The Running Thread - 2019

QOTD: Since we are starting the list for January races with the hot race of the month being Marathon weekend at WDW, I wanted to ask where are your favorite places to take photos with your medals post race?

ATTQOTD: I usually forget to take photos. I don't usually know anyone else at the races I do, and when I get done, I just want to get into warm and dry clothes. Then after I do that I remember that I didn't take a photo! Eventually I make copies of all the copyrighted race photos and call that good enough. :)

ATTQOTD: First and foremost, I get a picture of my medal with my finish line beer. Always. Must have. After that I usually forget to take anymore. Since I did have some solo free time during Dopey I did get some castle pictures with them. Otherwise I just stole @rteetz's photos because I was lazy and he had a good set up. Hahaha.

ATTQOTD: For Medal pics I like to get one with the medals hanging with the park icon with some boka . For Magic Kingdom I wind up standing on the wall by the Plaza restaurant and shooting towards the castle. In Epcot it's usually over by Italy. At princess in Feb we wound up sending the pics we took of my medals hanging over WS lagoon to other people who didn't want to stretch and hang their medals out over the water.

I also like to get character pics.

For marathon Weekend since we usually have a group we get a picture on the last night of the table with everyone's medals from the weekend arranged on it.

Can you add races for me
11 - IamTrike - Walt Disney World Half Marathon (Goofy)
12 - IamTrike - Walt Disney World Marathon (Goofy)

This is late but I wanted to add it: My DOCTOR shamed me for running on my vacation! She also had a couple of students/interns with her in my appointment and they proceeded to tell me that I was wasting my vacation by running at Disney and that I should just be laying on a beach somewhere, basically laughing at me the rest of the appointment. You would think your doctor would be happy that you are being active? The only reason I told her about the race was because she asked if I was doing anything for exercise as my blood pressure was so healthy/low. I now have a new doctor!
This is really shocking to me. I don't understand why a Doctor would be that ignorant.

Jumping in here to ask a quick question if you all don't mind. I'm going to buy new running shoes in the next couple weeks. My current ones are at 175 miles. Does anyone have suggestions for breaking them in?

For new shoes that are different than what I've run in before I don't usually do much to break the shoe in, but I do usually start using them for shorter runs so I can bail if they are rubbing my foot weird. The only exception would be for times when I've decreased the drop in my shoes. When I've transitioned to lower drop shoes I did gradually build mileage in those shoes while my legs became acclimated to the change.

ATTQOTD: Pretty much everywhere around the parks/resorts. Also, with characters where possible. The Star Wars races had tons of characters in the finish area. We also went to Launch Bay. Marathon weekend we did a character breakfast and the Character Spot.

ATTQOTD: I've only ever taken medal shots with a few characters at the finish line. I guess I've just never remembered to throw my medals in my park bag after the race.

This is crazy. Last fall I had both a physical and a cardiac evaluation. I'm hitting a big age milestone this year, have a family history of heart issues, and am increasing my running so though it would be a good time to make sure everything is going well. Both doctors were so happy with my diet and exercise that they almost teared up. :) You would think most doctors would feel that way.

ATTQOTD - Only one race in the books, but we took a couple pictures in front of a topiary in Epcot and with Buzz in TSL.

I usually plan a small loop for the first time with new running shoes and then change into old ones if I have more running to do. I slowly increase the distance until they feel normal to me, usually 2 or 3 runs suffice.

January 2020:
9 - Sleepless Knight - Walt Disney World 5K (NG / N/A)
10 - Sleepless Knight - Walt Disney World 10k (NG / N/A)
11 - Sleepless Knight - Walt Disney World Half Marathon (NG / N/A)
12 - Sleepless Knight - Walt Disney World Marathon (NG / N/A)

Marathon #2, Goofy #2, and Dopey #2 for me.

I wanted to ask where are your favorite places to take photos with your medals post race?
Sleeping Beauty Castle, Spaceship Earth, and Cinderella Castle for certain.

I have always taken my medal for a given race to a park in search of that character. The level of interaction is neat when they see the medal and pose/ham it up.
Some of my favorite character moments ever came after races. Captain America recruited me to fight Hydra, Anna asked me if I would ask Captain America if they could borrow his shield for sledding in Arendelle. They wanted to ask him, but weren't sure how he would feel about visting Arendelle on account of being frozen in ice for 70 years. Chewbacca loving my Millennium Falcon medal and Kylo Ren not loving that same medal. Rey commenting on my Kessel Run medal at Disneyland. Minnie getting very excited for any medal involving her, Mickey, or as it turns out, BB-8. She also decided to have the 10K medal kiss the marathon medal. Mickey counting all my medals after Dopey. Chip and Dale playing with the marathon spinner medal and proudly showing it off to everyone. I tend to get a lot more character photos after races for this very reason. The interaction can be off the charts fun.

I don't have a specific one but I agree with just trying to find something fitting in the park that goes with the theme.
Someday I will get a picture of me with the Kessel Run medal in front of the Millennium Falcon in Galaxy's Edge. In 2017, I took a picture with the Kessel Run medal next to the future entrance to Galaxy's Edge in Disneyland.

I don’t take a lot of pictures with my medals. I do plan to carry all 60 of my medals into Magic Kingdom for a picture in front of the castle if I finish Dopey #10 still perfect. It’ll probably be a long security process.
Now that would be awesome to see. I often call my all medal photo pictures "neck brace" shots and that would be one heck of a neck brace.

ATTQOTD: I'm not very creative so if I see a medal shot on social media that I like I just copy it.
I do this a lot too. It's how I discovered the hanging your medals on the posts inside Disneyland/Magic Kingdom or the variant I did at Disney's Hollywood Studios of hanging my medals on the rope in front of the Millennium Falcon mural where the Galaxy's Edge entrance is going to be. I also discovered some incredible magic shots a PhotoPass photographer was doing in the Magic Kingdom after the 10K this year. I also found a photographer back by the Beast's castle who was kind enough to take some photos of me with the Dopey medal with the Seven Dwarfs mine in the distance.

The standby queue for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train has some tremendous photo ops with the Dopey medal.

First, with my beer in the parking lot. Second, with whatever characters I can find in the finish area. Third, in every country at every bar during DATW.

I'll go with you.... if I'm there. ;)

What do you mean "if"?? It's "when"!
