC perk. How better to boast about being a Blue Card holder?
I had tried every trip before pandemic pause, didn’t know it restarted. Never managed to grab the AKL paid safari, even tho a home resort either. My track record solid on Moonlight Magic tho :flower1: Can’t win ‘em all

Does anyone know if this tour has been cancelled AGAIN ? It doesn't show up in the list of DVC perks.

I read somewhere that it had been discontinued (temporarily or permanently I don't know).

I was under the impression that this tour was more behind the scenes (getting to see how the engineering/mechanics work). In fact, I didn't even realize that the tour included getting to ride. I thought it was JUST seeing behind the scenes and I wanted to do it.

Since that apparently was not the case and it was just hearing some trivia and riding it, I don't feel as bad about missing it.
