The Running Thread --2025

I posted this question over in Princess thread, but looking to ask a larger audience since I know not everyone reads all the different event threads.

Does anyone know if the only way out of the corrals to go back to the bathroom is out the back (before the corral closes obviously). I'm really wanting to get in the first couple rows of A for the 10k because I'm going for a PR all out race. I was stuck halfway back during the wine and dine 10k and wasted a lot of energy in the beginning weaving. I have no problem getting to the corral super early, but if I do that I'm pretty sure I'll have to run to the bathroom at some point. Will they let you out the side anywhere and then back in the same spot?

Officially, the back is the only way out. There is a corraled off area to the left of the start chute that has 1-2 potties and I have seen folks climb the barrier but that's not a choice that I would make.

Tbh, I'm not entirely sure what that area is for. I would assume it's for elites because I always see a few folks warming up over there but rD doesn't really do elite fields.

I reread the timeline of our mornings for Springtime Surprise 2023, when DD was aiming for the podium. Here it is slightly edited:
1:30AM wake-up, wash-up, make coffee, eat breakfast, get dressed and grab our bag
2:30AM leave room and lineup to catch the first bus
3:??AM pass security, check bag, pit stop
3:30AM go lineup at the gate to the corrals
3:45AM corrals open, warmup by jogging to A
4:00AM take position at the front barrier, warmup in place
4:30AM grab the tape, when the barrier is removed move a few meters from the first wave holding to the start area
4:58AM cheer for rollDisney
5:00AM start our runDisney race
I confirm that there is no separate Elite start or lineup for the 10k (answer from runDisney and by experience), hence the above.

@GollyGadget The holding area to the left is usually for the wheels athletes.

So, for a 5AM start, you can go to the porta-potty before 3:30AM. Then once you have settled in your corral, you can ask people around you to save you spot while you go and confirm with a volunteer as you exit through the back that they will let you back in to make it to your spot. I saw some people also leaving their water bottle or something to mark that spot. If you are in the very first corral and left something behind, you should make sure to be back before they remove the barrier at around 4:30AM because then everyone moves forward (also true for whenever a corral is walked towards the start).

Oh thank you for this. Didn't realize there was a barrier they removed around then. I went into the corral around that time for W&D and just couldn't make it past halfway. I must have just missed the barrier removal so everyone was already scrunched up.

They've moved the Skyway Bridge 10K to virtual this year due to hurricane damage. But if anyone was looking for a spring 10K and doesn't mind a virtual, registration is open and it's discounted to $60 right now: https://runsignup.com/Race/FL/SaintPetersburg/Skyway10K

It lists an event date of April 6 and does mention two days of pre-race pick-up, so it sounds like maybe they aren't shipping anything? I've sent an email to clarify and will report back.

Anyone in the mood to talk SHOES?!

My search for The Shoe has continued unabated for more than a year, with option after option falling fall short of my needs and expectations. But I might finally be onto something…

Firstly, I took a deep dive into Doctors of Running’s discussions about sizing and, specifically, about fitting arch length properly. And what I realized is that by following the old “rule” of leaving a thumb’s width of space in front of my toes, I was winding up in shoes that were too long: they were bending at a different point than my feet bend. Maybe that’s less of an issue for heel strikers? But as a forefoot striker, that was causing monumental issues for me. I’ve since tried a half size smaller in the Altra Escalante 4 and it’s night and day: the shoe’s arch lines up with my foot’s arch, I’ve still got a little space between my toes and the front of the shoe, and I’m running in them naturally - not adjusting any part of my gait to accommodate the shoe. I’ve done up to 7 miles at a time in them and they’ve been great.

Some trial and error also led me to realize I don’t do well with a ton of stack/cushion. Which isn’t ideal these days, as every shoe seems to be adding stack. I feel like we’re being gaslit into believing one HAS to have a bunch of cushion for longer distances… but if I go back and look at stack heights for “cushioned” shoes in which I happily logged tons of miles in the past, they were the equivalent of today’s lowest stack heights. I’m tiny and run lightly: the extra stack doesn’t get utilized properly and just makes my gait wonky.

I decided to try Newtons again after a long hiatus. The Gravity 2 goes down as one of my most favorite shoes ever - I wore them until the outermost lugs were literally gone from wear. The 3 was less fun for me, though still serviceable. After that, Newtons got hard to find, ludicrously expensive, and I’d found other options that worked. But out of desperation and a good sale, I decided to try them again: I’ve got a pair of Momentums and a pair of Fate 10s to trial over the next couple weeks - I took each for a very short jaunt on the treadmill and they felt great! Fit is perfect (again, NOT a full thumb’s width of space, more like half a thumb), ride feels natural. I’m actually feeling hopeful!

Anyone else have a shoe saga going on these days?

I'll have one this summer. NB has changed the 1080 so much that it's not working as well for me, so I'm going to be on the prowl for something else. I didn't hate the Saucony Triumph when I tried it on in the store, so that's probably where I'll start. My issue is that I've worn 1080s for literally everything (running, refereeing, and as casual-wear) for 4 years now.

Always enjoy shoe talk!
Not a saga yet so much but soon if I can’t find a new favorite for long slow runs. Still have decent options for shorter daily runs and for races but the past two longer training run shoes have failed me miserably. I have picky feet and feel your pain, I’m wishing you the best of luck in your search. I will agree that for me a least, the arch fit is more important than the toes, though I go with extra room if I can.

Yes. Although it may be a knee saga or ITBS issue, or an overtraining issue... A year ago I swore by Karhu Ikoni 2.5's. I now have four pairs. These felt great as I was having an ankle issue. However, I found out that they were actually quite firm and when we did the Wine and Dine weekend, my knee and ankle joints were very sore. I then picked up a pair of Brooks Glycerin 21 and a pair of Saucony Ride 17. Both seemed ok while training for the Dopey challenge, until I developed a toe thing and also a different knee pain (that I think is ITBS). So while at the Marathon weekend after running the 5k and 10k on the Brooks Glycerin 21's we went to the expo where I got a pair of Asics Novablast 5, which are cushy, but felt more stable that Hoka's that I had tried. So the Novablasts were awesome for the Half and the Full - I had no issues with the soreness. And the toe thing bothered me, but now seems to have settled down. But, the ITBS thing is still lingering. Now, I am trying to just do short, slow runs to avoid that flaring up along with strength exercises. So I am not sure if any of the shoes are best for me.

I seem to like shoes that allow my feet to sort of spread out, I don't tie the laces tight at all - usually leave them loose enough that I don't even untie them.

No current shoe issue, but I just bought a pair of Brooks Ghost 16 and when I asked about when the 17 would come out they mentioned that they may have a higher stack height. To which my response was "If I wanted to run in a Hoka, I'd buy a Hoka."

I hope they were wrong. Otherwise, I'll be on the lookout for something new.

They better not screw up Ghosts, I only just got into them with the 15s 😭😭

I mean, isn't that what the Ghost Max is for?

I don’t understand why they keep doing this. Big change happened with Glycerin a few years ago and as a result I had to change to a new brand (Hoka, coincidentally lol).

How different are the 16s from the 15s? I've generally liked the 15s, even though I'm not confident they're *the one* yet. I've considered buying a couple of extra 15s in case they go and screw them up, but I'd rather not if I don't have to.

Shoes: My shoes were all the "thin" soled shoes until my Morton's neuroma showed up. The Hokas provided enough extra cushion to finish training for and completing the MCM. I've had and have Glycerins, Waverriders, and Ghosts. For one of them, (maybe Glycerin?) when I went back to buy new shoes, they had changed the shoe and it was no longer comfortable for me. I hate that! Based on that, when I now go to the running store, I make sure not to assume anything and to try on what looks like the best option. And if I'm smart, I'll buy a second pair as a hedge against unwanted changes by the manufacturers.
Back to Hokas: when I first tried them, I didn't realize that I was buying what the DDs had been wearing as a fashion statement with the thick soles. But they sure were lifesavers when nothing else worked. So they are still in my ~5 pair rotation for walks/runs as I get back to regular training. Unclear exactly what I'll be wearing as I get back to longer distances.
