The Running Thread --2025

I've been using Nuun tablets for awhile. I like them for some flavoring plus electrolytes and they have very few calories. Recently, they have revamped the flavors in the box I usually get: fruit punch, strawberry lemonade, grape, and tropical. The new flavor versions are not as good in my opinion - in particular, they totally ruined "tropical", which had previously been my favorite.

I may branch out and try some other flavors.

But does anyone have suggestions for a different brand with similar characteristics?
  • flavored
  • has electrolytes
  • no caffeine
  • few calories - but not the "zero calories" sort of thing, which usually means super sweet because of artificial sweeteners. The current Nuun I use has some artificial sweeteners, but I don't feel like it's over the top. I can't do a lot of artificial sweeteners.
I like Gnarly Hydrate powder. It has slightly more calories (30) and tastes great.

August was a very good training month for me. After one of the hottest Julys on record for NC, last month was the 5th coolest August on record. What a refreshing change! There were actually days when it was truly pleasant to run.

While I can still feel residual twinges in my hamstring, my running volume was back to normal and my pace is slowly coming back, although that's probably as much down to the cooler temps as it is to injury recovery.

I'm at the point now where I feel like I can register for my fall marathon. I decided to change up the race, though. While I'd really prefer to run the Emerald Isle Marathon, I'm going to shift to the RDC Marathon. Emerald Isle would require 2.5-3 h driving each way and a couple of hotel nights at the beach. With RDC I can roll out of bed and drive to the starting line in 30 minutes. The convenience factor is just too tempting.

At any rate, here are my August numbers:

August Training Summary
Running Miles: 162.51
Running Time: 34:24:44
Average Pace: 0:12:46/mile
YTD Mileage: 514.42
Walking Miles: 12.59

August Running
184.37 miles

On the topic of running shoes, we had a Skechers rep demoing shoes at our club run on Saturday. I tried out the Aero Burst. While Skechers doesn't come to mind first for running shoes, but this was actually a really good shoe. I can speak for how it felt for 12 miles, but it had a ton of cushioning and felt nice at various paces (it's a pretty cheap shoe too). You should at least be able to run faster than Tony Romo or Brooke Burke in them.
