The Running Thread - 2016

I am looking forward to it! Every time I look the weather is different! But I am very happy to see that it is supposed to be cooler than the first time I checked. They had it at 90 then! Accuweather only has .08 inches of rain for the whole day so hopefully that is accurate. We will probably leave here about 10:00 Saturday morning. It's only about a 3 1/2 hour drive from here. But the vehicle we are taking does NOT have air conditioning so that will be fun! It gets the best gas mileage though so it wins out. I can't tell you how happy I was to realize that my hotel has 12:00 check out so with a 6:00 start time, I should be able to go back and shower before we head home on Sunday! I was thinking how awful it was going to be to be hot and sweaty and then driving home without showering in a truck with no air conditioning! Thanks for the heads up about the expo. I will warn DH to dress accordingly! I just looked and there are 1398 people registered! So hopefully I won't be last! The heat slows me down so much! What time are you planning on getting there? Would be nice to say hello and put a face to the screen name! :)

Looks like we are going to leave for 9:00AM Saturday and going to the expo first, which should be sometime around 3:00PM. We are staying at the Hampton which isn't a bad drive to the start. Looks like we are going to miss the cool morning by a day. I hope the RH% is low with a north wind, and then that 67 wont be to bad. Hope to run into you as well either at the expo or the race. On race day I will have a blue colored shirt with a anchor on it with the words Varsity Sports. 2 other folks making the trip this year, out of those I will be the tallest @ 6'-5". Did some research and looks like the 30-35 AG is going to be a little competitive this year. Not looking good for a AG award.

May total is 60.7 miles. This is a bit low for me, but I took an entire week off after playing 3 games of softball in a tournament. It was the sprinting around the bases that killed me I think. I'm mean absolutely wrecked me, like marathon soreness! Maybe this means I need to do more speed work?

ATTQOTD: I ran 3 miles this morning and then ordered new shoes to throw in the rotation. Happy Running Day!

@LSUlakes I have a June race to add:

June 11 - michigandergirl - Brian Diemer 5K - sub 28:00

Thank you!

@Kathymford Speed work can definitely zap me. The key for me is making sure to balance the hard stuff with easy stuff. For every minute I spend doing hard running (anything faster than marathon pace), I spend 4 minutes doing easier running (marathon pace + 40 seconds or slower) on a weekly basis. This helps maintain balance in the plan. My judge for whether any individual workout was too tough was determining after the workout whether or not I could have done one more interval. If I'm doing 4 x 1.5 mile repeats, then when I'm finished I should feel like I could have done a 5th repeat. If I feel completely spent, then I likely trained too hard. If you feel like the speed workout is infringing on the rest of the week's workouts you could consider:

1) Less intervals of speed (instead of 10 x 400, you could do 8 x 400).
2) Increase rest intervals distance or length of time (normal recover with 400m slow running between fast running (maybe extend it to 600 or 800m) or if by time instead of 2:00 try 3:00).
3) Increase the warm-up length to ensure your body is prepared for the speed intervals (you need at least 6 min of easy running minimum before starting sprints).
4) Slow down the speed interval's pace (it's possible you're running your speed too fast and making the workout too tough). The speed of a speed interval depends on the distance you're training for. Halfs/Fulls speed work is likely at 5K pace. 5K/10Ks would have speed at 1 mile or 3K pace (but significantly shorter distance/duration at those paces then compared to 5K paced intervals).

Thanks for these. These are good tips, as usual from this thread, and I will take them into consideration. The app I'm using for speed work measures cadence (with an activity tracker around your ankle), so my paces are often all over the place. But I'm thinking the warm-up is what might help me. I always think that the warm-up will zapp me, but now that I'm a little faster, I do have a slower pace i can go to. Haha. Also, I feel pretty good after last night's sprints, so maybe I was feeling sluggish in the previous weeks just because it was new; and then coming down with a cold probably added to that! Thanks again!

@NJlauren Welcome to the thread. Be ready to learn lots of cool things! It's one of my favorite reads everyday!

I second this. My favorite morning work ... err... coffee break activity. :)

Dont' feel bad, I'm the same way with my 235. During my last race, I hit the lap button by mistake and totally had a panic attack because I didn't know what it was doing. But now I know what the lap button does, so I guess we will learn it as we go along.

Oooh, I'm new to my 235. Which is the lap button again? I meant to look that up last night. Ha.

ATTQOTD: short run on the training plan today.

I know there are a couple Apple Watch runners on the thread - noticed a new app out supposedly designed for the Apple Watch. Costs 2.99 so might want to let some reviews come in first though.

Which app is this?

I love the idea of doing km splits on the watch/app. And there is zero risk of me doing math while running. I avoid it all costs even when not running. :)

ATTQOTD (6/1): Wedsnesday's are off days for me too, but I like the idea of buying something running related. Or "running" to my glass of wine after work. LOL Like I need help with either of those things. :)

Hampton was sold out for us so we are at Holiday Inn Express, which I prefer anyway as I earn nights with them. We will probably be at the expo around 1-2:00 pm so will most likely miss you there. On race day I plan on wearing a light blue sparkle skirt with anchors and life preservers on it with a red tank top that says "Stay Strong and Be a Hero". Good luck in your AG! I also researched, just to make sure I wouldn't be last, lol, and hope to finish in the middle of my AG. :)

Finally caught up! We adopted a new kitten last week and so we've been busy acclimating her to our crazy household. Funnily enough, she took to our 100-pound labrador first thing. Cats, man.

QOTD: Since today is National Running day, how far do you plan to run today? Doing anything else to celebrate?

Our local running store has an event tonight, but it starts too late, so I'm going to try and fit in at least 2 miles over and back on the bridge after work. Heat + humidity + hills = crazy? Wednesday is normally my rest day, so I figure something is better than nothing.

On the 220, it's the bottom right button. I hit it sometimes when I **** my wrist to check the watch. :o Not so much recently, but I have been making an effort to not **** my wrist back and instead just hold it up with a neutral wrist.

Edit: Ok apparently I used a bad word there to try and convey that I am tilting my wrist backwards.

oooooh... It took me a while but I think I figured it out. Interesting choice of words, if I'm right.

Took me a while too, but I think I finally figured it out.
