The Scuba Thread

I've been PADI Open Water certified since 1991 - just recently had to submit a request for a new card (haven't received it yet, though). For his birthday, I bought DH SCUBA lessons back in 1999. We're hoping to go on a dive trip together soon, but being pregnant a lot sort of got in the way. Hopefully soon, though!

I have to admit one of the reasons I ordered my new card was the idea of diving at Epcot this November. The thought of my kids seeing me on the other side of the glass, and interacting with them just sounds so cool! Maybe, just maybe......

We have decieded to do the dive in the Living Seas for sure:hyper: Does anyone know what the cost this year is ? How long is the dive? how long do they take to prep you for the dive?

Thanks
Mishell

I don't know what the cost is, but I'm planning on diving the Living Seas exhibit once I get down to WDW in the fall. I believe that you can get a discount for being either SSI or PADI certified, in addition to any other coupons or discounts that you may be entitled to. You have to ask about the discount when you're calling to reserve.

Fish - here's a link for tables ... this one has a lot of different agencies tables posted, so you can compare them .... http://www.scubadivers.ws/tablesi.htm

Mad4Mickey - I've seen a few reviews of the Epcot dive. All have been positive ... just check Google for DiveQuest, and you should find some. A lot of them mention the prep time/dive time

I am a PADI certified instructor with a little over 1,200 dives logged. I've done a lot of different kinds of dives including search and recovery for law enforcement and as a local guide when National Geographic dove Yellowstone Lake to document the underwater lava vents.
Never done Dive Quest though and I am thinking about it for a trip in September. If the dive time is 3 hours and the underwater time is 40 minutes; what exactly are you doing for the other 2 hours?
I had heard that they videotaped every dive, has anyone done this lately that can tell me whether this is still true? And if so, is the video they shoot available only on VHS or also on DVD?

I didn't realize that you could dive the Living seas exhibit! That would be so cool!

I haven't dived since I was in the Yucatan. That is a great area to go if anyone gets a chance. I even saw some type of large ray, maybe a Manta, also a barracuda, and lobster!

Great thread!:sunny:

here's a pic of my buddy and I off the Benwood wreck in Key Largo.

Of all the dives, I liked the wreck dive the most.

Too many dives to list. I love to spear fish. My favorite dive was at Crystal River, Fl. with the manatees! AWESOME!

I'm so glad I found this thread. Trying to talk DH into DiveQuest he doesn't want to spend the money. I think it would be way too cool.

Going on Eastern Cruise at Halloween and plan on diving in St. Maarten and St. Thomas.

Both of my sons have dived in Living Seas twice. They love it and say they're going for three! It has become a "must" for them every time we visit WDW now.

They tape your dive, and it's available for about $20 afterwards. My youngest tried to "pick up" some cute girls he saw through the glass the last time. He motioned to them to give me their phone numbers! Didn't work.

I'll let my oldest son take over and answer some of your questions, AZ JazzyJ.

Well Jeff,

To start off, I would highly recommend doing the trip. You not only are taken throgh a tour of the facilities (Backstage) but you are also given a short classroom session on what the seas are and why the exhibit is named as such. Being an instructor you know how long it takes folks to get dressed to dive. A good portion of your time topside is spent with the staff getting all the greenhorns ready. (I was lucky last time, and happened to be placed in a very experianced group. It only took us twenty minutes to get suited, and wet!) I would guess that you have either dived on or in an environment similar to Looe Key, Fl or the Great Barrier Reef. I can't speak about the latter, but the former I can say from experiance was put to shame by TLS. Nowhere else in the world will you see a more varied selection of sea life. true the biological geography (If I can call it that) is not correct, but what the hell! This is the best diving you'll find short of Heaven.
All in all the experiance is worth the $150 some-odd- bucks. The people are nice and the exhibit and resturant often have really hot women oggling over the divers.
Please do consider however that the acrylic windows are not for guys (like my brother and I ) to show off for girls in the restaurant.
The manager came out and at the objections of the girls chased us away. Later the DM gave us a formal chewing out and and informal high-five-well-done.
The Dives are all videoed (Wish I had that Job!) and you can buy a copy at the end. I know that you can have VHS but I'm not sure about DVD. Anyway enjoy your dive and let me know how it goes.

Wow! Must be one heck of a nice fellow DISer to send you their 15% off coupon. You are lucky to have such a good friend. ;)

Both my 13yo DD and I are SSI certified. I'm certified through Dive Con, DD is AOW.
Both of us LOVE to dive!! We have been planning to dive the Living Seas for awhile now. This October, during the Wine & Food Festival we will get our chance. Should be fun!!

Also in the works is as much diving as the non-diving DW will let us get in on the First ever 10day Christmas Cruise aboard the Disney Magic. Ports: St. Maarten, Antigua, St. Lucia and St. Thomas. The ship also stops in Key West, but we won't have enough time... (hate when that happens)

Gotta get wet!:hyper:

Just thought I'd post my report of Divequest on here, as it answers a lot of important questions that keep getting asked.

Hello,

Just thought I'd nip in to give my thoughts on DiveQuest at Epcot.

First off - I loved it! It genuinely was the most enjoyable dive I've ever done in my life

There were about 13 of us (11 guys and 2 women), and we met at guest relations outside EPCOT before having our t shirt sizes, shoe sizes and Dive certification taken. We were then taken through the cast entrance to the park, into the back of the living seas.

At this point they showed us a video letting us know what we would be doing during the dive, and made us sign a waiver. We then got lead to the changing rooms, where our short sleeved wetsuits, towels and lockers were waiting.

The next bit was where the fun started... Once we got changed, we were told about the Blue Lights that are backstage at DisneyWorld. Behind every door that says "Cast Members Only" or the like, there is a blue light. This is to let employees know when they are about to go "Onstage," i.e. when they are about to go into the public eye.

We all trailed out through an access door (under a blue light) with the instructor through the living seas, whilst getting pointed at by all the people around ("look at the diver people!"), before being taken up to the top of the tanks through an access stairwell at the end of the viewing platform.

When we got to the top, all our kit was sitting there, and we were assigned dive buddies - the fact is though, there's no point in having them for DiveQuest. The tanks have no alternate air source, and you're never more than 25ft from the surface, so your closest source of air will always be up! We all got kitted out, and went under.

First impressions were that it was everything I could have hoped for - We headed straight for the Dive Bell, where we were able to remove our regualtors and masks, because of the compressed air atmorphere inside. Quick wave to the camera, and then back under we went.

I then sprinted off to the viewing windows to see my family, where I did some flips, hovered upside down for a while, and waved to everyone on the other side of the glass. That was probably the best bit of the day - messing with the people on the other side of the acrylic! Scaring diners at the living seas was also a good laugh

The wildlife was spectacular too - the turtles were swooping about, and the fish thought we were feeding them, so they were very curious. One particular variety tried to eat the hair off one of the head of one of the women!

You get 45 minutes in the tank - if you run out of air during that time, you go back up and they'll slap on another tank of air and send you back down. I didn't need a refil, but some of the "bigger lunged" divers I was with were emptying two tanks over the dive.

When we emerged at the end of the dive, we were lobbed a towel, and taken back to get changed (hot individual showers/changing cubicles, shower gel, shampoo and more towels were provided), before going up to watch our video in the briefing room and to get our "DiveQuest" certificates and T Shirts.

You're then offered the chance to buy the video. It comes in two forms: a $35 NTSC format video, or a $70 DVD (that's right, seventy dollars) which has more footage. The video shows about 12 minutes diving, as well as a pre filmed intro, while the DVD adds to this with the briefing video you see before, and more footage of the dive. It gets sent to you after you leave WDW, to your home address. I opted for the video only (as did everyone on my dive) , and the footage was really good.

You get a discount if you have a PADI qualification (and the other equivalent certification, I can't recall the name) of 10% off the price, which you should ask for at the time of booking.

There are two dives a day, one at 4:30, and one at 6:30 (The second time is more of an educated guess - that dive was about to go in the tank as we were going to get changed to leave).

Some facts that aren't always made clear at booking:
You DO NOT need park entry to do DiveQuest
You CAN wear your own mask (whether it's prescription or not)
You CANNOT bring an underwater camera, fins, suit or any other equipment to use in the dive
You are tipped out into EPCOT following the dive, but you are not taken out of the park - This means you have from around 7pm until closing to do some rides, and take in illuminations. Which is nice!

All in all, I can't recommend it enough. I'll be doing it next visit, and if you're a qualified diver and you don't do it - you are missing out: BIG TIME!!!

I was a PADI instructor - the insurance got to be too expensive, so I don't teach anymore. I have done DiveQuest about 7 times, most recently last year.

While it is indeed exciting to say you have scuba dived at Disney and are, at the time of your dive, an honorary CM, it IS even more fun to "play" with the people on the other side of the aquarium glass.

Any questions, let me know.

And have fun at Dive Quest!

mmausse I hear it is 3 hours start to finish and then I hear other times such as 1 hour start to finish ( thats not enough time to suit up and go )
We have family that will be waiting for us so they are trying to figure out if they shoudl go ahead and do some rides till it is almost time for us to go into the tank.
I heard we have to take 2 hours of tank education before we go in the tank . We dont want them just having to sit there . So what do you think is any of this about right ?
Thanks for any help .

It can take around 3 hours, because before you go into the water you have to:

1) Check in at guest relations at the front gate, and wait for everyone else in your dive group
2) Get shown through the back of WDW into the Living Seas
3) Get spoken to for a bit about the dive
4) Go and get your wetsuits
5) Walk through the Living Seas and up to the top of the tank
6) Get introduced to your dive master and get buddied up
7) Get in the tank!

Then after the 40ish minutes in the tank, you then:

1) Walk back through the living seas
2) Get showered and changed back into your clothes
3) Go and watch the video, fill in your dive log, and have some soda (free!)
4) Get your T shirts and order videos
5) Get booted out into the park

It's a fairly long experience for the people waiting, but not for the people doing it :teeth:

We (DW & I) got our PADI OWD last year in Crystal River, Florida. We then did two dives while in Cozumel on our Western Cruise and had a blast. Incredible visibility, warm water, wonderful wildlife and a great divemaster.
This year we're doing some cavern diving in Crystal River, and then we'll do two dives on St Thomas while doing the Antigua-cruise.
We're also thinking about a dive-trip to the Maldives, the Seychelles or to Egypt's Red Sea next year.
Total of about 8 dives so far.

Always wanted to do the Seychelles. But what along way away. My brother lived in Israel for a long time. He dove the Red Sea quite a bit. Loved it, because it is so shallow you can dive and dive and never worry about decompressing. His slides are amazing. More "stuff' than I have ever seen in one spot. Go for it. My brother lived in Ceasaria for a few years, on the real sea, amazing trails there, too. You can follow paths over Herrods (Herods?) old harbor. Amazing country, not so safe, but amazing.
