The Running Thread - 2016

I am doing not doing anything special for today.

Everyone around me has been getting the flu bug. I have trying to avoid everyone but 2 days ago started feeling like it was coming. Sucking down cold/flu meds to help keep it from setting in bad. Feeling decent so far. Now planning on really enjoying and not over extending myself.

QOTD: How are you celebrating St. Patricks day?

Nothing too special here. Got in an interval run, had a couple of phone interview between working, and then having Asian spiced pork for dinner. It's a very non-Irish day for a guy that is close to 25% Irish.

I went back to look at what they said and it didn't say blood clots it was blood pooling. When I was researching compression sleeves I did not come across anything that said that either, I thought maybe it was just me being a rookie so I thought I would ask here. Here is what the newsletter said "Sleeves are great to wear during a run! We do not recommend that you recover (keep on for extended amount of time after run) in sleeves. While wearing sleeves during periods of inactivity, blood can pool around the ankle and foot. This is especially true on a long flight, so don't wear sleeves on an airplane!"

This could make sense because it is tight around the ankle and could make it hard to keep the circulation moving, which is important for recovery. I would never wear the sleeves for recovery, the socks do work for that though.

I have been away on business and then dealing with a significant family illiness so I have fallen pretty far behind. I feel the need to catch up on the QOTD's, so sorry in advance for the bookI am about to create!

Saw the comments from the administrator, so I guess I missed some drama. Hope those involved a ok and we have moved on...

I use smart wools in the winter as running in Michigan in February is VERY cold, and they work great. The rest of the year I simply run in generic athletic socks from Dick's. I am beginning to think about my Ultra in the fall and what might be best for my feet. I have never had a problem but I have also never run 50 miles? Thoughts/suggestions?

Sorry to hear about the family illness. I hope everything works out for you all.

You didn't miss much. If you want to know what happened you can PM me. I can't talk about it on here anymore. But everything with all of the contributors on here is fine. It involved an imposter/fraud.

I think finding socks for a 50 mile run will be tough because it's not like you can do multiple training runs to see which socks work best. So many things can change for you jumping to that distance. It's kind of like going from a 1/2 to a full marathon. Things that work in a 1/2 marathon don't always translate to a full.

QOTD: How are you celebrating St. Patricks day?

ATTQOTD: Hopefully with a run this afternoon and of course followed with beer. If things work out this weekend, I plan to have a little crawfish boil and a few folks over.

Update with the home buying process. Inspections went well and only minor issues which will be resolved prior to moving day. So we only have a few weeks left at the old house and I will miss our outside area. I will have to maximize my outdoor cooking time in the coming weeks.

I had the same issue, but haven't since I switched shoes. I don't think it was really the shoes... maybe my stride changed and that just so happened around the same time as the new shoes. Either way, I am glad I don't do it anymore.

Sorry to hear of the family illness. Sending prayers your way.

Wishing you luck that the house closes with no surprises!

QOTD- I ran while the kids were in school. Once school was over it was business as usual.

Quite a few racers this weekend. Good Luck everyone!

@LSUlakes feeling confident about the 21:30 given the surprise performance at your half recently?

I think there is a chance I can get there, but not a high one. I just felt like I sandbagged the last adjusted time and it looked like I did so just to get below my "goal". Every now and then, we need to fail... so we can get back up.

Speaking of the race this weekend, its supposed to be raining, humid and in the mid 60's. The one nice thing is this is the first time I did not have to go pick up my bib. Work is paying for the race and someone went pick them all up today, so I just walked down to the lobby and got it. I wish that happened more often.

How are you preparing to run in the snow? I've never ran a race in snow and now in a total panic. Anybody have advice? TIA !!
It is not supposed to start accumulating until late in the day, so it should not be a factor.

Yeah looks like it might not start until after we are done. Hoping so anyways. I've never run in snow really so wouldn't know what to do except slow down.

I hope the forecast is right. I ran a 10k last year in the rain and it was miserable, I don't know if i can do 13 in slippery snow, just the fear of falling and hurting would be enough for me to forfeit.

Question to all the runners on here! When you first started out, how frequently did you run?

I literally JUST started my new running program (go me!) this week. I ran on Wed and was planning on going out again today, but my legs are still SO SORE. Does that mean I ran too much? Unfortunately, with my schedule I only have certain days I have any time for a run. Should I wait until my next free day (Sunday?) or try to tough it out today?

Thanks everyone, I'm a super newbie!

Legs being sore does not mean that they are injured, or that you can't run on them. Two rules for new runners - don't run on back to back days, and keep the pace slow enough that you can talk while running. Stay positive - before you know it the leg pain will be a thing of the past and you will look forward to each run.

I started out running about the same number of times I do now. I run three days a week, sometimes 4. You are going to be sore some as you start out and unless you are feeling pain as opposed to soreness, I'd probably still go out for a run today. Often you find the soreness is actually aided by going back out. But, you may want to take it easier today - cut back on your intended mileage or going more slowly or insert more walk breaks. It's important not to over train and risk injury early on, but establishing a routine and habit is also important.

Exciting day here, just checked the Boston website and my bib is posted...I'll be starting in Wave 1 Corral 4, up with a bunch of people that will bay WAY faster than me!

That's so exciting!

When I first started running it was 3 days a week (Tuesday, Thursday, and Weekend). What kind of plan are you following? My best suggestion without any other information is that it's ok to be a little sore from one day to the next, but I would suggest being conservatively slow today. Whatever pace you think is slow, do like 30-60 seconds slower than that. Your body will adjust to the new level of activity after a few weeks.

Congrats!!
I'm actually kind of bummed that I'm going to be at SW Darkside and will miss cheering the runners. The route is one block from my house and I go out there cheering runners every year. This year my best friend is running and I'm going to miss cheering him too.

I started out with 3 days a week and I'm still running 3-4 days per week. I agree that the biggest thing is to go slow. I think most people probably start out going too fast until they figure out the pacing. And if it's generalized muscle soreness, it's usually ok to go out for a run again or even a walk if running feels like too much. Active recovery usually helps with muscle soreness more than inactivity. But if it's pain in a specific area, then I would consider resting until it's better. It also helped me to join a local running group when I started. The companionship and the people to talk to about questions like this was really helpful. There are a lot of beginner running groups around here so maybe look for something like that? Good luck!

And good luck to everyone racing this weekend :)
