The Running Thread - 2019

QOTD: Since we are starting the list for January races with the hot race of the month being Marathon weekend at WDW, I wanted to ask where are your favorite places to take photos with your medals post race?

ATTQOTD: I do not have a particular location, I just want it to include a drink in my hand, specifically a dole whip with rum lol!

Behind again, so jumping in with yesterday's although the candy one made me super hungry!

ATYQOTD: I am not a lurker but I have NOT been running, sigh. And I PROMISED DH that I wouldn't start again until after we get home from my son's wedding in Cali. We will be back the week of June 3rd so hope to start running again some time after that. We just have too much to do between now and then as I am basically my DS's wedding planner!

ATTQOTD: I apparently don't have a favorite location as my pictures are all over the place. And I also apparently did not take one single picture with my Star Wars Medal. Whoops!

I feel like shaming people for running/being active is the same as shaming people for not being healthy. If you don't have anything nice to say... :rolleyes1

This is late but I wanted to add it: My DOCTOR shamed me for running on my vacation! She also had a couple of students/interns with her in my appointment and they proceeded to tell me that I was wasting my vacation by running at Disney and that I should just be laying on a beach somewhere, basically laughing at me the rest of the appointment. You would think your doctor would be happy that you are being active? The only reason I told her about the race was because she asked if I was doing anything for exercise as my blood pressure was so healthy/low. I now have a new doctor!

Wow. That is inexcusable. And kudos for finding a new doctor. Why is it so hard to find one that is competent, empathetic and supportive? (I am also looking for one. Reason? Got so ticked off at my physical, oh excuse me "Wellness Screening", when I was handed a document that basically said "You're here for a screening. We will do this and this and this. Don't ask about anything else." Excuse me? If I have a problem, I can't bring it up at my physical? Okay, mini-rant over!)

ATTQOTD: I have always taken my medal for a given race to a park in search of that character. The level of interaction is neat when they see the medal and pose/ham it up. Plus I am cheap and don't do Photopass!

Since it seems to be the “in” thing today, I’ll throw my Marathon Weekend runs into the mix:

January 2020:
9 - camaker - Walt Disney World 5K (Dopey) (NG / N/A)
10 - camaker - Walt Disney World 10k (Dopey) (NG / N/A)
11 - camaker - Walt Disney World Half Marathon (Dopey) (NG / N/A)
12 - camaker - Walt Disney World Marathon (Dopey) (NG / N/A)

Ya for everyone signing up for marathon weekend! I think I'm skipping it in 2020 in favor of Star Wars but I'll be able to live vicariously through the rest of you :)

My favorite medal spot... I don't have a specific one but I agree with just trying to find something fitting in the park that goes with the theme. My favorite one I did was the Avengers half medals with the Guardians of the Galaxy/Tower of Terror ride in the background.

I like getting my medal photo with characters, too. In 2013, it was Mickey. In 2018, I'm not sure I did a character photo with my medal. In 2019, I found Scrooge McDuck in Animal Kingdom - and he is my absolute favorite. Interacting with him and my half/Donald medal was so much fun - a great memory. I asked why he doesn't have a medal - he led me over to the giant trophy that was behind him and "said" that was his medal. I told him it would be a little uncomfortable to wear around his neck though!

(It was even sweeter because I waited in line for Scrooge in the reunion area after the 2013 race and he switched out for Daisy Duck right before it was my turn. I was so mad!)

Great times.

In my desperate attempt to hang with the cool kids I guess I’ll add my January 2020 races @LSUlakes :

9 - barca33runner - Walt Disney World 5K (Dopey)
10 - barca33runner - Walt Disney World 10k (Dopey)
11 - barca33runner - Walt Disney World Half Marathon (Dopey)
12 - barca33runner - Walt Disney World Marathon (Dopey)

Currently no goals other than to finish Dopey #7 and stay perfect. May change depending on how my training goes.

ATTQOTD: I don’t take a lot of pictures with my medals. I do plan to carry all 60 of my medals into Magic Kingdom for a picture in front of the castle if I finish Dopey #10 still perfect. It’ll probably be a long security process.

@LSUlakes you rock!

October 2019:

13 - MickeyMomma - BOA Chicago Marathon (5:44:xx / N/A)

January 2020:
10 - MickeyMomma - Walt Disney World 10k (NG / N/A)
12 - MickeyMomma - Walt Disney World Marathon (NG / N/A)

Can you back-post a race? Even if it wasn't my favorite day of racing? If so:

March 2019:

31 - MickeyMomma - Covenant Health Knoxville Half-Marathon (2:39:xx / 2:53:57)

ATTQOTD: Wherever I can find a photopass photographer! :rolleyes1

Saw this in the Times today. No balloon ladies, just a bus. (And a participation medal)

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/23/sports/slow-runners-sweeper-bus.html?searchResultPosition=1

Cracked up at the guy at the end! (Won't ruin for other readers.) Also as someone who has driven that route multiple times, I understand the need to get it opened back up, but to me the bus doesn't seem to have its timing quite down. A mile or so to go and 25 minutes? Feel like that runner had a pretty decent chance of finishing under the time requirements if she in fact was correct about where she was picked up.

ATTQOTD: I kind of suck at taking medal photos. But I did find Gaston after the 5k in November. That was the best. I was totally smitten. Great pics with him and the medal.

My 8 year old is running the 5k with me at W&D. She is already compiling a list of photos locations with her medal. I'm so excited to run this with her.

ATTQOTD: Depends on the race theme... for Marathon Weekend races, I've been taking some nice (if I do say so myself! I'm an amateur photographer...) shots of medals in various spots with the MK castle as backdrop. For SW, my favorite was using the SW text crawl on the carpet in Launch Bay as background. W&D I've used food and drink and/or SE as a background.

ATTQOTD: In front of landmarks for the race...so at Disney it depends on who is on the medal (i.e. for the Wine and Dine half last year I took the medal picture in front of the theater where Mickey's banner hangs). In other locations, it just depends on the theme of the race.

Another doctor rant here...I was prescribed anxiety medication last year and my doctor only scheduled a yearly follow up appointment. He failed to mention that weight gain was a side effect until I went back a year later and had gained over 10 pounds, even with running over 1,800 miles that year. When I went to the follow up appointment, I asked if weight gain was a side effect and he said "yeah, I noticed there had been some weight gain based on your chart, have you been exercising at all? I should have mentioned that at the original appointment." :rolleyes2 Within the next month, I changed doctors and weaned off the medicine based on her recommendations. The new one knows that I am active and never makes me feel rushed during appointment, and also doesn't just load me up with meds when I have an issue (I had become immune to Z packs from being prescribed them so many times). Glad you have both found new doctors @Dis5150 and @jmasgat!

ATTQOTD - Only one race in the books, but we took a couple pictures in front of a topiary in Epcot and with Buzz in TSL.

Jumping in here to ask a quick question if you all don't mind. I'm going to buy new running shoes in the next couple weeks. My current ones are at 175 miles. Does anyone have suggestions for breaking them in?

Everywhere....

I love taking candid shots of the medals in the hub area at MK. I do it every year.

You can’t go wrong with the park icons of course. Photos with characters are great too.
