The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: No energy drink for me. Until earlier this year, I regularly consumed 75+ oz of coffee a day. I'm down to 30 oz of coffee, but I've just switched to 45+ oz of green and black teas.

I never name my runs. :) Back when I started importing from my Garmin, it used to name them "MM/DD/YYYY City, State" for me automatically. Then Strava started just naming them "Morning Run" "Lunch Run" "Afternoon Run", so I just rename them like it used to with the date and location.

ATTQOTD: No, I have never had an energy drink. I am a coffee fiend though. :)

ATTQOTD: no traditional energy drinks for me. I do have a Diet Coke problem though. I usually drink the equivalent of two cans a day- without fail. Since I don't drink coffee this is my main caffeine source and I get serious headaches when it's time for my daily dose :)

Oh I also have a major sweet tooth problem! Every week I say this will be the week to break the hold sugar has on me, but I'm obviously not that committed bc I haven't stopped yet ;)

QOTD: Do you drink energy drink (Not tea or coffee)?

ATTQOTD: Let me answer that by saying this... Hi. My name is LSUlakes and I drink a LOT of red bull.
I know the stuff is bad for me, really bad. At the moment I am drink at least 2-3 of them a day. I point this out as a area that a minor change could help me drop a few pounds as well as living a healthier life style. I keep telling myself, ok this is the last day, but I keep coming back to it. Well I think its finally time to drop that one and actually make the change. Since I said it here, now it's real.

I'm with you, pal. I currently drink at least two 12-ounce sugar-free Red Bulls a day ... or sometimes three-to-four 8.6-ounce sugar-free ones, depending on the situation.

I. LOVE. RED BULL.

I don't feel a difference in the caffeine spike from, say, coffee or strong iced tea. But I just really like the saccharine flavor. And, like a true addict, I can smell an open can anywhere ... I probably act just like my dogs when they smell bacon cooking.

That said - I have cut it out cold-turkey for months at a time - mostly because it's basically as expensive as smoking, and I can drink coffee or iced tea and get the relatively the same result, yet less enjoyment.

But there is just something so satisfying about stumbling down the stairs all bleary-eyed and sleepy in the morning, reaching into the fridge for an ice-cold can of SFRB and popping the top that just helps start the day right. It's like sunshine in a can and I know that I have a smile on my face when I take that first sip.

Also, I'm pretty sure my insides are pickled because of my Red Bull habit.

ATTQOTD: No - except when I drink red bull with cherry vodka. The caffeine and sugar balance out the sleepiness brought on by the alcohol in the vodka. It is a very sweet drink, but even a morning person like me can drink for hours with this combo.

My cocktail of choice in New Orleans. So delicious.

No. I used to have a red bull or two right before I'd go on stage for my natural bodybuilding contests (YEARS ago) and man those these were like electricity running through my veins! Plus it made my heart fell like it was about to jump out of my chest!

My main fluid staples are (lots of) water, coffee, Gatorade (on race or long run days) and an occasional diet coke.

What's the title or can you post a link? I like to watch these. Thanks!

Be gentle of your review. It was my first time using my GoPro and editing as well. I hope my next one will be much better.

QOTD: I have never had an energy drink. I can't have caffeine, it gives me terrible headaches. But, I drink 95% water. Once and a while I will have a small glass of OJ or a root beer. But I don't like giving up calories to my fluids.

We used to have RC Cola here in Canada too...the 'RC' stood for Royal Crown, wonder if it is the same stuff?

It is Royal Crown!! RC Cola and a moonpie: snack of champions.

@dmross That tank top you linked to is so cute! I am very tempted to get one today. I have an itchy shopping finger.

STP is one site I stay on top of for running wear and SOCKS! When they say clearance, they mean it.

I drink Red Bulls when driving long distances. For instance, a drive to WDW rates 2 LARGE ones: One at the Georgia line, and one at the end of I-95 at Jacksonville. They are a treat! I think they taste like liquid sweet tarts :)

Oh that video! It makes me want to do another Disney race right now. Such memories!!!

QOTD: What is your preference for type of running shirt on your daily runs? How about for races?

ATTQOTD: My normal running shirt has sleeves and depending on the weather will determine race day attire. I normally go with a singlet for most races though.

It depends on the weather. In winter, I wear a short sleeved tech shirt. If it is 65 or so and up, I wear a tank. I get really hot, so I don't ever wear a long sleeved tech shirt. I'd roast.

I also prefer a V or scoop neck. I have a nice V as part of my farmer tan. :D I am self conscious about my arms showing, but I think I will be cooler in a tank in the summer once I get over it, just like I am now on the bottom half once I got over being self conscious about my legs and started wearing SparkleSkirts instead of capris. Of course I apparently wear the capris often enough still on other days for walking or whatever that I have a faint tan line across my shin. So, from mid-shin upwards and elbow upwards, I am pasty pasty white.

You just have to get over that. I get it. I've got more than my fair share of body image issues, but I have to be comfortable, especially if it's hot.

ATTQOTD: Always tech material. I am currently wearing tanks mainly. When the temps drop, I wear short sleeves. In the winter I wear long sleeves. Most of my longer races have been in the cold, so I've worn the long sleeves. I tend to stay cold (I keep a heated throw in my office year round), so I don't really ever overheat in the long sleeves in the winter.

On a side note, I passed a guy running in pleated khaki shorts and a regular cotton tshirt yesterday. It was 5 pm, and around 90 outside. He looked like he was a seasoned runner, so I was baffled.

I have been in races with people running in jeans. JEANS. I don't even wear jeans on a normal day. lol

I've discovered that the less clothes I wear during the run, the better I feel. No don't take that the wrong way, but my preferred attire is sparkle skirts and tanks/singlets. Even when it's a little colder I've discovered I'd rather be cold at the start because I know I will warm up and not be happy. LOL

So I thought my leg/hip flexor whatever that was bothering me was better, but I had some trouble again last night. I might have to go see the doctor, but I might see what happens with some other changes I want to make in my day-to-day footwear first. I noticed the pain during the day, so now I'm wondering if it's my flats (payless specials/no support). I'll spend $100s on my running gear, but work gear, forget it!! LOL

It's probably your flats. Look at it this way...if you're a runner, your feet are EXTREMELY important. This means, you have to take care of them not just when you're running. You have to take care of them all the time. I never go anywhere or do anything in cheap shoes. It's just not worth it.

Does anyone keep a running journal?

What does it look like, what do you document? As I get more into running, I thought it might be nice to have something to look back on!

Also, does anyone have an alternative to the map my run app? I loved being able to find "courses" around my house....but now they want to charge me for that :(

I have just started using the Runners World journal. I'm not sure if I like it yet. Too soon to tell!

Nope. Diet Coke is my main source of caffeine (we don't even have to go there again). That being said, I don't really drink it before I run. I bought some Nuun Energy to try, but I haven't tested it on a run day yet.

This week we have the following folks with races:

22 - LSUlakes - Summer Series Hump Day Run 2 Miler #2 (14:00 / N/A)

25 - @roxymama - Soldier Field 5k (NG / N/A)
26 - @CheapRunnerMike - Rose City Long Course Triathlon (3:20:00 / N/A)
26 - @Waiting2goback - B.A.A 10K - (NG / N/A)
26 - @flvy - B.A.A 10k – (NG / N/A)
26 - @SueInBoston - B.A.A 10K (NG / N/A)
26 - @Mimsy Borogove - Her Madison Half Marathon (NG / N/A)

Let me know if you would like to adjust your goal for your upcoming races this week. Best of luck to you all!

Tonight I am running the second race of the summer series 2 miler. I did not run the first one this year. Todays course is a double loop and very narrow course in a park in town. I did not run any of these races last year and my PR for these events is 13:46. Not sure if I will hit that mark or not today, but I am feeling good at the moment, just not sure about the speed.

Getting excited to get off the streets this weekend as this will be my first trail race this season. I am going to stick with a no goal plan. Just looking to acclimate to racing in the hills and trails again and simply try to run a smart, smooth and strong run. So not take off like a banshee, try to take in the views, work the hills and try very hard to not take any headers...

I keep a running journal on my iPad, noting date, distance, location, type of run and my general feelings, etc. I do enjoy reviewing old entries. And it is also very eye opening to see patterns in my running and the outcomes of races. Very helpful in setting training plans.

No red bull for me, nothing against it. I am just too cheap to pay for red bull. I do drink coffee each day and as I have shared have issues with Diet Coke. The only other thing I drink are Poweraide Zero's after hot runs; which they all seem to be recently. I live in Michigan, 90 degrees has become the new normal? During yesterday's run I thought I would melt.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend! Stay cool and race great!

I bought some Nuun Energy to try, but I haven't tested it on a run day yet.
I use the cherry limeade one just because I like the flavor, and I thought maybe the caffeine would help in the mornings to stave off my caffeine headache (since most long run and race mornings I end up being up for a really long time before I get my coffee). I don't notice any kind of kick from it whatsoever... it must not have very much. :) For races, I started stopping to buy a small coffee on the way to the race.

I actually don't like the taste. That's one reason I haven't given it too much thought!

ATTQOTD: Like @BuckeyeBama I was going to say Red Bull and Vodka; used to drink them all the time clubbing back in the day. I know people who experimented with energy drinks cramming for exams, but I never tried it. I'm more of a coffee girl myself. If I need an extra pick me up, I'll get a dirty chai (chai latte with shot of expresso).
