The Running Thread - 2016

Anyone ever tried to change(increase) their cadence? Geez that's hard to do without really thinking about it.

I did over the course of several months/years. I agree it felt unnatural and required a lot of focus in the beginning. My body has since adapted and now it feels more natural. Although, now I'm trying to go through another change slowly.

Yes, about a year ago, I started working on increasing my cadence. As you and @DopeyBadger experienced, it takes mental effort at first. I would say after about a month, it started to feel natural, but I would still need to focus off and on at times. After 2-3 months, it seemed pretty darn normal and has felt normal since then. For reference, prior to my concerted effort, I was running at a cadence of about 160-165. I now run in the 175-180 range for most of my runs.

ATTQOTD - 186 miles running
Average HR = 131 BPM - nice improvement here since it also came with faster paces across the board. I am peaking everywhere for the year right now.
P90X - 13.5 hours

My long run is up to 22 miles. December is a little more challenging as I do my final prep runs for Dopey, but I feel like I could do well if the Dopey races were this weekend.

QOTD: It's the end of the month. What is your monthly mileage for November?

10 more today will get me to 124 for the month. A disappointing marathon during Ironman Florida has me ready to go for the Louisiana Marathon in January.

My last big race was at the very end of October. So I literally have no idea my mileage for November!?? I do a terrible job of keeping track when the treadmill months are upon me...since my garmin just has my outdoor miles on it...and I've been running by time not miles lately.
So I bought a 17 month 2017 planner and it's arriving tomorrow in the mail. Gonna get serious about being more organized with my stats, especially during the floaty periods between training plans.
I want to get AT LEAST 48.6 miles in December (my version of Dopey) and I'm just going to see how soon I get there.

Stats fail for the month!

If you get a Garmin foot pod, you can use it on the treadmill and see pace & speed on your watch.

Every time I've tried to increase my cadence my knees start to hurt. Given my history with knee surgery I've decided to leave my cadence alone.

It definitely requires focus. I find myself having to look at my watch too much. And not natural either - especially on slower runs. Feels like I'm shuffling sometimes. But like you all said, I'm sure it will get feeling more natural.

Hello my fellow LSU friend. Are you running Baton Rouge Beach this weekend?

If you get a Garmin foot pod, you can use it on the treadmill and see pace & speed on your watch.

Do you find that what the Garmin says you are at for pace/speed equals closely to your treadmill? I've always wondered about that with the gym treadmills.

The newer Garmins don't even need a footpod... my 220 has an accelerometer in it. You just need to make sure to turn off the GPS before using it on the treadmill.
I have the Garmin Forerunner 220...got it new last year. Sounds like I need to re-read my instruction manual!! This is exciting if mine has that functionality.

I'm in total 2017 goal-making mode right now...to go with my newly purchased daily planner...I just purchased a motivational water bottle with how much I need to drink each hour and some backup silicon ice trays to go with it. It's like I'm nesting, but instead of having a baby...I'm having a half marathon.

Thank you @Miranda for changing my life, haha. I found this tutorial with a quick google for my specific watch and will try it out at my Thursday gym session tomorrow. You rock (and I don't, since I clearly don't read my manual thoroughly enough)

Oh and here's my new giant water bottle that's in the mail right now.

The wrist based accelerometer is not very accurate for running pace, so I wouldn't get too excited. I pretty much ignore my watch's pace/distance info when I'm on the treadmill.

ATTQOTD: I missed a few runs to work obligations so I will end the month at 154 miles. Hoping to squeeze one more run in tonight after the girls go to bed. It is totally random but still hoping to get to 1800 for the year and with the taper in December an extra run now and a few extras in the first couple weeks of December just might get me to reach it.

Yes, I used the "treadmill" setting on mine on my TM run last night and it said I ran 37.38 minutes at a 27:02 pace??? I actually ran 37:50 at a 15:00 pace. It said I ran 1.39 miles and my TM said I ran 2.5?? So idk what my garmin was doing. :confused3

Womp Womp, it was too good to be true. Well I guess I'll give it a shot just to see how off or not it is and to at least remind myself I ran that day. Maybe a footpod is eventually a better idea (and a good Christmas wishlist item.) I wonder if I'll be hyper aware of my arm movements though. I think I may use my arms differently on the treadmill just logistically with all the bars and everything in front of me. I guess something "fun" to think about next time.

November totals:
Miles: 59.3
Time: 8:46:13
Avg Pace: 8:52

I got lazy after getting back from Wine & Dine weekend (in addition to coming back very sick) and skipped several runs, so not a stellar month. I'm chocking it up to needing some mental recovery from being very focused on my September and November race goals for the past 7 or so months. Planning to start December fresh and focused!

Ah well. :) I haven't actually used mine in that mode for running (I quite often use it with GPS off to record my spin class so that it will auto-sync to Strava for me), but I didn't think that it would be that far off. I thought I had remembered DC Rainmaker's review saying that it was ok, not great, not terrible, but maybe I was misremembering. :) Sounds like the foot pod might be better, though.
