Just read about these. Anyone have them? Are they fun to play? Looked at the Revolution one. Anyone have a favorite? Thanks :)

I've only played a little bit of Civilization, but they seem cool and I'm sure I would quickly become addicted.

We love Sid Meier's Pirates! pirate:

My son LOVES them! He has bought all of them, and plays them all the time.

We have Civ 5. It was very challenging to load and you need to make sure you have all the requirements, especially the video card. That being said, my DS (11) and I love to play it. It is also slightly educational - he has learned some geography and about early leaders, like Catherine the Great.

greatest time wasting game/series ever :thumbsup2 (if you get it/start playing it, you'll understand.... "just one more turn" ends up being 6 hours, and you realize the sun is coming up, you never went to bed and you have to be at work in a couple hours ;))

bought the original Civ way-back-when on a whim when I was a kid just poking around the pc game store.... played all the version through Civ 4

That's funny, I took pretty much the same route. I remember buying the original Civ when I was still running a DOS-based system (ahh my good ole' 486). I remember getting a certificate for an upgrade to Civ for Windows (3.1 I believe). Somewhere around my house I still have the installation Floppies for Civ for Windows. :thumbsup2

One of the best series of games ever!

I have all versions from 2 - 5.... two was my favorite.

If you get addicted, it is easy to spend 4 or 5 hours playing... just one more turn, just one more turn... just one more turn.... and then it's 3 AM! :rotfl:

I just got my Civ 5 a couple of weeks ago, and even though my laptop is fairly new, the game is very sluggish. Click "next turn", and the computer appears to go into a trance for two or three minutes. Move the cursor, and every time the delay is a few frustrating seconds.

As for the OP's question, Civ is definitely my favorite time-waster. Like others, I've gone successively through each version, and love them all (although the court is still out on Civ 5 - on the basis of Eeyore65's post, I'll have to check out my specs.)

I still play the original on the dosbox emulator. And Civ 3. I'm hitting the odd numbered ones, so I'm sorry to hear Civ5 is sluggish . . .

Love those games though--hours of "just one more turn" time wasting.

Thanks for all the responses. I looked at a free mini demo online, and it looked like it might be fun, plus educational for the grandkids and me this winter!:)

Theyre' generally fun, although they do have a couple "Huh?" moments - like when your battleship loses a fight to a phalanx. Or when you realize that it is easier (and faster) to run your government as communists, instead of democracies. (I played one game where, as a democracy, my people kept making peace. . . with a country that repeatedly would turn within a couple of turns and take another city. So, I'd declare war, start smashing the computers forces, and suddenly, before I could retake lost territory, my people demand peace. Two turns later, I lose another city. Process repeated until I got tired of it and switched governments.)

Maybe I will put some Civ games on my Christmas list though. They are fun, and amazingly addictive.

They are super fun but my PC never seems powerful enough to play the most recent one. I'll probably be playing Civ 5 in a couple years. The best was the Civilization they had for the Xbox. Revolution maybe? It was certainly not the best of the series, but I was able to easily and quickly play it with no sluggish computer response times.
