The Running Thread - 2019

I haven’t tried sweatcoin but RunArnoRun has a video review of it on YouTube. I think he’s been using it about a year. If your considering it, it’s probably worth checking that out.

I don’t use it but my brother in law uses some of the zombie running apps to gamify his running.
That video is what made me think of it!

I'm sure this question has been asked a million times already but what phone apps do you interval runners use to time your run/walk intervals? My very run-phobic younger DS suggested that he might be willing to try very short run intervals on one of our daily walks. I'm desperate to get him moving more.

App related: Anybody use the Sweatcoin app? I'm kind of a tinfoil hat wearer and am constantly on edge about phone privacy, which may be a hopeless cause by now. Is Sweatcoin just a way to spy on you? Is it actually a Very Good Thing? Anybody know?

I don’t use my phone or interval timer anymore but when I did it was an iPhone with a very simple app. Pace lite free version, set up your intervals and tell it how many times you wanted to repeat. It would beep three seconds at each interval, simple as that. That is all it would do but it would run in the background as well separate from other apps. I like simple, functional apps that work in the background. I used to sync my earbuds, start map my run, Amazon music, and pace lite then turn off the phone and run

Quick race report....

Ran the MR8K today - a 5 mile race put on by the MR8 foundation, which is in honor of Martin Richard, the 8 year old killed in the Boston marathon bombings.

Race took place at New Balance headquarters, around city neighborhoods - and the course was surprisingly hilly - uphill for the first 3 miles!

Sunny and warm, a little too warm - but overall happy with my run! Had Harpoon beer for finishers and Wahlburgers tots.

Overall great race with my running crew - for a special cause. #bostonstrong

I usually use RunDouble when running with my younger son. At some point in the past I sprung for the unlocked version ($5) which gives you the full couch-to-5k set plus 5-to-10k, 0-to-10k, various longer training plans, and arbitrary intervals.

The first week of C25K is 60s run/90s walk x8, and I believe is included in the 'free' version. (It gives like the first three weeks of C25K free, as I recall.)

You could start with fartleks, I love being unstructured, plus you can be juvenile and snicker with your kid every time you say “fartlek.”

Don’t make my mistake, wash those running hats and visors regularly to prevent salt buildup in the fabric.

I don't think I'd ever washed a running hat, although it's been quite recent that I've had an actual running hat (as opposed to an old baseball cap that was designated for running use).

After Bridge to Bridge, I noticed that my running hat was...um...a little stiff at the top. Like there was a whole lot of salt encrusted there.

So, after this morning's (light) run, into the wash it went. It's much better now.

August Miles: 94.2
Average Pace: 11:13/mile
2019 Miles: 677.1

I had one race scheduled for August, a local half marathon with a downhill finish. Unfortunately, there was a big hill around mile 4 that zapped my energy for the remainder of the race. So, no PR but I was only 50 sec. behind last year’s time. I missed the conversation about age based PR’s, but I may be beginning to plateau...

It has been a challenging few days as I have thrown my back out twice and was rear ended in between. (It was not serious, but my car will need repairs and my second back injury has been much more painful than the first...) However, I am looking forward to beginning marathon training on September 10th!

August Miles: 100.78
Average Pace: 10:27
Time: 17:14:48

A good August, even though I had to stop my running streak.

I also ended my step streak this weekend - I had a wedding all day Sunday and didn't wear my Garmin because....well...it didn't go with my dress! I would have hit my goal I had worn it.

Yesterday, I was in the car for about 6 hours and only got about 4500 steps for the day. I was going to run when I got home, but I was just too tired and my feet hurt from dancing in heels at the wedding, so I called it quits.

Back at it today!

I think runkeeper app does intervals. Don't know anything about sweatcoin, but it probably does track you and might sell the info to third parties.

I started off using the free version of Runkeeper, which works just fine. I upgraded to iSmoothRun because I like its voice better and use the heck out of its data tracking for nutrition alerts, shoe mileage, etc.

I've used an app called "SIT" to time my intervals for several years. It stands for Simple Interval Timer, and that's exactly what it is; nothing fancy and it's just beeps. When it's time to start or stop, there's a series of 3 beeps then 1 long beep to start running, and a stopwatch type beep to start walking.

I do really hate the beeps as time goes on though...

Great job! I've never done Big Peach Sizzler but its been on my list.

I recommend it. Convenient for either 5k or 10k as both start and end at a Marta station. Food was good. We had Flying Biscuit breakfast. After a 5k I really did not need all that food but it was good. They had beer from Tucker brewing. It was well run. Only complaint I had was on awards. They were supposed to start at 8 and they did not start till 8:25. I wanted to be on the 8:32 train. I did just make it, train pulled up just as i was on the platform but i had to book out as soon as i got my award. It was a holiday so trains were on a 20 minute schedule and I was trying hard to be home by 9 because I still needed to get Mallory out.

A bit behind posting because of vacation, but I successfully completed my first 10K on 8/24! I used a 12-week training plan from Runkeeper (I forgot to cancel after a free trial of the premium version 🤦‍♂️so figured I may as well get my money's worth), and it had me aiming for a 13:00 pace based on my last 5K, which was pretty slow as it had been in the middle of a fairly long streak of not running. I knew I could do better than that as my training progressed so I set my own goal of a 12:00 pace, and am very happy to have beaten that by more than a minute. My final time was 1:07:55 so a 10:50 pace.

Felt really good during the race. Pretty sure my training being during this miserably hot summer in Virginia paid off as it was a nice cool morning near the water in Jamestown. Managed to keep a pretty constant pace around 11:00 that was in Zone 4, and only pushed myself to the max the last bit since I felt like I had enough in the tank to do so. I probably could've pushed harder throughout for a better time, but didn't want to overdo it on my first 10K.

Only real negative of the race was it being an hour away with a 7:15 start, so I had to be up at 4:45 that morning. I may need to revisit the definition of "vacation", as my first two days involved waking up before 5 a.m. -- we left for Universal at 4:30 the next morning, which was a lovely 12 hour drive. 🤪

I'm registering for the second annual 5K that benefits the Smithsonian Zoo and takes place in downtown DC on 9/14. My family loves visiting DC and we're excited to have a reason for a short weekend trip now that the busier tourist season is over. And I'm excited to actually be at a much better running fitness level this time.

After getting back from our Universal trip and Labor Day weekend prepping for our oldest to start back at school yesterday, it seems I'm 10 pages of posts behind. 😂 Did a quick skim and my main takeaway is that I need to go wash my hat immediately. :crazy2:

Labor Day is gone. Summer is fading fast. Getting darker earlier each night. Two thirds of the year have flown by, where did the time go?

How is everybody doing with their goals for the year? Have you already accomplished it or hope to do so this Fall? Details....let's hear it.

ATTQOTD: I had a couple of goals this year. Running 1200 miles at a minimum. Last year I ran 1264 miles. I'm ahead of pace and should set an all time high by end of the year even with skipping two months this Spring.

I also wanted to run a marathon and a half marathon in South Carolina and a half marathon in Delaware this year.
Myrtle Beach Marathon=check.
Charleston half marathon not scheduled until January 2020- I will just miss that goal.
Lederhosen Half Marathon in Delaware coming up in three weeks so I can get that one checked off soon.

Finally I hoped to stay injury free (so far so good) and try for a PR in either 10k or Half Marathon (probably not going to happen this year).
