The Running Thread --2025

Finally got off the fence and did it, signed up for my first Iron Man event. I registered for the Iron Man 70.3 in Waco, TX the first weekend in October. I am excited and scared to death at the same time. LOL. If anything, praying for somewhat cool weather that weekend. I took a look at last years race and it was 92 degrees.

I’m sorry if this question has been asked before in here, but can anyone recommend good gear (lighted vest especially) for running in the dark? I really am looking to get better about morning running in the summer (and for weekday evenings once sunset is earlier) and want to feel comfortable with something with good visibility.

By good visibility, are you wanting others to better be able to see you, or for you to better see where you’re going, or both? I have little need of others seeing me whee I run in the dark, but I really need to see where I’m going: I’m a huge fan of PETZL headlamps for this. I’ve gone through a few of their low-end models and their combo of wide illumination, multiple brightness settings, ability to customize the beam angle, and comfort is great. I bought cheap little red flashy lights that I can clip on to the back of the headlamp’s elastic band so if someone happened to be behind me on a short stretch of rarely traveled road, that would be visible from behind.

I like the NoxGear lighted vest, with optional chest lamp. It's better in the winter, when I have something on my neck, because it sometimes rubs against the left side of my neck

I was mainly thinking of others seeing me, but me being able to see is important too!

I can absolutely recommend the Noxgear Tracer vest for increasing your visibility at night. I use mine any time I run after dark, generally using the color cycling feature. I also like their optional light that clips into it. It's nice to have a light attracting bugs to your chest rather than your face.

Noxgear with chest light for me as well.
This is what I use too. There are similar ones out there but being visible at night is not an area I want to skimp on. I also added in some LED reflective arm bands last fall. They are too big for my arms so I use them around my ankles instead. There are 2 solid light options plus a blinking option.

I have a reflective vest that I clip LED visibility lights to, one in the front and one in the back. When I did a Ragnar a few years ago, they wouldn't allow the Nox-type vests that others are recommending and this is what they required. I run on sidewalks in our neighborhood. Someone was parking once as I came by and remarked that I was very visible, so I take that as a good thing.

For lighting my way, I like knuckle lights. I find headlamps annoying, and chest lights you can't really direct. The knuckle lights can be pointed easily. They are really light and have a strap around your fingers so you don't notice them. But it doesn't mean that you could hold something else big, like a water bottle.

Welcome to the world of “why be good at one sport when you can suck at three” ;)
All kidding aside, if you want any advice or insight, I’m happy to help if I can.

I just went outside to walk the dog and thought wow, it doesn’t feel too bad outside! Then I checked the weather: T = 75 and D = 74 (149).

When the T+D gets back into the 130s again, I’m going to feel unstoppable! 😝
Right?! Storms delayed my long run Saturday and I didn’t get out until almost 9am - I figured if all I could manage was an hour walk in the heat, I’d call it good… but the rain really brought the ambient temps down and I wound up having a great run in a T+D of 150-something! :rotfl: FL weather is… special. I feel like the usual running “rules” just don’t apply here.

Not running-related. But bikes, and I know we have some people who cycle/tri that could weigh in.

DH is trying to get back into road biking after a 22 year hiatus (as in, he stopped right before we started dating.) He picked up a nice used bike last week, and now we are working through adding bits of gear. I got him set up with a Strava account for now for speed/maps, but I assume he's going to want to add some sort of bike computer at some point. This could be an easy Christmas gift or something. Low end. Don't need a ton of bells and whistles. Under $200 for SURE. Any recommendations?

I just use my Garmin on my wrist that I use for running rather than a specific bike computer. It works well for me. Probably doesn't give me as much bike-specific data as a dedicated bike computer would, though.

Not sure who she was (glare on the car window), but someone honked, waved, and smiled as I was running today, which made my day. Sure beats getting yelled at. Really beats getting yelled at by some guy who is no doubt jealous of my slim physique, seeing me running like a gazelle.

Would you believe a wounded gazelle?
Would you believe like a hungry hippo...

(If you are of a certain age, you’ll get that TV reference)

I use a Coospo bike computer on my road bike and will also be switching it over to the tri bike I just picked up. I didn't need anything too fancy for me. For my purposes, I track the distance and other stats with my Garmin watch. But I like to be able to have time elapsed, mileage, and speed right in front of me. So that is mainly what I use it for. But the Coospo will save all the cycling data if you want. So far I have had no issues with the GPS. It has worked pretty great. Battery life has been good too. I think I paid around $50 for it.
