So sorry for your loss. It's good to hear that running has helped keep your head above water during such a tough time.Got behind in 15 pages in reading. Lost my father last week and, no matter how old I am, I feel a little like a sad orphan. He was't a runner but was 89 1/2 and lived independently until the middle of June when he started having health problems. Hope those good genes keep me running for a little while longer. My running schedule has actually kept me sane, and I only missed 2 scheduled runs during the very hard month!
August mileage:
108 mi
19.41 hrs
Pace: about 10:48/mi - slow but consistent finishes the race!
Started with a pace group once. Felt like I was in a constant bottleneck with people all over me. Ran ahead a little to get breathing room and finished a minute or two ahead of them.

I used run :30 or 1:00/walk :30 intervals last fall for 1.5 months to finish my Dopey training after developing Piriformis syndrome (glute muscle). It did help keep my conditioning up even though my mileage was cut back. If intervals help than I would definitely do them! Walking uses different muscles too so then by starting them now if you have to do them in your races you'll be built up for them and good to go. Just make sure you gradually go from the run to walk and walk to run to not mess anything else up, use the shuffle as Galloway calls it I think.
Have you tried doing regular stretching and strengthening exercises for your ITB? When I had ITB problems, I found strengthening my glutes, aligning my hips properly, and keeping the ITB stretched on a daily basis helped resolve things quickly and keep any problems from recurring.
Yup, this is what my PT has me doing, along with some strength exercises. My interest in intervals is around how I can pick myself up for wine & dine. by the time we get to November, if things stay the way they are now, I won't have run over 5km since July (when I did a PB half). I don't want to go out and hurt myself again by being under trained and in recovery all at the same time. Trying to develop a strategy for the next 7-8 weeks.
It looks like Minnehaha will be a bit too far, so I guess I'll try out the wildlife refuge. I'm impressed someone was from near the right area - MN is a big state (compared to my tiny home state of CT).
We'll also be going to the Rennaissance Festival while we're there, so I'll get some extra walking in along with my runs.
I have ever heard of Gu being used outside of running either. Even when I played football I never heard of it being used for that.QOTD: Last night as I was driving home from my run I tuned into the radio broadcast of the FSU Ole Miss game and the announcers are talking about players cramping up. Then I the guys mentions how the team is taking in GU and taking in fluids. He said for those who don't know what GU is look at a marathoner. So with that in mind, what other sports or activities have you have heard of the athletes using GU? (Lets go ahead and say Tri events = running.
ATTQOTD: I have never heard of GU being used or discussed outside of running. After hearing that on the radio, I thought it made sense and wondered how many other sports use GU...
Off Topic Rant: First off, congrats to Wisconsin on the W. They knew exactly what to do to stop us and should have won by a much larger margin.
We could have FIRED LES MILES last year!!!!! But NOOOOOOOOOO, politics got in the way. So, the man says he will change the way the offense plays and fools Tiger nation again. Special teams and the offense is a dumpster fire. #7 should have packed his bags and gone to the NFL instead of stick around for this. Our offense is compared to everyone else is like this, everyone else has the latest and greatest iPhone and LSU is still using the Zach Morris cell phone
I saw the FSU QB consuming a GU packet (or similar) once during the game, so it was really happening. I have never heard of the gels being used in sports other than endurance events before, so this was a first for me. That said, the science is improving so I am not surprised to see things like this being tried out in sports like this. I wouldn't be surprised to see this tried in soccer as well at some point.QOTD: Last night as I was driving home from my run I tuned into the radio broadcast of the FSU Ole Miss game and the announcers are talking about players cramping up. @Disney at Heart I am sorry to hear of your loss. Prayers for you and your family.

It's going to be a looooooonnnnnggggggg season for the Tigers.
Not there this weekend (though I almost always am this particular weekend). Watched the game with Clemson there in January - great game atmosphere. Enjoy!Oh, speaking of college football (and Roll Tide)... if anyone is in Disney World this Saturday, I'll be the guy in the really loud houndstooth pants. We'll probably be at ESPN Zone for the game.
I never heard of GU being used outside of endurance races like cycling, running, or a combination of the two. I can see the benefits as a source of fuel though.QOTD: Last night as I was driving home from my run I tuned into the radio broadcast of the FSU Ole Miss game and the announcers are talking about players cramping up.
